This was the best money I have ever spent on dog training. We acquired these unhousebroken dogs as adults. I have never had trouble housebreaking dogs before but these guys had us stumped. Bruce spent 2 hours tweaking our current efforts and the results have been miraculous. He called a week later to follow up, which was great too.

My experience with K9 Katelynn dog training has been excellent. When Tom first met my dog, I described him to a friend as "magical with dogs" - silly, but true. It is immediately evident that he has significant experience training both dogs and their owners. It takes work to make progress; I felt a bit like I was in school with my two 20 minute sessions (at a minimum) of dog training "homework" per day. It was very rewarding to see my dog's progress. Tom had an answer to every question I asked, and if you do what he says, you WILL see results. That being said - you have to do what he says! If you are looking for someone to magically fix your dog, you are in the wrong place. Tom teaches you - the owner - how to work with your dog and train him effectively.

I have known Nate for many years; even before he was in the dog training business. I worked along side of him in the hospitality industry for years. Nate has always had an amazing drive, amazing customer service, an unreal ability to teach and patience for days. I've alwsys known Nate to have a love for animals and that starting his own dog training business was his goal. What I greatly respected was Nate didn't want to open a business as soon as he could; he wanted to open it when he knew he could be the best. I got my dog a rescue almost 4 years ago, and my dog suffered from separation anxiety, and other issues. My dog was a rescue from an abusive home. I knew my dog needed help, and I knew Nate had a great reputation. However to be honest i was hesitant to call Nate. The main reason being I don't like to mix friendship and business. After some thought I reached out, and im so glad I did. While I've known Nate for years, he never treated me any different. He was so professional and dedicated and exactly what I needed and what my dog Grover needed. Nate is a perfectionist, an amazing teacher to you as a pet owner and exactly what your dog needs. You never will feel as if though you are not able to ask Nate any question at any tkme. He is responsive and professional and the best! Some trainers may be cheaper, but with Nate you get what you pay for! He is the best! An example of how great Nate did with my dog... I work in a public job where I attend many huge events attended by thousands. After my dog and I worked with Nate, we now attend those events. Children are constantly petting and pulling and doing children like things to my dog. Grover never reacts in any negative fashion. Grover has no issues with the crowd the noises... All he cares about is making me as an owner happy and proud. In closing if you go with any other trainer you are wasting your money! Nate is the best with your dog and with you!

We acquired a rescue lab and had no idea what this boy knew... We hired Balanced Pooches dog training and could not be more impressed with the service John provided. Our boy Tucker is a totally different dog today then he was the day we got him.... We have all learned so much, and We are all works in progress. John was truly interested in working with all of us so we were all on the same page as far as training and building a great relationship to make a balanced home. I don't think words could explain how much this man cares to make every relationship between you and your pet a wonderful one. Hiring John was the best decision we made, and we highly recommend him.

Kimberly came to my home to help me with my two dogs (puppy and older dog) that seemed to be not getting along. She was willing to do an assessment and she gave me amazing feedback as to dog behavior that I did not understand. She was great at interpreting the problem and offered a wonderful solution that is already starting to work. I would highly recommend Kimberly for dog training.

Being new to dog ownership and the "dog world" I was skeptical about training in general. I knew I didn't want some kid from petsmart training me dog but at the same time I wasn't looking for someone who was an elitist and looked down on me for not knowing much about training. I found hunter canine on thumbtack kind of at random. Andrew called me and thoroughly answered all my questions and concerns. The price was fair and comparable to other professional trainers I had inquired about. Having just completed beginner obedience I can say that these guys are great. It's obvious from the minute you start class that Andrew and Chad are passionate about what they do. The facility is amazing, it's big, it's clean, and the trainers are knowledgable and helpful. In just 8 short weeks we've seen massive changes our dogs behavior. The class objectives are clear and the trainers are always attentive to any issue you may have with your dog during class. Even in the group classes the trainers still provide ample one on one time with each dog and their handlers. We enjoyed the class so much that we have enrolled our dog in the CGC prep class and plan on doing more training in the future. I would recommend Hunter Canine to anyone looking for training, if you show up to class and do your part (practicing what you've learned) you won't be disappointed...

Renee's classes were so relaxed and fun. We got a new puppy and this was the first time I'd ever gone to dog training classes. Renee explains how a dog thinks and learns. Teaching them new things is easier than I though it would be. You do need time and patience. I wish I would have done it with our previous dogs. Thanks Renee!

Mary demonstrated compassion in caring for our dogs. When one of our dogs got sick, Mary not only cleaned up the mess, she lovingly cleaned the soiled area on my dog. Mary is a trustworthy resource and cared for our dogs as if they were her own. We highly recommend Mary, and will use her services again.

I love Brandy and Steve. They have paid very close attention to my two dogs, Charlie and Frankie. We came in with two hyper active working dogs that had little training but have picked up so much information in training class. I am trying to beg them to do a level 2 training class for my dogs to be in. I love how attentive they were before and after class with Frankie and Charlie. I also realized a lot of the work was to train me. They have trained me well. I spend 30 min a day with both of my dogs training them separately with all the tricks they taught me in there class. I would highly recommended this obedience class with Brandy and Steve. They are very reasonably priced as well as they answered my response to their services within minutes. They treat my dogs as there own and send out weekly emails regarding all the dogs in the class and what we need to work on. On the off hours of training Brandy answers my texts and sends me additional info regarding activities for working dogs that she thinks would be good for my babes. One week I didn’t have a second handler and she had her husband help me out. She’s a serious gem and moving forward I will only work with her. She’s passionate about what she does and understands dogs so well! Thanks Brandy!

People comment on my well behaved and obedient dogs - it is because of training from Waggin' Train. Waggin Train helped me train my dogs based on my lifestyle and needs and my dogs' personality. Waggin' Train also helped me introduce an adopted dog into my home. Amazing results - the new dog is quickly learning and my other dog is loving her new sister quicker than I expected. Thanks Waggin' Train!

Very happy with TLC, we get a note describing exactly what happened on the walk. Our dogs also love the team, as a family with high fear rescue dogs that was always a worry we had. I recommend them to everyone!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?
