We had a stuck back door that was driving us nuts and a couple of small projects around the house that needed a handy touch. They did a great job, were clean, polite and professional and we would hire them again in the future.

My gate was broken in the wind and rather than order a new custom gate Jared fixed my old one (better than new, he added some bracing). I am happy with his work and have asked him to come back to install some gutters.

Tony is phenomenal! We cannot recommend him enough. He is a very skilled and knowledgeable craftsman with meticulous attention to detail. He truly exceeded our expectations. We needed to refurbish an inherited settee sofa and chair, which are also very sentimental pieces. We wanted to go completely green with organic and nontoxic materials and strip it down to the frame. It was crucial we find someone who could tackle the eco-friendly task and preserve the integrity of the pieces. After speaking with Tony, we learned he used many of the techniques and materials necessary to build an eco-friendly piece. Making a 'green' sofa requires not only more labor but the expertise to do so correctly. Also, the fabric we chose wasn't the easiest to work with, but Tony never complained and said he would make it work. Not only did he make it work, he even made a custom trim from the fabric! The pieces look spectacular and are extremely comfortable. We will definitely be using Tony in the future. BONUS-He also builds custom furniture from the ground up!

I needed a cabinet/bookcase extended by around six feet. The job was complex, because the existing piece was detailed and well crafted, and the extension had to match perfectly for it to look right. James Khatab from Prosource Builders was professional and confident from the beginning. He came and made measurements, then produced a detailed drawing of his building plans. Then he and Ignacio came over and executed the plans beautifully. His craftsmanship and professionalism exceeded my expectations - the extension is literally flawless - even the paint! Clearly, James has a commitment to perfection. He's tireless, professional, and a great communicator. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

Mike at Nordik Construction did some drywall repair and painting in our living room after a plumbing mishap. Mike was professional and dependable. He showed up when promised and fulfilled the job without incident. Due to drying time of the drywall and texturing, the project took a few hours spanned over about 6 business days, which we felt was within a normal range. His bid was also within the range of other bids we received. We would definitely hire Mike again.

Angel and his son Steve were wonderful. They installed a cat feeding shelf and steps for my kittens so the dog can't eat their food. The measurements were exact, they worked quickly and were very reasonably priced. I highly recommend using them!

I hired Brandon (Noll Construction Solutions), based on positive referrals from few friends who have also hired him, to build out fence and deck area in backyard. Brandon not only delivered all as promised, he finished the job early and, most of all, at a price that didn't break the bank! I've dealt with many construction, builder, repair men before, but none as amazing, honest, fair and hardworking as Brandon. He's truly one of a kind!! Thank you Brandon :)

Danny is top notch! So knowledgeable and friendly. He's always on time, cleans up after himself when he finishes, and just does beautiful work. I hire him every time I need any carpentry or handyman stuff around my house. My friends recommended him a couple of years ago and I'm so glad they did. And my dog loves him, which is the best recommendation in my book. Some of the projects he's done are: built fence around property, built custom dining nook, custom storage and shelving, hung curtains and pictures, just to name a few.

I am a general contractor; no job is too small. My company does a lot of bathroom remodels, additions, doors, windows, baseboards, crown molding, and plumbing.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

      Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
