Jon was extremely responsive, reliable, and easy to work with on this repair. He provided us the exact service we requested and could afford at the time and did not try to sell us a new system like has happened with other HVAC contractors in the past. We have already had him back for another HVAC repair on another property and from all indications he will be our go to person for HVAC P.M. and repair going forward.

I have hired many carpet cleaning companies before to do the job , but what All Steam gave was exceptional service. Very detailed and thorough . I never write reviews unless a company has left a lasting good impression with their job. And I give it to this company. Thank you very much.

Repaired my HVAC. Maintenance fee was extremely good. Repairs were pricey though. Did not show up on time but I would still hire again unless someone tells me of a better deal.

Fantastic company! Provided a great price with only a description and picture of the repair that was needed. First contacted John around noon and they were at my house ready to repair the washer valve by 4pm. Work was completed very well that afternoon and they were very pleasant to deal with. Very responsive and high quality work with great customer service. I would definitely recommend them to others and I would definitely hire them again.

Chris arrived at the scheduled time and even gave a call ahead of time that he was on his way. He was very friendly and courteous. After describing that I needed the common ground wires connected to both my air handlers he quickly got to work and accomplished the task. He went above and beyond my request by installing the new thermostat with out me asking. He was through to make sure that it was hooked up correctly and that both heating and air conditioning was still working properly. He also offered to come back if anything wasn't working as it should. I would highly recommend Grand Air for HVAC work. Thanks Chris for a job well done.

I noticed that my air conditioner was blowing warm air when I woke up Saturday morning, and it was making a screeching noise. I went online to find repair companies and found Thumbtack, which showed me some options. After checking out H&I services I decided to give them a call. Ken is very professional, knowledgeable and considerate. He was able to come out within hours of the call. After checking the unit, he thoroughly explained the problem and the cost to fix it which was a very reasonable price. I highly recommend his company.

I didn’t think there was much hope for my leaky, moldy outdated ceramic tile shower with some god-awful floor base that stained so bad. I have a decent house but this shower area was a nightmare. Well I really lucked out getting Ivan via Thumbtack. I heartily recommend him for any drywall, tile and grout creation you might want. He’s an absolute craftsman. He doesn’t just repair, he creates a new design look. Every time I look at my new shower area I am amazed and pleased to find everything is square and plumb, the tiles are cut and installed perfectly and the tile and grout color enhances the new chrome and glass door he picked out. As a matter of fact he picked out everything on account of I have no design sense and, I’m told, I may as well be color blind as to try to pick out something tasteful. No matter to Ivan. Since he knows what he is doing he picked out everything perfectly. He also took time to prepare all the surfaces and treat the area against mold before installing new waterproof drywall and a modern floor and drain area. The he artistically created a tile enclosure like no other I’ve see. It’s not that he increased the value of my home much more than I paid him; it’s not that he worked fast but careful and it's not the very fair price he gave me. It’s because I feel happily amazed when I enter the room and see his craftsmanship. That peace of mind hardly compares with the little he charged me compared to the result I got back. Bonus: He has a pleasing professional personality that is extremely rare in contractors these days. You can trust him to listen to you and still create a masterpiece.

After talking with and getting bids from several AC companies, we contacted Cooling for Less through Thumbtack. Gerry was very straightforward, honest and friendly, taking time to work with us and answer all of our questions. Although they are a smaller company, which sometimes makes quick replies and scheduling a little difficult, they were honest and very easy to work with. I would recommend Gerry and Cooling for Less to anyone in need of AC repair or replacement.

Technician was friendly enough but it was clear he (or the company in general) did not have the knowledge to repair my brand of water softener. After five minutes of pushing buttons he said it needed to be replaced for $2,000! I said no way and called another company with a more expensive service call fee that was able to repair this specific brand - for $230. Unfortunately I still had to pay the first service call fee too of $39.

All Area A/C & Heating, Inc. is simply AWESOME. Here is why. I was trying to sell my house but have no money to repair my a/c fan in the attic. This company took the job on contingency, that is to be paid when my house sells. That is awesome but I'm not done yet. Just on demand, this company traveled over 30 miles to come and fix my a/c unit and today, my a/c is working like new. Above all, they only charged me less than half the price of what the other company quoted me. Now comes the best part. When I called one the Valley's major A/C repair company about 3 years earlier, they recommended that I change my whole a/c unit and that I can finance it with them. They quoted me about $6000.00. When All Area A/C came to work on my a/c, they revealed that my a/c unit was still under warranty. Thus, All Area A/C saved me $thousands and did great job for me. This is what I call awesome service. I highly recommend ALL AREA A/C & HEATING, INC. to do a great job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.
