Jonathon helped me with getting my heating and air conditioning in compliance for my home sale. He was prompt, had excellent understanding of the issue, and was able to quickly diagnose a solution. He was proactive and communicated well. The quality of the work was outstanding. I would recommend him to friends and family, and will use him for any future HVAC needs I may have!

We had used another service on another home owned by the same owner before we had found All Steam. All Steam did a better job for a better price. They also did the job with limited Air conditioning (wall unit in one room) as the main unit was broken; it was supposed to be fixed that morning, but the HVAC company didn't call me while they were there. We were on a tight schedule to get the tenants moved in so they saved the day.

Steve did an amazing job with my ac unit. Not only was he exceptionally knowledgeable, he also took the time to walk me through each step he was doing. He also explained to me how each part functioned and what its purpose was for the ac system. I highly recommend AC Pro for your air conditioning needs.

We initially discussed air duct and return cleaning for my mother's home to get it ready to be rented out. Once we saw the work ethic of Casey and Raul though, we discussed air register cleaning, dryer vent cleaning and air coil cleaning. These guys are very thorough and the job took them the better part of a full day. My parents were heavy smokers, so the job required more than average focus. 100% recommend them and will not hesitate to call on them for this type of service in the future.

Chris arrived at the scheduled time and even gave a call ahead of time that he was on his way. He was very friendly and courteous. After describing that I needed the common ground wires connected to both my air handlers he quickly got to work and accomplished the task. He went above and beyond my request by installing the new thermostat with out me asking. He was through to make sure that it was hooked up correctly and that both heating and air conditioning was still working properly. He also offered to come back if anything wasn't working as it should. I would highly recommend Grand Air for HVAC work. Thanks Chris for a job well done.

I've used Ken for my heating and air conditioning needs for some 6 years, and could not be more pleased. He is on time, honest, repairs only what is needed, thoroughly cleans up, and the price is always very fair. I highly recommend Ken for your heating and a/c needs. Wish other service providers were this good.

I knew that my vents were dirty and that they hadn't been cleaned in at least three years when I bought the house. They were much, much worse than I thought. They were filthy and also had mold and bacteria growing in them due to moisture from a plugged up drain coming from the air conditioning drain pan. My vents are now perfectly clean and I know a lot more about my system and things I can do to improve performance and hopefully cut my electric bill as well. I am very happy with the service I received. These guys are very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. We would recommend you to anyone and will use your services again in the future.

While rehabbing a mobile home in Mesa, I discovered the furnace was completely shot. Wonderful. I used Thumbtack to find a furnace pro who could give me an estimate. Josh from Airamedics came out, looked over the situation and gave me some things to consider. His bid wasn't the cheapest, bit it was much less than the others. (The cheapest bidder just threw me a number without even coming out to see the situation!) Josh's crew came out, installed a new heat pump, talked about the 10 yr warranty, took out the broken furnace, and arranged for all the old equipment to be hauled away. I'd recommend Airamedics anytime!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost to replace air ducts in a house?

If your air ducts have been damaged, you’ll need to replace them. The national average air duct replacement cost is $150-$280, which may not include materials. Factors such as duct material, labor, location of ducts and linear feet of ductwork will all affect your final costs. Labor costs will vary based on how accessible the ducts are and what material your ducts are made of. The least expensive duct material is a flexible, non-metallic ducting that costs approximately $1-$2 per linear foot. Flexible aluminum is generally more expensive and stronger than non-metallic ducting. Stainless steel ducting is the strongest, the least flexible (meaning installing it typically has higher labor rates), and usually the most expensive. An average price for air duct replacement could range between $35 and $55 per linear foot, including basic materials and labor. A typical single-family home has 6-10 duct runs; replacing or installing one duct run could average $150-$250 for labor.
