Doug did an excellent job. He was professional with his attention to detail and patient with me as I continued to add tasks to the job. He painted our garage doors/trim and shutters after repairing them and restoring them to good working order. He also recaulked our entire master bathroom, straightened out and tightened all the kitchen cupboards as well as did some drywall repair and hung curtain rods. I would recommend him to anyone in need and most definitely hire in the future. Oh, and he also fixed the striping on the bottom of our door going to/from the garage. He took it off the hinges and did it right by ensuring it was stapled onto the door (wasn't done by our homebuilder).

After I posted my drywall repair job on Thumbtack at 8am, Jim had provided me a quote by 8:15am and then showed up at my house on the same day to do the repair. By 4:30pm the entire drywall repair job was complete and for a very economical cost (lowest of all the bids I received. He is very courteous and professional - highly recommend Jim.

Hired Ron to repair large patio cover ceiling. Sent info out to three vendors and he was first to respond, and then was quick to reply on all e-mails when setting up the job. Surface required a lot of scraping, taping, texturing and painting. He provided a fair quote and a very reasonable time frame to complete on short notice. Ron did an excellent job all the way around! Showed up on time, completed work on time and demonstrated quality craftsmanship. Very personable as well, and we highly recommend him for drywall repair needs. We passed his info on to our son who is a realtor because he is always in need of quality vendors to do work on various properties....

This guy knows what he's doing. Journeyman Services is my go-to for any remodel work I do on my home. Mr. Kern has exceptional attention to detail and has done an outstanding job on various projects around the house including drywall work, gas line installation, electrical line installation. and concrete cutting. Finesse painting did a great job painting the interior of my house, and did so for a reasonable price. They were courteous, professional, and fast. Nick was upfront about the cost for the job, and repaired all of the holes I had in my drywall. There were areas where curtain rods were removed, and Nick took care of them as well. If I need painting done again, I'll be sure to hire Finesse painting.

We needed a dryer vent re-attached and some drywall repaired/textured/painted. I had three other people we have used in the past not return texts/calls so I turned to Thumbtack for help. I found Mr. Right Handyman (Joseph) and he was quick to respond, and find a time that worked for my schedule, his schedule, and our tenant's schedule. He's very professional and punctual, and he did an awesome job at getting this project finished. We will definitely be using him again in the future.

Excellent work by Randy. Arrived the day prior to size up the job and make sure he had everything needed to repair a greenbelt light pole that had come down. Returned the next morning, removed stripped bolts, drilled and installed new anchors and has the pole back up, perfectly straight and ready to withstand a hurricane. Highly recommended.

Morgan was a pleasure to talk with on the phone - she quickly found a specialist in my area for the same day. Alex came within about an hour after I called him. Immediately cleared off the stuff that was damaged by water and set up dehumidifier, fan, and applied treatment. Came back on the third day to wrap everything up. The area was completely dry and ready for drywall repair. It was a pleasure working with Alex. I would definitely hire them again. The price was very reasonable.

Venus Homes recently remodeled two of my bathrooms, added an additional full bath, replaced all my plumbing, added a hallway, and tiled my entire house...in less than a month. Narsay was professional, punctual, and was precise in his project coordination. He was able to get a tile guy, electrician, plumber, and drywall guy all to work in perfect order to get the job done cleanly and quickly. The crew was respectful of my house and honest. I had to give them full access to my house while I was at work and nothing ever went missing or was used without my permission. (They never even touched something as small as the thermostat). The entire job was done quickly and well. The tile guy was amazing. His lines and cuts are as good as I've seen. Narsay was communicative and proactive in identifying the best way to make the changes I wanted. I had 3 bids for this project and Narsay was the most positive and enthusiastic of the three. He was genuinely excited and confident about this project. He followed through and made good on his word. There were no surprises or additional costs. Narsay did what he quoted and was reasonable and fair. Multiple friends have requested Narsay's number now that they have seen his work. I highly recommend Venus Homes for your project. I will add photos when I'm done putting in the right furniture and painting the walls. Rob

Noberto did a fantastic job with the drywall on this project and another we've already hired him for. He is one of the best mudsman (if that's such a thing) I've ever worked with. His attention to smoothing over the skim coat is detailed and meticulous. And he taught me the valuable life lesson of not coming to conclusions or making critical judgements until a job is 100% complete.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
