We had our whole house painted by The Best Painters... I mean I everything in the home got a fresh coat of paint, the ceilings, the trim, the doors and the walls plus the garage. Alex did an amazing job fixing multiple places that had significant drywall damage (one area was so bad by the fireplace my family thought we got new sheetrock not a patch job). We also paid for new 4" baseboards to be installed, they look amazing and the price was hard to beat for the quality of work. What we liked most about Albert and his team was they came back at the end job and we could point out a few things we would like touch up. Albert even said over the next few months if we find any areas that need touch-up to let him know and he would send someone out to fix it. We have arrived a few painters and by fair, The Best Painters really are the BEST!

Rigo was great to work with. He did an excellent job and was quick about it. I could have probably found someone who was cheaper, but the quality would have been cheaper and taken more of my time. I recommend Rigo for your drywall needs.

Doug did an excellent job. He was professional with his attention to detail and patient with me as I continued to add tasks to the job. He painted our garage doors/trim and shutters after repairing them and restoring them to good working order. He also recaulked our entire master bathroom, straightened out and tightened all the kitchen cupboards as well as did some drywall repair and hung curtain rods. I would recommend him to anyone in need and most definitely hire in the future. Oh, and he also fixed the striping on the bottom of our door going to/from the garage. He took it off the hinges and did it right by ensuring it was stapled onto the door (wasn't done by our homebuilder).

Jim did an excellent job painting! I wanted the job done before moving in and he worked me into his schedule. The brand of paint he used is very good quality and he can help with choosing colors. He also did some drywall repair and can do other handyman projects. I would highly recommend giving Jim a call.

I hired Adrian for a project that involved installing a hanging rod in the closet and anchoring it into the drywall, as well as hanging a piece of artwork. He kept me in the loop as to his arrival time. He was very friendly, professional and completed the job in a timely manner at a reasonable price. I would highly recommend him for any type of home project, and will hire him in the future should I need any kind of assitance.

Do you ever watch one of those DIY shows on television and suddenly believe you could be a craftsman producing amazing results in a fraction of the time and cost the "professionals" charge? So you set out to create something amazing only to realize that you have neither the experience nor the skill to even approach something you would be proud to show your family and friends. That basically sums up my latest project of creating an office out of a spare bedroom. After demolition, wiring, and elementary drywall came time for finish work. A few YouTube videos and several visits to the local home improvement store quickly made me realize that I was in way over my head. So instead of trudging away throwing mud and money all over the room I swallowed my pride and a large amount of sheetrock dust and admitted defeat. I needed professional help (despite what my wife says I meant professional sheet rocking help not the mental therapy she constantly suggests). I turned to Thumbtack and quickly had several bids all very competitive. In the end I selected Time4LSM. The decision was not just based on price. David answered all my questions and even made suggestions of what I could do whether I went with him or not. He was very professional and a wealth of knowledge. At first we scheduled the work to be done at the end of the week but after I explained my dilemma and how other pieces of the office made this kind of an emergency, David offered to be at my house at 7 AM on Monday morning (just a day after I gave him the job). I eagerly accepted. David arrived early to the job with all of his equipment. He was courteous and professional. He worked quickly and went above and beyond making sure all of the texturing matched the existing house. He offered tips and was in and out quickly helping me put my project back on schedule. I would definitely recommend him with confidence. My wife has permanently posted his business card in plain sight almost as a Handyman Bat Signal so the next time I binge watch HGTV and get some kind of crazy remodeling idea she has someone to reach out to in order to save what little ego I have left.

Finesse painting did a great job painting the interior of my house, and did so for a reasonable price. They were courteous, professional, and fast. Nick was upfront about the cost for the job, and repaired all of the holes I had in my drywall. There were areas where curtain rods were removed, and Nick took care of them as well. If I need painting done again, I'll be sure to hire Finesse painting.

Mike was very timely. Came out within 2 hrs to look at job and gave me price. It was a drywall job so he put first coat on and returned a few hrs later to finish. We were very pleased with service and plan to use him in the near future.

EXCELLENT RESULTS!!! SOLID TEAM, CONSISTENT FOLLOW THROUGH!!!! THIS IS WHAT WORKING WITH A CONTRACTOR SHOULD BE!!! Josh Rudin and his team at ASAP RESTORATION completely restored our home after it was flooded. We are so happy we ended up hiring them. They knew how to work with our insurance company and were always delivering a great quality job on time. Jason was our Project Manager and I know we couldn't have gotten through all of this without his help as well. Everything from sheetrock to drywall and painting to door trims was well done. We got to know the staff well, and they were such nice people with good work ethic. ASAP also has great sub-contractors. We couldn't be happier with our kitchen and bath cabinets and countertops. They recommended great quality products and have the right professionals for installation. I'm in the design business myself and had never been through an experience like this with flood damage. I can't say enough about the professionalism and follow through from ASAP. I would and will recommend them to my friends and family. Also important to note, if they have a point of view on something that would look better, listen to them, they know their business. We went back and forth on a few finish options and whenever I took their advice, I was happy with the end result! I may be a designer, but I believe you can always learn something new if you stay open! Here's the reality check. You as the customer have to do your homework too. Don't expect them to bring you lots of floor samples and counter top samples and cabinet samples. That is time consuming and not part of their job. But do feel free to ask them for advice on where to go to check out materials, they have great sources!! My opinion is, when you go through something like this, you have to take the time to understand what your insurance company is willing to pay for. Talk to your adjustor if you have questions. And once you know, for example, what your budget is for kitchen countertops, go check out material pricing at Lowe's. Then you can have a reasonable conversation with your contractor. If you don't do your own homework and just leave it in your contractor's hands, you will be fine - just don't complain if it isn't exactly what you imagined. Hiring a contractor is a 2 way relationship. If you don't do your part, you shouldn't complain unless something is actually installed wrong. We are very happy with all the work performed by ASAP!! SO GRATEFUL TO ASAP RESTORATION FOR MAKING OUR HOME BEAUTIFUL AGAIN!!

We needed a dryer vent re-attached and some drywall repaired/textured/painted. I had three other people we have used in the past not return texts/calls so I turned to Thumbtack for help. I found Mr. Right Handyman (Joseph) and he was quick to respond, and find a time that worked for my schedule, his schedule, and our tenant's schedule. He's very professional and punctual, and he did an awesome job at getting this project finished. We will definitely be using him again in the future.

We found Larry and Joe on Thumbtack. They are both very nice and very skilled at everything that they did for us. Their drywall and texturing ability is amazing - you can't even tell there was a hole in the wall. Thye are also great at installing deadbolts and changing locks. They also installed a ceiling fan. They did a great job replacing the outside siding from termite damage. They removed a doggie door and covered the hole so that you can't tell it was there. We highly recommend them!!!!

Venus Homes recently remodeled two of my bathrooms, added an additional full bath, replaced all my plumbing, added a hallway, and tiled my entire house...in less than a month. Narsay was professional, punctual, and was precise in his project coordination. He was able to get a tile guy, electrician, plumber, and drywall guy all to work in perfect order to get the job done cleanly and quickly. The crew was respectful of my house and honest. I had to give them full access to my house while I was at work and nothing ever went missing or was used without my permission. (They never even touched something as small as the thermostat). The entire job was done quickly and well. The tile guy was amazing. His lines and cuts are as good as I've seen. Narsay was communicative and proactive in identifying the best way to make the changes I wanted. I had 3 bids for this project and Narsay was the most positive and enthusiastic of the three. He was genuinely excited and confident about this project. He followed through and made good on his word. There were no surprises or additional costs. Narsay did what he quoted and was reasonable and fair. Multiple friends have requested Narsay's number now that they have seen his work. I highly recommend Venus Homes for your project. I will add photos when I'm done putting in the right furniture and painting the walls. Rob

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
