Sergio G. says, "I had the pleasure of working with Gonzalez Family Construction, and I can’t say enough good things about my experience. Humberto was incredibly friendly, polite, and patient throughout the entire process. He took the time to explain what needed to be done and educated me along the way, which gave me a lot of peace of mind. He helped me renovate my bathroom, and the results exceeded my expectations. Not only was he punctual and honest, but he also went above and beyond by handling several extra tasks around the house—including the installation of a doggy door—which made a huge difference. It’s rare to find someone who combines skill, professionalism, and genuine care for their work the way Humberto does. If you’re looking for quality craftsmanship and trustworthy service, I highly recommend supporting small, family-owned businesses like Gonzalez Family Construction. They truly put their heart into what they do, and it shows in the results."See more

Lisa B. says, "Paul is a gem. He is a true craftsman and has incredible attention to detail and doing the job right the first time. I am fairly sure he can do anything! He replaced my rotting fascia boards, as well as other damaged exterior wood. He replaced my front door, and as it turned out I purchased the wrong size door and Paul was able to build out the door frame. I am 100% sure that if I had hired anyone else for this job I would have had to return the door and purchase the right size, but Paul was able to make it work even though it took him considerable extra time to do so. I had a double bifold door that I bought on the Lowes clearance rack that also needed to have a complete revision in order to be hung. Paul never flinched about the added work to make this door hangable and it looks fantastic! Of course while he was here I found other things that needed to be done which he happily added on. All done with quality and speed. He is more expensive than your average handyman but my mind on this is forever changed as you get what you pay for. Paul used to own his own contractor business and as problems came up he always knew the RIGHT way to do absolutely everything. He pointed out several safety issues and explained everything in detail. Also most importantly he knows what he CAN'T do and freely tells you this. I highly recommend Paul!"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Search online for top-rated carpenters in the Phoenix area. Review several online profiles to understand their work history, and look for reviews from satisfied (and dissatisfied) customers.

When you’re ready to hire, contact three or five carpenters to ask for a free price quote and verify that they hold insurance and the proper licenses. Carpenters in Phoenix must adhere to strict licensing requirements through the Arizona Registrar of Contractors. Finish carpenters should hold the R-60 specialty license. Remodeling and repair carpenters should hold an R-61 specialty, and most other residential carpenters should hold an R-7 license.

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.
