Many years we lived in this area, we have had landscape projects done from time to time, but none has compared to the HDK Landscape, James and Cory takes a holistic view of each project, addressing drainage, erosion, and other daily issues in order to achieve an aesthetically beautiful landscape that is environmentally respectful and will endure over time. This month, HDK Landscape and outstanding crew transformed our muddy backyard , uninspiring landscape in the front of our house into a beautiful, inviting garden, all with less than a week's notice, finishing in time before pool guys started the pebble tech. From planting trees to turf to irrigation , travertine and pavers. BBQ, Lights as well as vegetable garden. I agree 100% with other reviewers about the factors that differentiate the HDK Landscapes from the competition: OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE: James and Cory went out of their way to accommodate our request for a landscape transformation on very short notice. James met with us in the evenings, he shared ideas about other completed projects so I could better understand ideas, and he re-arranged work schedule and that of his crew in order to get the work done in time. From project beginning to end, James and all of the crew members have been extraordinarily courteous and professional! EXCELLENT CLIENT COMMUNICATION: There will be no surprises in any project that the James undertakes, James truly collaborates with clients in order to accomplish their objectives. James and Cory begins by listening carefully, explaining what is feasible, suggesting alternative plans if infeasible, presenting itemized costs, revising plans based on our feedback, and keeping us informed every step of the way during project execution. FRUGAL & KIDS SAFE USE OF MATERIALS: Cost consciousness and Kids safe are the foundation of every project that the HDK undertakes. Designs that will not only please clients. They never tries to upsell! Explains the possibilities, but completely understands and respects budgetary constraints. Indeed, plans to split many of plantings from last year to use in this year's project rather than purchasing new plants. My wife and I very much appreciate "no pressure" approach! Ultimately, James cost consciousness results in very reasonable prices as compared to the competition. SUPERB DESIGN: James and Cory has an amazing design sense, using a wide variety of color, texture, and size to create an extraordinary landscape. create unique hardscape designs that enhance both the beauty and longevity of the landscape design. Together, James and Cory achieve amazing results! We are so happy to have found the HDK Land scape for my back yard and patio.

I didn’t think there was much hope for my leaky, moldy outdated ceramic tile shower with some god-awful floor base that stained so bad. I have a decent house but this shower area was a nightmare. Well I really lucked out getting Ivan via Thumbtack. I heartily recommend him for any drywall, tile and grout creation you might want. He’s an absolute craftsman. He doesn’t just repair, he creates a new design look. Every time I look at my new shower area I am amazed and pleased to find everything is square and plumb, the tiles are cut and installed perfectly and the tile and grout color enhances the new chrome and glass door he picked out. As a matter of fact he picked out everything on account of I have no design sense and, I’m told, I may as well be color blind as to try to pick out something tasteful. No matter to Ivan. Since he knows what he is doing he picked out everything perfectly. He also took time to prepare all the surfaces and treat the area against mold before installing new waterproof drywall and a modern floor and drain area. The he artistically created a tile enclosure like no other I’ve see. It’s not that he increased the value of my home much more than I paid him; it’s not that he worked fast but careful and it's not the very fair price he gave me. It’s because I feel happily amazed when I enter the room and see his craftsmanship. That peace of mind hardly compares with the little he charged me compared to the result I got back. Bonus: He has a pleasing professional personality that is extremely rare in contractors these days. You can trust him to listen to you and still create a masterpiece.

Adam and Natalie (brother and sister team) were hired to supplement the design of our landscape and maintain our property in Desert Mountain, Scottsdale. Our property is very extensive and had been previously handled by a high end company. They have been upgrading and maintaining our property for about one year and we continue to be extremely impressed with all aspects of their work. Their designs are creative, they know their business, and they deliver a meticulous and timely work product. They are both very smart, professional and honest. I recommend them without reservation for design, installs and maintenance. You can always count on them to deliver outstanding work. You will love their work and enjoy working with them!

I had a severe windstorm bring down a side Arbor on my home a few weeks ago, I was contacted by Alfredo a General Contractor through the Thumbnail Site in regards to an estimate to replace it. At that time I found out that the Arbor was improperly constructed, and the wood was severely rotten all the way through. Alfredo, and one of his crew members (Evan) provided Outstanding Customer Care to me and to my home. He provided me with a fair and honest estimate with all the labor and material cost included. With no hidden charges later to add on. I watch him and his crew member, take down and replace my Arbor with astonishing accuracy, to the exact measure. I watch Alfredo do math calculation in his head for this project like Einstein would have done. He raised the height of the Arbor to its proper height, attaching it to the fascia board in the proper manner, and not at the lowest elevation that it was originally in, and attached to my home. And wow what a difference it made to the side of my home. It is aestheticly pleasing, not only from the garden view, but from the street as well. Matching the design of my home perfectly! His Customer Care was above reproach, and not as I have dealt with less than honest and caring General Contractors over the years in this 1958 Vintage Home. I am so pleased and impressed with his services that I now plan to have him replace and repair a damaged Pavilion Deck that a so called general contractor that I hired last year to repair my Pavilion deck at that time, who used improper materials, measures, and calculations reparing it, that I fell through its flooring in early spring. I would highly recommend Alfredo and his Company to my neighbors, family, and friends... And I have every intention of doing so, as well as keeping his Business Card, well in hand! Thank You Alfredo, and your crew member. I have nothing negative to say in regards to this General Contractor! Only Praise. I'm adding the damage pictures now and will add the finish Arbor once its painted on Saturday.

From the moment you first talk to Tanner & Michael you know you are in good hands. They listen carefully to what you are looking to achieve with your landscape design, asking questions & offering suggestions. They will then prepare a conceptual design layout and preliminary budget. later they will prepare a suggested plant palette and planting layout. Our idea was to create a Desert Botanical Garden atmosphere in our back yard (this was a complete tear out job) and one of the first comment's we received from guests was that it reminded them of DBG!! They also gave our front yard a new fresher look with some very nice custom steel work, gabion planter and matching mailbox. They also added fresh planting and reworked the dry rock river. We have since added another planter in the front and planter with trellis in the back to hide a tool shed. When it was time to install they showed up when they said they would and worked hard all the time. They finished the job in their stated time frame and left everything clean and tidy. My wife and I were (and still are!!) very pleased with how everything turned out.

We are very happy with our backyard. It's very elegant, a great combination of Arizona/Southwest landscape with a modern flair. They were great to work with. They took our ideas and added their own to make it look great. Our extended family said it looks like a resort. The crew was polite and dependable. The owner knows what he's doing!

We hired Matthew to landscape our backyard on a new build and are so incredibly happy with it! He took my ideas and came up with a design for the backyard and then executed it perfectly. He put in a raised garden, pavers, sod, fire pit, pergola and plant/rock landscaping. He was incredibly meticulous with each aspect of the job. The men he worked for were all very trustworthy and polite. The first day of the job, he began the construction of the fire pit and it was not where I had anticipated it being, so he tore it down and built it up again in the perfect location. He was so nice about it and said that he just wanted us to be happy with the finished product. Matthew had a lot of great information for us about plants (as we are new to Arizona) and helped guide me through which ones to choose. He has followed through on the warranty for the couple of plants that didn't survive the summer and fixed a paver that hadn't set correctly. I would hire Matthew again for any landscaping needs!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
