Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

How long does it take to clean a house professionally?

Generally, getting your house cleaned professionally can take several hours. The time it takes for house cleaners to complete their job depends on the size of your home, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have, the type of service you require and the condition of your house. It also might depend on how many employees are cleaning and the supplies they are using. If you get recurring cleaning services, the first visit might take a bit longer than the subsequent visits.

When choosing the best house cleaner for you, ask for an estimate about how long their services will take.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

They did a great job cleaning my house! We moved cross country and hired Lucy's to clean the house after we left, in preparation for the new homeowners. She was very easy to work with even though she had to go through the hassle of using a realtor lockbox to get in and we had to mail a check to her. She was very responsive when we were coordinating the cleaning and I found her prices to be very reasonable. Highly recommend her!

I needed someone pretty fast and Natasha responded right away! My house needed a deep clean.. dusting ceiling fans and blinds, a good wipe down, and thorough mop on the hardwood floors were the main things. She went above and beyond, leaving the house smelling so clean using essential oils. Everything looked neat and tidy. Job well done!

I have a 2 year old and a 3 month old and I just needed a break from cleaning the house. I was able to book Lucy within 3 days and they did amazing! They cleaned things I haven’t touched in years. Whatever they moved, they put back. They organized piles of stuff that I wouldn’t have thought to, and made my house feel much larger with the open space. I highly recommend!

Lucy’s housekeeping was the perfect choice to do the move out cleaning for my in-law’s home. I had many questions prior to scheduling the cleaning and they were very responsive and answered all of my questions. The team arrived on time and they did a great job getting the house ready to be put on the market. I highly recommend Lucy’s housekeeping for your cleaning needs.

We have 4b3.5b, they didn’t clean our gust bathroom at all. They can only do very very basic clean. Not that professional as I expected. The worst thing is, our cleaning supplies disappeared after they left. Of course they said they didn’t take our supplies. But We didn’t hire any other house cleaning after them. Although it doesn’t worth much, but that makes me unhappy and I won’t hire them again. Not recommended!

Clean the house. She sent me a lis of things she does. Livingroom furniture not moved and swept under. Kitchen countertops not cleaned. Grease smeared across stove and microwave. Dirt left in piles. Items moved around. Saly and pepper shakers in cabinet. I had them by stove. Granddaughters room moved around. My bathroom items moved into a pile. She offered to come back and complete. Do it right the fist time. Looks like they were rushed when they got to kitchen. Not sure if you can see the dirt in pics. But I can

The main thing I hired them for was to clean my hardwood and tile floors because I am not able to do it. I told Charman that I wanted her to use the steam mop on all of my floors, including the wood ones because my socks were getting dirty form walking on them. She was quiet but polite and came with her 20 year old son who kept asking if they were ready to leave and tracking grass from outside back in the house. After she left I put on clean socks and they quickly became as dirty as they had before she cleaned. I called her and asked her if she had used the steam mop as I had requested. She said, no because she was afraid to. I reminded her that I had requested she use it and she said that she had forgotten. I told her that I wasn't happy because I paid her $60.00 for less than two hours and the main thing I wanted her to clean (the floors) was not done. She reluctantly came back out the next day with the steam mop and only one pad for the entire 1,500 sq ft house. After one quick go over (about 10 minutes) the mop head was black. She was in a hurry and said that if they still weren't clean she would come back the next day. They were a little better but she needed to bring at least one more clean mop head to get the floors completely clean. She never came back or answered her phone, so I ended up paying full price for a half done job. It's too bad really because she seemed like a nice person and I would have gladly hired her to come every two weeks if she had just done the one thing I requested. (*The socks in the photo are ones I wore immediately after the redo! The ones I wore after the first time she did the floors were completely black and have already been washed. Of course I didn't think I would need a photo of them for a review.) UPDATE IN RESPONSE TO REPLY: This person did not mop my floors 12 times (who does that). Her son said that he had rather work outside so I asked if he would cut literally 5 small twigs off a hedge for me. It took him all of 2 minutes. They did sweep (not clean my garage) but it was discussed in advance. I don't know what she means about taking me appointments.

Update: The owner reached out to me after reading my review and was very eager to make things right. She gave me a partial refund and has offered to give another cleaning at a discount and promised to be there in person to ensure the job gets done properly. I am impressed with her conscientiousness and most likely will hire Maid Nation LLC in the future. Original review: The crew was friendly but I specifically asked to have walls wiped down and carpet vacuumed because previous owners had cats and I'm allergic. They we're in my house for 6 hours but it did not appear as though they had vacuumed or wiped down the walls.
