- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
This is a personal approach and one that I find very effective when working with new students and their families. In my many years of teaching and tutoring, I have realized there are three main reasons tutors do not seem to be as helpful as they can be. So the first few sessions are a mixture of interviews, tutor sessions and aptitude evaluations. As with any job the tutor and student need to have the right chemistry. At first we are both trying to get to know each other and, personally, I enjoy when my students don't see me as another school teacher, parent or authority figure unless it is necessary. During those first few sessions it is common not to get as much work done as preferred, especially on the first day because the student is often behind, confused, frustrated, resistant to having a tutor, or any number of other feelings. I try to quickly dispel any concerns they may have about getting a tutor, and address their fears and concerns. Also, if they are behind I like to talk to their teachers and let them know that I am now working with the student. I will also ask if they will accept any late or missing assignments, and request copies of those assignments. Finally, I like to watch how the student is able to grasp concepts and I will quiz them on concepts they should already be familiar with. One main reason a student falls behind is knowledge gaps. It makes it nearly impossible to learn something new using building blocks of older material that was never learned or never understood. So I will as quickly as possible find and address those knowledge gaps as to get the student caught up and acing tests in no time!
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am always finding reasons to take classes and attend school. I LOVE school and LOVE learning! Most recently I completed anatomy and physiology and I also completed a ceramics class. I am also always reading educational journals and news articles to make sure I'm up to date on the latest information, laws, rules, and exam changes. I enjoy school and I think my passion for learning rubs off a lot on my students and those around me; however, I do also enjoy getting my hands dirty, and I next plan on taking a cooking class or a bead making class along side maybe taking a marketing class.
