Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should you paint your house's exterior?

Expert opinion is mixed, but the general range is five to 10 years. However, this depends on many factors. Houses in harsh climates with extreme temperatures, lots of dust or ice or intense sunlight may need more frequent paint jobs than those in temperate climates. Also, wood houses will need new paint more often due to the changes within the wood itself. You should also consider painting the outside of your house if you plan to sell it.

What is the best exterior house paint?

Acrylic paints are generally considered good options for today’s home exterior paint jobs. You can also choose an oil-based or latex (water-based) paint. Also, look into specialty paints for your doors, roof, gutters, siding and other exterior surfaces.

How many coats of paint does the exterior of a house need?

Your house’s exterior will likely need two coats of paint. With two coats, your house will look more even and solid in color and will be better protected from moisture and the elements. The painting should always occur over a primed and well-prepared surface.

What colors should I paint my house exterior?

You have many options when it comes to paint colors. For example, an off-white creates a traditional look, and it looks great with a bright door to contrast it. Yellow is a happy color that, while light blue is reminiscent of an oceanfront style. Gray houses are also on trend, providing a classy and neutral tone that remains warm and inviting.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Is it worth it to hire a painter to paint my house's exterior?

It is nearly always worth it to hire a painter to paint your home’s exterior. While you may feel comfortable painting a small, one-story home, anything with multiple stories, dormers or other complexities are best left to a pro.

Additionally, it’s best to let the pros handle older homes. Any time extensive prep work is needed — such as repairing chipping, bubbling, cracking or peeling paint, or fixing caulking and substrate issues — a pro can  handle it.

Can I paint my own house exterior?

While you may choose to paint a door, ground-level window trim and other parts of your house’s exterior, it’s really a job best left to the professionals. One of the main reasons is experience. An experienced painter knows how to handle the prep work, spot problems and identify sources of future trouble, all while getting the job done more efficiently. They are also experienced with spending long hours on tall ladders. If you want high-quality work, it’s best to hire a professional painter near you

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

Contractor very responsive to review work and provide quote for exterior painting job. Work started on time. Dunn Edwards paint paper samples from pallets did not translate well into real colors, there was a need to choose exterior trim color three times. Contractor did not do any of the painting, used a pro painters who worked very hard. Overall paint results estimate 9 out of 10. Three stars overall for the following reasons: 1) Contractor rushed to finish the job at the end of day 3. Left numerous paint spots and a couple of overspray areas, as well as masking material on roof. 2) Dumped paint job debris in our alley trashcan and our recycle bin when it should have been carted off . 3) Instead of confirming new exterior trim colors by buying small sample, contractor purchased full compliant of paint and at the end of the job expected us to pay for 6 extra gallons of paint we will never use. Overall a good result.

We asked Eddie to paint one side of our house and we couldn't be happier. He did a fantastic job matching the paint and painting our house. We called him 4 days ago and he was able to fit us in his schedule right away. We will definitely call him again for exterior or interior paint jobs in the future! Very professional and punctual too!

Albert and his crew showed up on time and did a great job on the exterior of my house! They pulled the dirt and rocks away from the foundation, added caulk where I needed it, and covered everything up completely before painting. Would definitely hire again.

I had paint peeling all the way around the base of the house due to moisture damage. Dario provided a favorable quote and showed up when he said he would to do the job. Dario pulled the rock back and laid paper to catch the debris. He cleaned up after himself as he worked and was very neat in spite of the messy job of scraping off paint. He scraped all the loose paint clean and then pressure washed the area. He then sealed the concrete and finished the job with a fresh coat of paint. There were several areas on the front of the house, which were textured that he had to fill in with concrete patch and re-texture. Dario told me he could do the job right. And he exceeded my expectations, so he won my trust. He says he can also re-stain our kitchen cabinets to meet my wife's expectations. I believe he can, so we are waiting for his quote. I'll review him on that job if he wins the bid. For now, he is highly recommended for any exterior wall repair and any paint job.
