Amin was great. Although we did not get the fence yet but he did our laundry room fixing and went an extra mile to accommodate our needs. He is friendly and polite. He also fixed our drawer as if we were his family. I am glad that I have found a handyman for my family. Will definitely hire him again. :)

Ron installed a new cedar fence and gate section for my elderly mom. It was perfect. It's really easy to open and close which was important for my mom. It couldn't have been easier. He bought the materials and installed it and now she has a nice new gate and fence. Highly recommend! He showed up on time and always answered my texts promptly. His price was really reasonable too!

If you need someone to build your gazebo, Roger is your guy. I bought a gazebo from Amazon and due to the size (11’x14’), it recommended having at least 2 people install it. Boy, were they wrong. Roger built my gazebo all by himself and in 3 hours! He even gave me instructions on how to fix and maintain it after he was all done. He also promised that his work is 100% guaranteed and that I can contact him any time if I have any issues. Roger even offered the lowest bid and he doesn’t do this to make money. I feel like he enjoys doing this so making money is secondary. If he ever makes a proposal to your project, you HAVE to hire him. Thanks again Roger!

James did a great job on making my fence/gate look new again. There were many areas that we didn't find out needed fixing until the project started but nonetheless he did a good job. Very helpful and nice.

Highly recommended! We hired Robin to build a fence and some gates for us. In addition to doing an excellent job on the initial project we ended us using him for a 5 other smaller jobs. Two of those included kitchen appliance re-installations that were extremely difficult because they had previously not been repaired or installed correctly by others. Really, this guy can fix anything! He also fixed a broken front door jam that that others said could not be repaired and must be replaced, saving us a couple thousand for a new front door. We would absolutely use him again in the future. Thanks Robin :)

Vahe was wonderful from start to finish, and only a few days after the fact, our lives are already considerably improved by the work he did (a massive and somewhat involved furniture-building project).

I had a Section of Chain Link Fence 12 feet long. 4 feet tall that was Added to an existing Chain Link Fence already on my home property. That 12 foot Section was always missing due to trees & brush. Once the trees & brush were removed I put a request on thumbtack for that 12 foot Section to be replaced. Initially, no Company Showed interest in this project And I had to repost it twice. Finally Alfred Salas welding company accepted the project with a very reasonable quote. They came out with the materials and did an outstanding Job with the 12 foot Section of Chain Link Fence. Alfred specializes In Cast-Iron Driveway Gates fixing, Mending and Welding those kinds of Gates mainly. Yet, is also able to handle different materials besides Cast Iron..in this case Chain Link. It extremely difficult to find someone to mend, fix or replace chain link fencing because it is Usually the extremely unreasonably priced Chain Link Fence Companies who want to Corner the market on projects like this..but be careful If you hire a Chain Link Company it will be extremely costly for even a small section of chain link. Alfred Salas was able to keep the cost of material and labor within my budget and I very much appreciate the quality of work done for the budget that I had. Thanks Alfred a job well done!!

Jerry painted a 50" wood fence and 6" gate for us. He provided turnkey service, including a day of priming, color-matching and procuring the paint, and doing two days of painting. He was punctual and courteous throughout and the fence looks great. I'll definitely hire Jerry again if needs come up.

All City Builders and I agreed on a price for the fence project, the staff arrived at my home on the scheduled date and began the removal of the old fence and material. They immediately started the installation which was professional with the complete process completed in two days. My neighbor who shares the fence due to property boundaries was impressed and while the workers were on site, they negotiated with them to complete some additional work on their property. The overall result looks good and enhances the curb appeal of my home.

I had Jonathan install a window awning for me. The process took just a bit over an hour and the installation was good quality. It would have been nice if the awning was 1-2 inches higher, but because I have some obstructions, it was just not possible; out of his control.

Edgar Villanueva worked on an assortment of home and yard renovations for me as I prepared my home as a rental, which included painting, cabinet installation, decorative moulding, mold, gas furnace removal, door alignment, gardening, fence realignment, demolition, and hauling. Edgar was excellent to work with in every way. His work ethic is Impeccable. His is an honest, straightforward and trustworthy person and a surprisingly calming presence throughout the process. Edgar is bi-lingual, well-spoken, and extremely diligent in every step of the journey. His prices are competitive, but extremely fair! I offer my highest recommend for Edgar Villanueva and his team of workers. You will be extremely happy that you chose him to service your home improvement requirements.

I have worked with Nick for over a two decades now. He has done numerous repair jobs and/or remodels for me on my homes as well as worked on a few rental properties I own. Everything from a roof repair, plumbing leaks/new plumbing, tile work, a new fence, Jacuzzi installations to full bathroom & kitchen remodels. He's always shown up on time when he said he'd be here and has completed the projects in the amount of time he estimated. His pricing has always been fair and the quality of work has always been exceptional. He cleans up after himself when he's done and makes sure that you're happy with everything before signing off on the work. He's a great guy to work with and has great sens of humor. With all the bad stuff you hear about construction people and contractors out there, he's a breath of fresh air. I've done everything from full new construction work to minor repairs and he's always the guy I call first. I'd recommend him to anyone looking for someone that they can count on the give you a good deal and get the job done without any headaches. Ken aka Monty

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
