Hired on Thumbtack

I hired Steve to fabricate a built-in shelving unit in my office according to a professional, pre-designed plan which I'd sent him in advanced. There were many delays and re-scheduling to accommodate his issues. Before work was to begin, he called and said he had never heard of the requisite material, plastic laminate over particle board. I had to meet him at the Home Depot to show him what it was. That is when I should have listened to my gut and moved on. But I didn’t. When he finally arrived to begin the work, I noticed how he had handled the laminate board product, i.e., like raw lumber carelessly tossed into the back of his truck. He had placed heavy tools directly on top of the boards causing gouges in several of them and roughing up the edges. He had not cut all the pieces to the correct measurement, and had to return to his shop to redo the work. In fact, everything he did had to be redone causing further delays. He was very slow and clumsy in handling his tools, blowing out the sides of 2 boards with screws drilled in crookedly. After I discovered that the peg holes he had drilled for adjustable shelves didn't line up at all, which would have made it impossible for the shelves to lay properly, I'd had enough and terminated the job. What should have been a 3-day project at most had extended to more than 3 weeks. Steve's response to his errors: Re. the gouges, "You're just gonna put books on top of that anyway." Re. the blow-out areas, "That's easy to patch up." (I know that laminate isn't patchable). Re. the misaligned peg holes, "It's very hard to make those line up with a drill press," as though I should accept shoddy work because he found it hard. I don't believe Steve should be in this business any longer, and I would caution anyone considering hiring him to keep looking for a competent carpenter.

I was very surprised when I read this review from Lynne. Up until this time I had no idea she was unhappy with my work. I could tell how ever that she seemed to be very impatient by the almost daily calls and emails asking when it would be finished. I explained to her that I had other work and that I could not work full time on her project. She didn't seem to care about that only when I could finish hers. The day she decided to terminate the job I had scheduled the entire day to be at her house to finish. She had requested that I cut the pieces at my shop and build it at her house. I should have trusted my gut feeling and not done so. While there she would stand over me and watch every move I made. I don't dispute that a few mistakes were made but nothing that couldn't be quickly and easily repaired. With a piece this large over 70 separate cuts there is bound to be a few miscuts. But I think most telling of her thoughts is this statement from an email sent to me after I contacted her about her review. She said "I've had work done in my home before - in fact my entire kitchen is a reno - and I remember being mesmerized watching the various tradesmen at work. Never did I have that sinking feeling that their skills were not up to par. She never expressed any sinking feelings to me. On the day she decided to stop the project I had returned to my shop to put peg holes in a section that I had overlooked. As I was about to leave to go back to her house she had decided not to wait for my return. She had taken my assistant who was waiting at her house and brought him to my house. She had never been to my house previously. My assistant asked her to wait outside that he would have me come out. She disregarded his request and came barging into my house uninvited and unannounced and walked right into my bedroom. She starting ranting about boards cut wrong, holes didn't line up, and that it was taking too long and she didn't want to continue. I said ok that I was disappointed but understood and agreed with her. I asked her to at least pay for the almost $400 in materials and she said she would only pay for boards that hadn't been cut and that I had to have a receipt for each piece. I said ok that I would bring them to her tomorrow. She said no she would be gone all day. I said fine then next week. When she came to my house she brought a few of the pieces with her but the main pieces were still at her house. After thinking about it I decided I wouldn't wait until next week and decided to go early the next morning unannounced and uninvited as she had done to me. When I arrived at her house I called her but no answer (surprise) and left a message. After waiting several minutes I went to the front door and rang the bell about 7-8 times and knocked with no response. I looked through a window in the garage door and could see her car there so I knew she was there. I went back to the front door and said out loud that I wasn't leaving until I had my wood. A few minutes later she appeared and said she had been in the shower and couldn't answer the door. I said ok but she didn't look wet her hair was dry but yeah ok. I then loaded up the remaining pieces and left. It was after all this had happened that this review was posted. You can draw your own conclusions. This project could have been completed if Lynne had not been so impatient. It takes time and good materials to create quality furniture. You can’t get quality furniture using pressboard. I could go on but I think you get the picture and I will let my other 16 five star reviews speak for themselves. Thank you for your interest in SML Property Services.

Hired on Thumbtack

This was our first time using thumbtack and we did not have a great first experience. Stephen came over and he spent 20 min inspecting and taking apart the washer. He forgot his flashlight and had to borrow ours, lost his screw driver inside the washer and had to spend time finding it. He didn't even put the panel back together when he was done looking at the washer so we were left with a mess. The rest of the time he spent drinking soda in his car and worst of all he used his service time to take a poop in our toilet but we still got charged 65$ for the few minutes he took to look at our washer and tell us he can't do anything else with it. It wasn't worth the service and I would definitely want my money back for that terrible recommendation

Pure fantasy. Never used a screw driver, He offered to let me use his flashlight, I didn't put the panel (just one panel) because I thought I would be coming back with the part to fix the problem. He decided the part was too expensive and said he was not going to fix it. I asked if he wanted me to come back and install the panel but he said he would take care of it.The machine was located in the bathroom and I shut the door so I could get down low to see the back of the machine not to poop in his toilet. This man is rude and shady.
