Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

What is the difference between a housekeeper and a house cleaner?

Although some house cleaning and housekeeping duties might overlap, a house cleaner is charged with the top-to-bottom cleaning of a home. House cleaner duties typically include basic and deep house cleaning, such as washing and sanitizing countertops, floors, tubs, toilets, kitchens and more.

Housekeepers or maids are hired to lightly clean and maintain certain aspects of the home. This might include dusting, washing dishes, changing sheets, doing some meal preparation and restocking the client’s groceries and personal care products.

It’s also worth noting that a housekeeper or maid is usually one individual employed to a home (sometimes hired as a live-in), while a house cleaner is oftentimes accompanied by a team of cleaners.

What should I ask a house cleaner or maid before hiring them?

There are many questions to ask a cleaning service before you hire them to make sure they’re the right fit. These questions might include:

  • How much do you charge?
  • How do you set your prices -- per hour or per square foot? Or, do you charge a flat rate?
  • What is your past work experience? Can I see a list of references?
  • Are you accustomed to working with different home or apartment types and sizes?
  • Can you work with children or pets in the house?
  • What types of cleaning products do you use?
  • Do you bring your own cleaning supplies and products?
  • How often can you clean my home?
  • Is there anything you recommend I do (or don't do) to my home before you arrive?

How often should you have your house cleaned?

The frequency you should have your house cleaned depends on several factors, and the best professional house cleaner can give you a rough estimate of costs so you can budget how often you need someone to clean your home.

Daily house cleaning may be necessary if you have a home with a large number of bedrooms with young children and kids, although other homeowners may benefit from weekly house cleaning. A weekly cleaner can clean the bathroom, kitchen, do laundry, vacuum and mop. An occasional deep house cleaning is most beneficial for people who have recently renovated a home or are looking to do a spring clean.

The cleaner the sent, Rani, did a very thorough job cleaning the house we just bought. The previous owners did not clean at all before leaving. Rani came in and did a very thorough job cleaning the kitchen, bathrooms, tile floors, hardwood floors, inside the cabinets, inside the oven, refrigerator and microwave. I would recommend Caudle Property Maintenance and I would recommend Rani, the person who actually cleaned the house.

We had our house cleaned by K & J and they were awesome to work with. They did a great job of listening to what we wanted cleaned and did their thing. We will definitely be reaching back out.

They did a great job cleaning my house! We moved cross country and hired Lucy's to clean the house after we left, in preparation for the new homeowners. She was very easy to work with even though she had to go through the hassle of using a realtor lockbox to get in and we had to mail a check to her. She was very responsive when we were coordinating the cleaning and I found her prices to be very reasonable. Highly recommend her!

I needed someone pretty fast and Natasha responded right away! My house needed a deep clean.. dusting ceiling fans and blinds, a good wipe down, and thorough mop on the hardwood floors were the main things. She went above and beyond, leaving the house smelling so clean using essential oils. Everything looked neat and tidy. Job well done!

I hired Nikki to clean my house bi-weekly. The first time, she deep cleaned, including wiping down cabinet doors and scrubbing baseboards. She took the initiative to deep clean things we had not discussed, but obviously needed to be done. I am very pleased with her work.

We have 4b3.5b, they didn’t clean our gust bathroom at all. They can only do very very basic clean. Not that professional as I expected. The worst thing is, our cleaning supplies disappeared after they left. Of course they said they didn’t take our supplies. But We didn’t hire any other house cleaning after them. Although it doesn’t worth much, but that makes me unhappy and I won’t hire them again. Not recommended!

Nikki worked with me to get a time and a day that was good for our house for her to clean. She had called very quickly when I had requested help. She is very easy to contact. She does a really good job cleaning and when asked to pay special attention to a problem area, did an excellent job of cleaning it up and making it look great again. I would recommend her to family and friends,

Leanne is a very nice person however her work quality was very poor. Initially on the surface it looked clean and she was hired to perform a deep cleaning she was paid $160 to clean a 2 bedroom 2 bath 1000 square foot apartment my apartment was surface cleaned already. Upon inspecting her work unfortunately after she had already left and been paid I noticed that my house was not clean I called Leanne and she indicated the products she used were all surface cleaners and a dry erase we all know when deep cleaning you have to use more than just an all Surface Cleaner the house did not smell clean. The kitchen floor had not been swept very well as you will see in one of the attached pictures and was sticky. The master bath shower and tub enclosure was still dirty. The tub still had a soap scum ring around the tub and the shower enclosure was still dirty with soap scum. The toilet base was still dirty it looked like it had been wiped but that was it. The master bedroom was not dusted completely the bed had not been touched at all. The glass lamp shade on the nightstand had not been touched a picture frame on the table in the living room had not been touched and was covered with dust. The front door on the inside had not been wiped down around the locks dirty fingerprints are still noticeable as well as on the patio interior door. I immediately contacted Leanne and she was supposed to come the next day she called and cancelled I asked to reschedule the next day it she could not make it each time I requested her to come back out she had an excuse as to why she could not come. She accepted a personal check as a form of payment she took the check to my bank and was charged to cash the check and appeared to be upset with me because my bank charged her I informed Italy and all banks will charge you to cash a check if you do not bank with them these are standard banking practices out of my control. If your house is kept up and mostly clean and you need a light house cleaning Leanne would do a good job however I do not recommend her for anything other than lite cleaning . $160 is way too much to charge for light house cleaning. I advise you to take a look at the pictures that I have attached these pictures were taken immediately following my initial conversation with Leanne regarding her services.

Toynua and her team did an awesome job on my 'cluttered' little house!! Very friendly, professional and intuitive to what I wanted done without having to explain. She is my go to cleaner from now on and can't wait to have her come help me organize and clean out my garage :) They did more than I expected!! Great job!!! #HappyClient

Toynua and her crew managed to pull off a small miracle with our dirty house. The once-cluttered office was organized and the whole home was much improved. There were a few cobwebs that got overlooked during the initial cleaning, but given from where they started it was still quite an achievement. I will definitely have them back.

The main thing I hired them for was to clean my hardwood and tile floors because I am not able to do it. I told Charman that I wanted her to use the steam mop on all of my floors, including the wood ones because my socks were getting dirty form walking on them. She was quiet but polite and came with her 20 year old son who kept asking if they were ready to leave and tracking grass from outside back in the house. After she left I put on clean socks and they quickly became as dirty as they had before she cleaned. I called her and asked her if she had used the steam mop as I had requested. She said, no because she was afraid to. I reminded her that I had requested she use it and she said that she had forgotten. I told her that I wasn't happy because I paid her $60.00 for less than two hours and the main thing I wanted her to clean (the floors) was not done. She reluctantly came back out the next day with the steam mop and only one pad for the entire 1,500 sq ft house. After one quick go over (about 10 minutes) the mop head was black. She was in a hurry and said that if they still weren't clean she would come back the next day. They were a little better but she needed to bring at least one more clean mop head to get the floors completely clean. She never came back or answered her phone, so I ended up paying full price for a half done job. It's too bad really because she seemed like a nice person and I would have gladly hired her to come every two weeks if she had just done the one thing I requested. (*The socks in the photo are ones I wore immediately after the redo! The ones I wore after the first time she did the floors were completely black and have already been washed. Of course I didn't think I would need a photo of them for a review.) UPDATE IN RESPONSE TO REPLY: This person did not mop my floors 12 times (who does that). Her son said that he had rather work outside so I asked if he would cut literally 5 small twigs off a hedge for me. It took him all of 2 minutes. They did sweep (not clean my garage) but it was discussed in advance. I don't know what she means about taking me appointments.
