we wanted to have a dining room set built out of reclaimed wood. i sent tim a photo of the table and chairs that we liked. we were blown away by the result. he is truly an artist and brilliant with wood. i would gladly call him for any woodworking project that we need. his work exceeded our expectations and his prices are quite reasonable. highly recommend tim for anyone who has their own design in mind or to look at his book of work done for great ideas. thanks tim!

Our residential interior design firm has used Tom on several projects in Hidden Hills and Encino. The outcome has always been to our satisfaction. He built a custom kitchen island for us, custom built ins with floating shelves for a family room, built in cubbies for a playroom, a buffet built in for a dining room, and an amazing custom bookcase for a double story circular entry. He is a craftsman, problem solver and delivers in a timely manner. Unfortunately he does not do his own finishes. He does however have finishers he recommends and coordinates with.

Ryan is a perfectionist. When it came to the designing of my custom entertainment center, I told him what I wanted and heade sure that it wasn't anything short of stellar. He takes his woodworking very seriously and you could see it in the quality of his work. I have no doubt that this entertainment center will stand the test of time and look good for many years to come. Highly recommend Ryan for any woodworking project.

We have worked with Craftsman extensively. Micah has built a custom wall unit/bookshelf, several closets with shelving, cut out an exterior door to our garage, custom floating shelves, a ship lap wall and so many other things. He is really a master woodworker with a great attention to detail. For each project, he thoroughly stepped through the plans so we knew what was happening. He gave us accurate estimates of both time and cost. Micah is also very courteous and kind. He’s a pleasure to have in the house and really thoughtful about being in your space. We are eager for more projects so we can see Micah again soon!

Dan and Brian made me a custom bookcase headboard. The craftsmanship was excellent and showed a lot of pride in their work. Before we started the project they gave me a detailed drawing and price. The headboard was ready as promised and everything about it is just gorgeous! I wouldn't hesitate to do business with them again.

Kent Fletcher, the No Regrets Handyman, arrives on time, takes pride in his work, is reasonably priced for services rendered, doesn't leave a mess, dependable, and is just a nice guy. You will not have any regrets if you hire him. He's built a fence and gate for me, cleaned out and repaired leaky rain gutters, repaired broken woodwork, and painted.

He installed my beautiful wood cabinets and made corrections to the mistakes in measurements that the original contractor made. I felt relieved that I could rely on him to handle the whole process for me since I was too busy with work to handle the details. He also built my gorgeous wood railing (custom colors that he helped me pick to match my taste) and stairs, plus a shelf in my bedroom above the computer desk. All lovely additions to my new home!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
