Fredrick is very nice, honest, hard working and does the job for a fair price. He is also very knowledgeable. We have had him chalk our windows, doors and other trims- he said the chalks we gotten were from a bad batch and went to store to return and replace them for other brand. The extra mile he went to get a job done is highly recommended for any handyman type work!

JTNA Home Services provides great contracting work done with a smile and good customer service. Our project was big, consisting of : extensive interior painting, tile work, base board install, stair install, 2 vanity installs and a lot of little projects. Total time spent on the project was 2 weeks. You can tell by the work done that that Jason has skill and knowledge and puts those attributes into practice well. I look forward to counting on JTNA in the future when we are ready for our next home improvement project.

Skip did a series of tiny-to-small projects around the house. He replaced our front porch stairs, hung a porch swing, raised a threshold, installed a couple ceilings, lowered a peninsula cabinet, replaced an exterior door, installed a glass shower enclosure, etc. He did everything fabulously. He took on the subcontracting of some other work, too, and acted as the general contractor. His standard of quality was the same as ours. We are thrilled with everything he did. He was prompt and industrious in getting the work done. We would definitely use him again and have recommended him to others for similar work.

Chad was prompt, tidy and professional. We are very happy with the work he did in our home. Replacing a fiberglass tub and shower surround that had cracked up due to improper installation by our home builder/contractor took 2 days. The demo went smoothly and the new unit fit in great. The sheetrock and texture repair job looks fine. We were glad to have Chad's help!

I hired Troy to replace the caulking in the bathtub, replace the entry-door frame, buff out scratches from dogs around the entry way (inside and outside), repair the molding around the window in the entry way, replace a garage door opener, and fix the faucet and drain in the bathtub. He was very thorough to complete these projects with a guarantee that when the weather permits, he will finish the touch-up painting on the outside. Troy seems very knowledgeable and willing to meet budgeting needs for his customers.

I hired Mike last summer (2010) to tear out and install a bunch of interior doors and one exterior door. Fast, efficient and he was there when he said he would be! I appreciated him telling me not to bother with just the interior door..get the jam and all. He was right! His work was professional and I am going to hire him again in 2011 to do a bunch more window installs!

Richard is absolutely amazing! He is honest, dependable and gets the job done. We have hired Richard to put in a paver patio in our backyard, but after spending time talking with him it has turned out he is able to help out with some on-going projects in our home! He has fixed a leaky pipe in our laundry room plus has put in a pipe drain where our egress window was installed and managed to do it the way it was suppose to be done in the first place! Finally we found someone who gets the job done right. At this point we are very happy with that we got matched up with Richard and continue to look forward to him doing what needs to be done. We thank you! I would recommend Richard to anyone who is looking for an all around general contractor. He let us know right off what he can and will not do! He talks you through what he will be doing without even having to ask! He is what a contractor should be like! Again Thank you with many more "THANK YOU'S to come Yolonda Adams & Deirdre Adams

I would recommend Steve and the Rocker company for all of your construction needs. Our new home is in a really nice neighborhood here in Anchorage, but the interior hadn't been updated much since the 70s. Steve helped me make design choices that rocketed our home into this millennia, century, decade, and year, but also without doing anything that will feel super dated in a few years. He went out of his way to help us stay within budget but get top quality materials where it mattered. We used them for a kitchen gut and remodel, creation of an additional laundry space, laying flooring, removal of a baseboard heater, new wall and the installation of a window and door. So our job tested their skills in pretty much every trade: electrical, plumbing, demo, new construction, insulation, windows/doors, drywall, texture, painting, flooring, lighting, etc. The only thing they didn't do was install our stone countertops. Steve and his crew were efficient, clean, polite, and SO SO good. If you're nervous about hiring someone off the internet, (I was!) you don't have to worry about it if you go with The Rocker Company. They are honest, skilled, hard workers. They don't cut ANY corners, but they do maximize efficiency so you aren't paying for "dead" time. They are clean and courteous, and I never felt at all uncomfortable with them in my home, whether I was there or not. Good help is hard to find in Anchorage. You can't go wrong if you hire Steve and the Rocker Company.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

    • Trim repair:
      • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
      • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
    • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
    • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
      • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
      • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
        • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
