- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Typically, we start with an assessment for the particular subject matter desired. Then, the assessment is explained and reviewed with the parent(s), where we discuss strengths and weaknesses of the student. Next, a program specific to that individual's needs is suggested and explained. Options are offered that will best aid the student in reaching their goals. Parent(s) then have time to decide what route they would like to go, considering scheduling and finances without pressure. If they decide to continue, then the student is placed on the schedule and tutoring begins as soon as desired. Once tutoring begins, there is on going communication regarding the student and content being studied. Progress reports are done periodically and shared with the parent(s).
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
While working with adults who had disabilities, as well as children with autism, I decided to take on a private client on the side. I started with one 6th grade student who was not even at a first grade reading level, though she had tried various programs for years to try to catch up. I was able to get her up to grade level using systematic explicit reading instruction. Her confidence and independence grew alongside her newfound love for reading. It was such a rewarding and enjoyable experience! Through word of mouth, I gained several clients and was able to help many more students reach their goals, too. Twelve years later, my business has expanded and I am privileged to work with some amazing students and be apart of their journey to success! My two sisters (one a successful teacher of 8 years) have joined with me as well.
