Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

Vinny came over super fast and figured out the multiple problems I had very quickly. I initially had another electrician quote me over $350, and even then they couldn't identify the problem. Vinny found and fixed the problem in under 20 minutes for less than half the price! I would definitely recommend Vinny to friends/family!

Allen came out and gave me an awesome price for the work we agreed on. I was relocating switches and receptacles at 240v and 120v. Also I was adding 4 spot lights for new laundry room and garage area. Allen was great and on time as he planned. He even came back after the drywall was completed to finish installing the can lights in the laundry room. Really great, affordable, and trustworthy electrician. I will definitely be using Farris Electric in the future. Thanks again Allen.

Earlier this month, one of their electricians came, addressed the problem and a few days later, he was done fixing the electrical outage. Four days ago, six days after he was done with the previous work, we experienced the same electrical problem, we contacted GB and we had an appointment to address this again today. Our appointment was cancelled by them today, at the last minute, leaving us with no electrical power in the same areas that were repaired a few days ago. This is definitely not professional or conducive to a good business relationship and yes, it is extremely disturbing to have to deal with this lack of response after having paid such a large sum of money between Oct 28-Nov 11. GB has failed and disappointed us.

I recently started a new business in which electrical plays a major factor towards it success. After talking with Michael on the phone, he made me feel confident he could help me accomplish my goals. My requirements for my particular business are very demanding in terms of power and what Michael would be asked to do. Through the last month of working with him, Michael has never failed to explain what he is doing, explain pricing, and always looking to improve the project with his own suggestions. Michael has even went so far as to deal with the city for me and help speed up my requests so my business can flourish. I will use no one but Michael from here on out and I am recommending him to anyone that needs an electrician.

I got two jobs done. First I needed help with some rewiring between my kitchen and living room lights and rewiring for my Nest thermostat. That job went great with the communication, response time, and price. I even tipped. I would rate 5 stars but... I called Lou again because my hot water heater kept going in and out. He said it was because one of my elements was bad and that I could repair or just replace. This is for my vacation rental home and wanted to wait a couple of weeks to get some income in before repairing or replacing it. The next night the water was out again so I had Lou just replace the whole thing on a Friday. The next day, Saturday, I get a text at 10 PM that there was no hot water. I paid $85 for an emergency plumber to come out and said that the air wasn't purged out the water heater before installing Thursday, my guest texts me at 6 am saying there was no hot water. So, I called the plumber who came out on Saturday and he said it must be the breaker. Lou's diagnostic was that the elements were bad and I need to repair or replacement when the root issue was the breaker. I'm not an electrician but I feel that's a huge rookie mistake or he tried to get a more expensive job out of me. $700 for the replacement of the water heater. $85 for an emergency plumber $185 I had to refund a guest $65 to replace the breaker. Lou's mistake cost me an additional $335. When I asked him about it he said that he should have known to check and offered to replace it the next day at no cost labor just parts.
