Arya is a master counselor and life coach. He brings a potent combination of skills into his work: a sincere heart, a highly intelligent mind, and a wealth of professional training and experience. Every session feels expertly held in a professional yet humane container; the real issues are addressed, directly and sometimes sternly, but always with an authentic kindness and care. Arya has helped me to: -cut through my insecurities and obstacles around my artwork -focus in on and take more action with my career in more ambitious and visionary ways -navigate very old and difficult patterns with my family -recognize and begin to authentically relate to things I was avoiding about myself/my life in a way that has led to way more relief, freedom and positive action -and just more generally, being someone in my life I can trust to help me through the ups and downs of being a human I'll share one more thing: though I didn't experience this directly, my dear friends went to Arya for couples coaching/relationship counseling. They said they received incredible benefit from their work with Arya, and that if not for his intervention, they don't know if they would have made it. They spoke about his acute attention to detail, especially in tracking the subtle habitual ways that they would shut down or leave their hearts, while giving them practicable alternatives to create the kind of connected, intimate, and fulfilling relationship they were longing for but couldn't find. There's a reason (many reasons) why Arya is at the top of this yelp list. He is absolutely worth it!

An unexpected death in the family upended a number of things in my life. I needed some guidance to get back on track to run my business and tackle the new personal challenges I was facing. I was working with another counselor for a few months but did not find much value in my sessions. My wife found Karim so I decided to try one session. Needless to say, I really enjoyed Karim's approach. Karim has acted like a guide to help me identify, process and work on my challenges. I enjoyed his help so much that I also paid to attend a couple of the workshops he hosts outside of regular hours from time to time. I highly recommend talking to Karim at least once and see how you feel. Chances are, you will want to work with him.

When I started working with Shannon I was struggling with deep unhappiness and uncertainty about my life, as well as my relationships with the people in my life. I was skeptical of talking to anyone because of several prior bad experiences with counselors and psychiatrists. But I called anyway out of desperation and I'm very glad in retrospect that I did. Shannon helped me consciously identify things that are important to me and things I wanted to change. With Shannon I learned to proactively become aware of and eliminate negative, harmful, or just plain not useful patterns of thinking and instead treat myself using positive reinforcement. These changes seems small and simple but their impact is deep. I also benefited from her wise perspective on managing relationships with others. By using what I've worked on with Shannon, I feel more clear, capable, reflective, and self-aware. This in turn has helped me focus, enjoy my work, and improve how I view my relationships with my family and coworkers. I'm all around much happier and proud of myself. In working with Shannon, I was impressed by her kindness, her breadth of understanding, her proactive approach, and her focus on ensuring her clients improve in a quantifiable, verifiable way. I would and do recommend her to anyone looking for guidance through rough times, especially if you're looking for quick and concrete practices to implement to improve your life immediately.

I was intrigued by Dan's profile. After a conversation, I knew this was the guy to help me. First, he doesn't want to keep you sick like most counselors do. That was refreshing. Second, I received everything I needed in 3 sessions. Well worth the money. Thanks Spiritual Attorney! You really know your stuff. Recommend without reservations.

I met Judy 19 years ago attending an intensive for Hand Analysis. Of all the people in our group Judy displayed the characteristics of a reader I would go to...kindness, humbleness, intuitiveness, and highly intelligent. It is no surprise that she has continued to share her gifts of reading hands and teaching it to others. If you want an in-depth analysis of your delicious dilemma (what you keep stubbing your toes on), Judy will lead you to a better understanding of the contrast's that create those same scenarios. I highly recommend Judy even if you have no dilemmas in your life. You may walk away discovering gifts you did know you possessed! Bonnie

I hope that you know how valuable the work is that you have done at Options this last year... And you were one of the best therapists that I have seen in the five and a half years that I have been there. What I saw was an empathetic connection between you and your clients that seemed to have a healing effect. In addition, I got good feedback from the clients themselves. You were also a valuable sounding board for therapeutic challenges individual clients were facing. I appreciate you. Gary Anderson, AOD Counselor, Options Recovery Service

Matthew has been a really great counselor to work with. He brings empathy and excitement to our relationship counseling sessions, and provides much needed insight to moments when we get caught up in our historic relational patterns. Our sessions are a good mix of hard work and play. Matthew always has ideas and exercises we can do to work with the material that arises. He is communicative and professional.

Mica worked with me when I was unsure and not able to see my way out of a tough situation. During our sessions, she brought compassion and clarity to my situation. With her help, I was able to work through my difficulties. She is a think outside of the box counselor who brought it many different kinds of resources to help me create a new strategy to move forward and leave a lot of self doubt behind.

After meeting Rev Gil and Robyn about 10 years ago, I had an intuitive knowing that Rev. Gil was to be my practitioner (spiritual counselor) and began working with him shortly thereafter. It was my first experience of working with a practitioner and, ultimately, the process was a significant contributor in my desire to pursue my own practitioner license. I found Rev. Gil to be an exceptional practitioner. He consistently acknowledged my process and journey while staying anchored in spiritual principle so I could create the shifts I was seeking. He also never hesitated to call me on my stuff, always from a place of love, so I could see how being stuck in my story was not serving me. Overall, I found the process of working with him in this way to be incredibly transformative and fundamental to my subsequent spiritual journey, so much so that I enrolled in the spiritual counselor training program myself the following fall. I worked with both Rev Gil and Robyn during my training and found them both to be wonderful mentors as I continued to explore my spiritual path. I can't recommend their work strongly enough!

Alison is amazing! The most important things I look for in a counselor is someone who is well educated, practices what they teach and is compassionate with their clients. Alison is all of the above, she really knows her stuff, I feel safe and well attended to when she works with me and she gives me undivided attention which I always appreciate. She has an amazing way of working on emotional issues that could be holding you back from making progress in your life. She has a deep understanding of what it takes to heal and clear old material that is no longer relevant to living your best life and she guides you in a way that is kind, loving and safe. I honor her so much and feel so grateful to have her in my life!

    About

Eager Worker - Whenever I enter the work field and prepare for the day, I am always in an upbeat mood to get whatever needs to be done. I noticed a lot of workplaces want fast pace, but even the worker's aren't even pacing themselves to a speed I would consider fast. So, I keep it upbeat and strive to get things done. Able to Be on Task - When on task, I fit the situation toward my work habits such as being neat, clean, organized, with flow of charisma, and punctual, and these are just some of the ethics I am portraying. You may not see other workers putting effort into promoting these kinds of ethics, but if want to see the skill I provide, analyzing other employees or employers will show you the difference I can make. Acceptance to Strive - The question that can hold you back when working is, "What drives you to work?" My answer is simple: the acceptance to strive. How can you work without a motivation to push you beyond limits? How can you become determined to stay committed to a job without being proud of what you've done? When i accept to strive, I accept to work. Communication's Negotiator - When I work, I have this helping habit. What I do is I ask them if I can help them. Some say no and some say yes, but what I want to establish with this is that when I communicate and negotiate, I do it all in a helping manner, so that anyone would come out happy. Currency Distributor - Distributing currency, I have the ability to process currency through objective. With this particular skill, what I do is I carefully place currency into whatever machine is used to distribute. Credit Saver - When it comes to credit, we all know how essential it can be, and saving these essentials causes some great production. Creditm when used potentiallym can result in a change toward success, which is something we should all want. Multitasking Initiator - Initiate on a task and multiple tasks is something I acquired through my years of academics, sports, and religious beliefs. I am a Buddhist, but I acknowledge all sorts of religions. Interactive Discusser - I love to have discussion, and I think this is one of my strong points when on the floor of the work field. Although discussions sometimes can lead off topic or get carried away, I will always love to discuss and at the same time interact. Counselor for Answers - Well, when times get rough and support is available to heal, I guide them through phases of healing. We have so many people not knowing answers to questions they have for the world. Well, as a counselor, you guide them to find the answer, just like counselors who have guided us before. Service of Profit - With this meaning, the service you provide will benefit both parties. Together, the efforts will begin to grow into a way of success, which will reach beyond.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

    • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
    • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
    • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
    • Overcoming addictions.
    • Managing chronic illness.
    • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

    • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
    • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
    • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
    • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
    • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
    • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
    • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
    • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
    • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
    • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
    • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
    • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
    • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
    • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
    • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
    • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
    • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
    • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
    • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

    How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
