Ian H. says, "Right off the bat, I'd like to say that our experience and quality was excellent. We moved to the desert about 18 months ago and the pool in our new house had some issues. The glass block of the spa dam was cracked, tile was falling off and the heater stopped working a few months after we moved in, There were also spider cracking and dark spots on our plaster. This month, I decided that it was finally time to address the pool issues. I contacted 4 pool companies, one did not return my call, another took over a month to get back to me with quotes. Handel Caballero, the owner of Handel's pool service, who I found through Thumbtack got back to me within hours. He came over the same day and by that evening I had a quote. No chasing or follow-up required on my part. Based on feedback from several sources, I decided that it was time bite the bullet to resurface the 17 year old plaster of the pool. Handel was extremely accommodating and took me around to see several pools that he had renovated. It was all beautiful work. He asked me to go on a web site and choose tiles and he would bring me the samples, also pretty fantastic because I didn't have to schlep out to the showroom. I was also able to put the tile samples in the water to get a better idea of how they would look. Amongst the tile samples that Handel brought was one I did not choose. It was a natural stone mosaic. I would have never even considered it had it not brought it over. I give him credit because he has extremely good taste, plus it was within the budget I had set. In the end, it's the tile we chose. He also brought me samples of the pebble finish so I could see them in the water. Here's the extraordinary timeline for how the project unfolded: Sunday - I decided to hire Handel's Pool Service Monday- Men showed up to drain the pool. Tuesday - A crew arrived to demolish the existing plaster, tile and spa dam and build a new dam. Wednesday - Tiling completed. Autofill I decided to add installed. Start installing the new heater. Thursday - Pebble finish the surface of the pool. Finish heater install. Start installation of the new electronic control panel and new lights. Friday - Acid wash the pool. Finish electronic panel install. Fill the pool Saturday - Renovation completed. I am thrilled with the work, the attentiveness and quality. I have also decided to hire Handel's pool service to do our regular pool maintenance. All in all a fantastic experience. Handel never steered me wrong and I have no qualms at all in recommending him."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does demolition cost?

Demolition services cost $800, on average, with a cost range between $644 and $1,000. Demolishing your kitchen or bathroom may cost around $1,000 or more, depending on its size and the amount of work involved. However, demolishing a house can cost up to $30,000 (or more).

Contacting contractors is the best way to find out how much demolitions services cost in your area. That's because there are several factors that play into the total cost. The first is the size of your house, property or structure. Smaller homes that can be demolished with a single excavator will cost less than larger homes that may require more equipment and personnel, as well as more waste disposal fees. Also, labor rates will vary depending on your region.

How much does it cost to demolish and clear a house?

On average, it costs between $3,000 and $35,000 to demolish an entire house. Demolition also involves a number of factors that will influence the cost. House demolition pros will factor in the location of the demolition site, as well as whether they’re partially or completely tearing down the structure. They will also charge for outbuildings that need to be demolished, as well as dump fees for disposing of the waste.

How hard is demolition work?

If you’re not a professional, demolition work can be difficult, taxing and strenuous — not to mention dangerous, particularly when extensive precautions aren’t taken.

Demolition involves an understanding of structures and how buildings are built. This allows workers to understand the potential consequences of tampering with or removing things like walls, beams and other structures. Demolition also involves the use of heavy equipment like excavators. Dangers include falling debris, explosions, dust and other risks like collapsing ceilings and floors.

Who do I hire to get my home or property demolished?

If you choose to have your house torn down by machinery, you will need to hire a demolition contractor or company. These jobs require the use of heavy machinery like excavators, wrecking balls, bulldozers and more. The waste will then be scooped up and placed in dumpsters, which are hauled away by trucks. Another type of demolition is done by hand, and this service can leave you with salvageable parts to reuse in another home.

Search for demolition professionals on Thumbtack, and make your decision based on their customer ratings, reviews, project photos and cost estimates.

How long does it take to tear down a house?

This depends mostly on the size of the house and the complexity of operating on the worksite. Generally, you can expect a house teardown to take between one and several days. When you’re discussing your demolition project with potential local contractors, also ask them how long the project will take.

What's the difference between demolition and excavation?

Demolition is the act of tearing down a structure, like a house or building. It has its own name because the process itself is a skilled trade. Demolition crews must know how to safely and effectively bulldoze or tear a house down, how to handle different materials and occasionally even how to salvage certain materials from the house.

Excavation is the use of excavators to perform manual work like digging, trenching and tunneling. It also often involves surviving the ground, removing topsoil and clearing rocky surfaces.
