The Job consisted of quite a bit of Fascia repair that was spread out in different areas due to termite damage and wood rot, plus a second story railing and deck that required the frame be replaced completely. Gabriel and his crew handled the project professionally providing a fast job with great quality. I would highly recommend Gabriel for a wood replacement project.

David is an very skilled, experienced, reliable contractor. We remodeled our home including a kitchen, adding a bathroom and bedroom. He's very good with plumbing, concrete, framing, dry wall, texturing and electrical. Very hard working, creative and practical in his approach to any construction challenges. We were very happy with the initial remodel, so we contracted with him to do our 3,100 sf re-roof and add a 15 solar module installation. He handled all building permits, code requirements, inspections.

Dan is fun to work with. Very flexible. If you have an idea that was not part of the plan, but he can see that it would enhance the project, he goes for it. He is cheerful, and fastidious. An excellent craftsman. He built me a magical loft that is so sturdy an elephant could dance up there and no one would know it. He had to build a door just for the space, and came up with a beautiful walnut hobbit door. Then went searching out lumber mills to find just the right piece of oak for the kitchen counter. It was fun to create with Dan.

Casey and his crew built two decks for us. We are very happy with the work they did. Everything turned out beautifully and had great attitudes. They cleaned up everything after the job was done and made sure we were happy with the work they had done. Definitely be using them again on future projects. Thanks for everything.

Thumbtack sent me several referrals for carpentry work I need on my roof and porch. I selected AJ Houston Construction and am completely satisfied with the friendly and professional work completed by this company. AJ responded almost immediately. He and his worker were professional, clean, and efficient. They brought their own equipment, ladder and tools went right to work, completed the project and even painted the wood work perfectly. They tidied up everything and the cost of the project was a real bargain. I would definitely hire AJ again and highly recommend this business to my friends and family.

While the project has not actually begun, Mr. Varnum produced the most complete and transparent project cost breakdown out of any applicant and was selected as the General Contractor for this project based on that finding. He has already been commended for his diligence in that area by our General Accountant.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

      Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
