Introduction: I am an English instructor with 10 years of experience teaching a diverse range of students at various 2- and 4-year colleges. I specialize in academic reading & writing, ESL instruction, pre-college English, American Literature, and culturally responsive teaching across disciplines.
As a published academic writer, I have vast editing and technical writing experience. My services also include workshops for writing cover letters, personal statements, and grant proposals.
I currently teach pre-college English and Eng 101 &102 part time at Shoreline and North Seattle Community Colleges. I also teach ESL at Seattle University's English Language Learning Center.
I hope that my tutoring sessions will help students not only to perform well in school, but also to achieve success beyond the classroom. My lessons incorporate hands-on, multi-modal writing and grammar activities that are tailored to the individual student. I believe in student-driven learning, which keeps students motivated and engaged.
I love teaching English because it allows me to learn new things alongside my students. One of the most exciting aspects of writing is that it gives us a voice; every person has a unique story to tell and it is exciting to witness that story unfold as they develop their writing skills. Learning academic English is not an easy task. I have the privilege of supporting students on this journey. They inspire me!

I had Prof. Crawford for Spring '16 Quarter at NSC. Her method of teaching is rare but highly effective as she used the subject (ENG101) to get us involved in activities that will surely resonate with us for years to come! She is a great reminder that there is much more to learn apart from the core curriculum we all have been exposed to. She is fun, patient and always encourages to fulfill our potential, even if we don't see it ourselves!

Professor Crawford, is a very professional and very talented professor. She exactly knows what students need to learn. As her student in English 101, my English improved a lot especially my academic and critical writing. I honesty recommend anyone who wants to learn real English to study with Professor Crawford.

Hello,
I have taken English&101 in the spring Quarter 2016 and i was glad that Dr Chiyo Crawford was my professor. She is an excellent teacher with amazing teaching skills.She organised the class very well, and it was a very interactive class.
Being a non native English speaker, i was having a hard time in my writing skills.After taking this class, my writing skills improved significantly and i would see good results in my writing skills. The reading material she ask us to reads were very informative.Therefore, my knowledge about literature improved too.
I highly recommend Dr Crawford because i had an great experience with her.
