I hired Larro's Moving Services for a local move in SF. I can not say enough about how great the guys that came were. I used a crew of 3 men who were kind, helpful, careful and quick. They had a difficult task because my move involved several flights of stairs but they had a great attitude and were very careful with my delicate items. They came with everything that was needed - garment boxes, moving blankets, a truck, etc. The service provided was well worth the cost and I'd definitely use them again or recommend them for someone moving locally.

I have been really remiss in writing this review, but didn't want to wait any longer. Santos and his team are awesome! I did a local move from Palo Alto to Scotts Valley in October. 4 bedroom house and all the fixins. Santos and his team showed up and packed the entire house in one day and then moved me the next day. They were on time, super polite, very conscientious about my stuff, and seriously worked harder than any mover I've previously worked with. These guys barely stop to breathe. My new house is up a super steep hill and these guys handled it like pros. This was no easy task- when I say up a hill- I mean UP a hill. They were able to add staffing on the move day because I had more stuff than was anticipated. They not only did that but were able to add another truck with no hassle. This was the absolute best money I spent in this whole experience and I would call these guys again in a heartbeat. Super great experience!!!

I hired these guys for a local moving from Sunnyvale to San Francisco. They showed up about on time and did the job pretty efficient. They are friendly, too. But my floor mirror is broken during the move (although Edgar told me it's the first thing broke on him in the past 4 years. I guess it's just my luck?). It could have been 5 stars if nothing was broken.

We had to make a local move (~15 miles). Scott & team made the actual moving part by far the easiest part of our move. They supplied clean, good-condition recycled boxes weeks in advance so we could get a jump on packing. They came with their own blankets and wardrobe boxes and worked really fast. Communication was fantastic. Scott was always responsive when I called with questions, and when an unexpected construction surprise delayed our move for a week, he graciously fit us into his schedule. I hope we never have to move again, but if we do, we will call Scott & team!

We used Smart Move to move from the Bay Area to Sacramento and couldn't be more pleased with our experience. When they arrived (on time, I might add) we were given an estimate as to how many hours the job would take and they finished 1/2 hour earlier than anticipated. We had also packed our personal vehicles full of the more fragile items we owned, and they offered to help unload those items with the extra time remaining on the hour they were working. We had three movers- Johnny, Sergei and Mike. They all had great attitudes, followed our requests for loading certain items, handled our belongings with care, and were very efficient. Not one thing was broken or mishandled. We had each box labeled with colored tags for the rooms at our new place and they put all the boxes in the correct rooms, which made unpacking so much easier. They reassembled some of our furniture and placed the furniture where it belonged so that we wouldn't have to rearrange it later. We are so thankful to this crew for making this move the most efficient and smooth one we've had! This moving company was worth every penny and there was an hourly discount for paying in cash. Thank you Johnny, Sergei and Mike !

I have all great things to say about Drew, Jimmy and Lewis. They were scheduled to move me at 1:00pm but they called me at 11:30am to see if they could come earlier. Yippee!!! I was thrilled. The guys were great. They were careful with my belongings... I didn't have any precious antiques or anything but i appreciate how careful they were. Jimmy took my bed apart and wrapped it in plastic in a matter of minutes. The truck was loaded in record time. We arrived at my new address and the unloading was quick and professional. I am still unpacking and my belongings arrived intact with no damages. The cost was fair and affordable. I'm telling all my friends about this company if you must choose a moving company please choose MOVING HELP BAY AREA.

This is a review of my first experience with this company that took place a few months ago (09/06/2016). I was scheduled on a Wednesday at 10AM. Before any moving had been done I was already very pleased with the way they handled their business. Even though I contacted them last minute and needed their services ASAP they were extremely accommodating and found a date/time that worked best for me. My two movers, Sergey and Bogdan, gave me a heads up phone call to let me know they were on the way. They arrived right on time about 15 minutes later. I needed to move out all my belongings in my bedroom and a few pieces of furniture (bedset: queen mattress, bedframe, nightstand, computer desk, dresser) out of the bedroom right next to mine. Both rooms were at the top floor of a 3-story townhouse, and the only way to move my belongings into the truck was through 4 sets of stairs (that were super small, narrow and difficult to work with). They started on the empty room with the furniture first because I actually wasn't even fully done packing my room yet. My boyfriend supervised and said that they carefully wrapped everything and used a lot of bubble wrap and shrink film to make sure everything was very protected. My room was a more complicated because I still had random items and clothing articles scattered around, but Sergey and Bogdan did not mind at all and packed literally EVERYTHING without a single question. I can't imagine how difficult it was for them to get my ridiculously furniture down those stairs (I already get tired just carrying my laundry from the garage). After everything was packed up in their truck, they headed to my new destination. They arrived around the same time I did so I could tell they didn't try to delay their drive time. Sergey and Bogdan immediately began unloading everything into my new apartment. Whenever they did ask me questions, it was about how or where I preferred certain items to go. I was so surprised when they told me they had finished because they worked so fast and quietly. They were very kind and gave me a discount on top of the first discount they had given me already. Overall, their staff were friendly, very professional and polite and they work exceedingly well. In the future I will ONLY use Silicon Valley Luxury Moving for all my moving needs!!

Do not hesitate to call G B Construction for gutter cleaning and replacement and leaf guards. They are prompt, quick, thorough, friendly and professional. Their charges are reasonable, and they do not upsell. I understand that they also do tile and wood floors, painting and household moving. I will be using them again and again.

Nicolas was easy to work with, was not only on time, and was friendly. He and his other mover did a great job picking up furniture for me in another city, then brought it to me. They also helped me move furniture around after just moving in a week ago. I would definitely use them again.

The team at Wally's was very responsive (jumped on my job with less than 6hrs notice) and tactical about moving my apartment. They took the time to wrap, and protect, all of my belongings before moving them and came well prepared with extra boxes/blankets. Amazing experience. Would use again and am referring friends! Note, they do have a minimum charge.

They were great! No banging of furniture on walls. Moved things very carefully and went above and beyond for me. Only suggestion I have us is carry tools and useful resources you may need during a move. Otherwise, job well done!

We called Clutter to help us move between apartments. The set up process was seamless and the person on the other end was great and funny. On moving day Alex S, Alex P and Darnell W came in on time, were extremely efficient and were fun to talk to. We were done in 4 hours! Alex being a magician with the ikea set up helped a ton too! They were great at navigating the tricky corners and didn't miss a beat even in the 90 plus heat. We loved the experience with clutter and we will definitely call on them again! Way better than all the last movers combined!

Paul and Katelyn managed all of our requirements with timely responses and quality service, at a price far better than the other quotes we received. They even dealt with an unexpected snowstorm without missing their delivery time. We would highly recommend Paul and his company for any long distance move.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
