I have a home in Huntington Beach that had an existing furnace and ductwork. I wanted to install AC utilizing the existing system. I consulted with several HVAC contractors and received quotes. Mina was the most knowledgeable of the group of contractors, provided the best suggestions, and also had a very competitive price. During the installation the ductwork turned out to be in poor condition. Mina replaced the ductwork and only charged me the cost of material and not the labor. For anyone who has done contracting this in unheard of. Change orders are often outrageously priced. Mina is an honest man who does good work and cares about satisfaction with the job. If you have the opportunity to use Mina I highly recommend him. The system has been installed and running for 1 month and all continues to work great. Thank you Mina.

Air Duct Professionals did a fantastic job on my duct cleaning project. I gave them a count of AC vents and exhaust fans for their estimate. They not only quoted me the most competitive price but they held their pricing. They showed up on time and even came earlier to help work around my schedule. The technician was very professional and cleaned up after himself. He made sure to cover our furniture with plastic so the dust never spread. This is a truly professional contractor and I would definitely recommend hiring them.

Sam is truly the best OC has to offer! He fixed our commercial building's AC with nearly a BROKEN LEG! He was literally on crutches doing the job... Our coworkers have been working in the unforgiving heat for about 2 weeks and we really needed the AC fixed in the upstairs office. i contacted Sam, and not only did he find the issue right away (as all AC companies we brought in couldn't seem to pinpoint what it was), but he STILL came in the next day, driven to finish his job even with the injury he got from the day before. He brought his sweet daughter in to shadow him and make sure he doesn't fall, carry heavy things, help him down, etc. I insisted him to not overdo it, but he was determined! My company and I appreciate you so much, Sam. Thank you so much for completing this daunting task just to make our office space more breathable. Wishing you a speedy recovery!!!

I would highly recommend this contractor/business to anyone interested in their AC services. From the start of negotiations, through he final install, Tommy (owner) was professional and informative on walking me through the entire system. Along with that, he and his crew of workers were very kind and patient with me and my family members during their entire visit and installation process. Again, this company represents professionalism to the tee!

I wish all contractors were as responsive as Air-O-Stat. I had a small flood that blew out two furnaces. When I called that sent a tech out the next day and gave me a specific time for the appointment (rather than the normal some time between 12 and 5) and he was on time! They fully explained what was wrong and went to get replacement circuit boars and installed them immediately. I was a difficult issue to deal with since all the functioning parts of the furnaces had been under water but the fixed it quickly and were a delight to deal with. Will definitely use them exclusively in the future.

Jesse is a true professional and very knowledgeable electrician. He came out very quickly to install a couple outlets, replace some fluorescent lighting in our office and hook up the electrical to new cubicles. This guy knows his stuff and sticks to his word. He had to come back the following day because we needed to do some other work, and he showed up exactly as he promised. Very rare quality in contractors and this guy earned his 40 5star reviews.

Our central AC unit went out on the hottest day of the year. Within just seven minutes of my making the request on Thumbtack (which I did in the early evening), Ziad got back to me with a quote and let me know he could be there at 9 a.m. the very next morning. I had called seven or eight HVAC companies prior to this and they all gave me a two to three week lead time. Ziad came first thing in the morning, diagnosed and fixed the issue (he installed a new compressor), and charged exactly what he said he would charge. I could not be more thankful for his promptness and professionalism.

Put out bids on thumbtack Saturday afternoon, an hour later had three bids, but one stood out from the rest. It was All stars. I had described my issue, there response was far and above accurate, and included suggestions from a partial repair to a complete new unit with pricing. and even came out the next day, a Sunday, and it was Father's Day. Sal was terrific to work with, and considering it was exceedingly hot, he was able to install the new A/C unit on my roof the following day. I had spoken to three other HVAC companies, none of them were even near All stars prices for a brand unit, by half, or even able to come out to talk to me for a week. I agreed to use his service, and Monday morning one of his co-workers arrived, removed the old unit and coolant, a few hours later the crane arrived and Sal, the A/C unit was installed in a few hours. It's been about two months, the unit works great, no issues, none. One of my neighbors had an issue a month ago, I recommended All stars, he called them and two hours later they were here repairing there A/C unit. They're professionalism, timeliness, and they're quality work ethic is second to none. Save yourself the time and effort and aggravation of looking for a great air conditioning company, just call All Stars, you'll be very satisfied.

Max showed up on time and was really friendly. His positive demeanor immediately put me at ease. He took his time (which I appreciate) and looked over our blower unit. I was convinced that it was a blown motor. Luckily it was just a capacitor. Once again, he did not rush. He fixed that problem plus he located the wire that was causing the capacitor to burn up. However, he only charged me the labor to replace the capacitor. He was great about cleaning up his work. There are so many sleazy people in the HVAC business, but Max is one of the good guys. I'd call him again in a heartbeat.

Rob is so awesome!!! The AC went down at one of my stores, and instead of just shutting off, it started blowing hot air. The store was 101 degrees on a Sunday, which is our busiest day. I called at least 20 techs and either they did not work or do not work on commercial units. Rob came out in a very timely manner and saved the day. I highly recommend him!

My experience with Velavi, from removal of floor furnace to completed installation of furnace, AC, and duct work, was fabulous. There might be other companies that are equally as good, but I doubt you could find one that is better. The installation passed all tests by an independent contractor with flying colors. Our city building inspector was impressed by the quality of work. Get a quote. You won't regret it. The only problem I had was with Thumbtack. I was curious about their service, so I signed up as a customer. I already had requested four quotes based on Yelp reviews and decided to add one from Thumbtack. I was soon getting emails from five companies other than Velavi. Then I started getting update emails from Thumbtack on the status of the project. I ignored all the emails until the installation was done. At which time I was asked to write a review. They listed five companies to select from. Velavi was not one of the five choices I was given, so I looked for an option to unsubscribe. None. Now I am feeling like I do when phone solicitors keep calling me multiple times... "irrigated"... Thumbtack, if you are reading this, please unsubscribe me. Do yourself a favor. Give other dissatisfied customers the option of terminating the unwanted emails.

I am honored to be Vern Hackett's first review... My German Shepherd puppy decided ripping the wiring from the central AC/Heating unit to the house was a fun idea, she ripped it out of the wall so bad that the remaining wires to connect weren't even visible. I got multiple service call quotes but Vern was the only one that gave me a rough estimate based on the issue not just what his service call would be. He came out the next morning, was extremely friendly and professional. While he worked he told me exactly what he was doing and checking and gave me best & worst case scenario as he went. Because of the nature of the damage any dishonest contractor would have easily been able to make me pay an arm & a leg thinking the whole thing would need to be rewired, I am grateful to have found Vern because even though it was not easy he managed to pull enough wire to connect to. I will definitely be a return customer and recommend him to friends & family. If you want someone reliable, knowledgeable, and honest then Vern is your guy!!!!!!

As a general contractor, we have worked with many HVAC companies in the past and Aeris is by far the most reliable and our go to company for AC systems. We never use cheap companies and rather pay more usually to avoid headaches on the job but Aeris pricing is very fair considering the quality and service they provide us. Highly recommend them!

Under-promise and over-deliver. That's 5-star service. Bill did everything he said he would and more without going over his original bid. Also he always had a good attitude and didn't leave a mess the way many contractors do. We're very happy with our new furnace and will definitely use these guys again.

Had multiple contractors come out to give us an evaluation/quote on our HVAC system. Everyone except TJ came in and started telling me what I needed without listening to what my problems and issues were with the system. TJ took the time to listen to what my issues were and recommended a couple solutions to fix. We ultimately replaced the entire system (compressor, furnace, etc) and added a new duct line and vent register. TJ rerouted the gas line to our furnace, relocated and hung the furnace in our attic, installed a smart thermostat in a new location, and more. His crew is very friendly and they all work quickly. They leave the work site cleaner than when they arrived which is so nice. Their quotes are very reasonable compared to what the other contractors were quoting. TJ even checked in the next week after everything was complete to make sure I was happy with the new system! I would highly recommend giving TJ a call for any and all of your HVAC needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
