Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

What should I ask a house cleaner or maid before hiring them?

There are many questions to ask a cleaning service before you hire them to make sure they’re the right fit. These questions might include:

  • How much do you charge?
  • How do you set your prices -- per hour or per square foot? Or, do you charge a flat rate?
  • What is your past work experience? Can I see a list of references?
  • Are you accustomed to working with different home or apartment types and sizes?
  • Can you work with children or pets in the house?
  • What types of cleaning products do you use?
  • Do you bring your own cleaning supplies and products?
  • How often can you clean my home?
  • Is there anything you recommend I do (or don't do) to my home before you arrive?

What is included in a deep house cleaning vs. a basic house cleaning?

A basic house cleaning typically includes tasks like carpet cleaning, wiping countertops, taking out the trash, doing the laundry and washing dishes. A deep house cleaning is a much more involved process, where all aspects of the home are given full attention for a cleanout. In a deep house cleaning, the cleaners will wet-wipe everything from door frames to light switch plates, making sure to also clean walls, windows, air vents, ceiling fans, furniture and more.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

How long does it take to clean a house professionally?

Generally, getting your house cleaned professionally can take several hours. The time it takes for house cleaners to complete their job depends on the size of your home, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have, the type of service you require and the condition of your house. It also might depend on how many employees are cleaning and the supplies they are using. If you get recurring cleaning services, the first visit might take a bit longer than the subsequent visits.

When choosing the best house cleaner for you, ask for an estimate about how long their services will take.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How do I choose the best house cleaning service?

When searching for the best house cleaning service near you, consider the depth of your cleaning needs, your budget and the size and condition of your home. Read reviews from verified customers of any cleaning service that you’re looking to hire. Also, check out the reviewers’ photos and do background checks on reviewers to ensure they’re not employed by established cleaning firms or maid agencies.

When viewing house cleaners on Thumbtack, you might see a Top Pro badge. This indicates that the service is one of the most popular and highly-rated professionals using the platform.

How do I prepare for a house cleaner?

There are several things you can do in preparation for a house cleaning to improve the efficiency and quality of the job. If you’re unfamiliar with a cleaning service, hiding and locking away any obvious valuables lying around can offer great peace of mind.

Depending on the preference of the cleaner, you may need to lock up your pets before the cleaners arrive. Washing dishes and decluttering the house allows a house cleaner to do their job more effectively. And leaving special notes for the cleaners about certain areas in your home that need attention is also helpful.

Ask house cleaners near you about their tips to help you prepare for their services.

How much should you tip maids or cleaning services?

Tipping between 15 and 20 percent is considered an appropriate tip for maids and house cleaners — just as it would with a barber, food delivery driver or taxi operator. During the holidays, you might want to consider tipping a bit more.

It’s important to note that some housekeeping and maid services might include a tip within the service fee, which should be explained to you in the service contract. Talk to house cleaners in your area to find out what's included in their fees.

Gonzalez house cleaning did an excellent job. I live in a back house and just got behind on cleaning. I opted for a deep clean along with oven and window cleaning. Two ladies showed up knocked it our of the park. Everything looks so good! My oven and stove look brand new. They moved both my fridge and stove and cleaned underneath as well. Would definitely recommend and will use then again.

Baire's Cleaning service overall was decent. The ladies were both very nice but the cleaning we received was average and that may be because it was a rushed job as they were over 1.5 hours late. I was still surprised though that the cleaning service took less than an hour. Sure it could be efficiency but upon closer inspection, it was definitely rushed because there were areas of our house that were overlooked/neglected. For example, we had discussed areas that we specifically wanted cleaning prior to them starting like our blinds and staircases that we noticed were not cleaned when we did our final check-up. They did eventually wipe down some, not all, of our blinds when we had pointed it out. They seemed to be in a rush so we parted ways but after they left, it was evident that the cleaning was a basic one as furniture was not moved as it was still dusty under tables and chairs, shelves were dusty, desks and tabletops not wiped down, etc. We try to keep our house as tidy as possible so the cleaners have easier access but not sure if that did much. Overall, this service was a very basic cleaning and if you're looking for more of a detailed deep cleaning, this service may not be enough.

What I paid for: I scheduled a deep cleaning service. I was told this would be 2/3 hours (so I could make arrangements for my dogs who are less than friendly to strangers), this service included a deep clean of my fridge and oven. One would also expect windows and blinds to be included in a deep cleaning service but no. What I got: The cleaners were nearly an hour late with only 45 minutes notice. They cleaned for less than two hours and didn't deep clean a thing. They didn't touch my fridge or my oven, they left smudges all over my walls, my windows weren't touched at all, there dog fur and trash on the floor still and it didn't look like my bathtub had been cleaned very well but more 'wiped down'. They left my belongings on the floor rather than putting them back where they found them. I actually came home and cleaned up after the cleaning service. We immediately complained and sent pictures to the owner who said she would come back but that's an ordeal for the dogs and having to get them out of the house for several hours for her to fix a problem she created so we asked for a 50% refund for the deep cleaning service figuring we got a ‘standard’ cleaning (that isn’t clean…) Does any of this look like it had been 'deep cleaned' only hours before to you? *would not recommend*

Gabby sent Letty whose worked a couple times for us this past two months. She's been reliable and goes above whats asked to ensure all areas of the house are cleaned. We are so grateful to work with their team as we prepare to open Littlejackscorner. org our Reggio Emilia Inspired Family Day Care Half Day program. We really need help to ensure all areas are thoroughly cleaned in preparation for the children enrolling in addition to having a 2 and half year old.

I have been ill for the last 6 months and honestly I had really let things really go. She came in and when she was done the house was sparkling. Now I can go off to the hospital knowing I'll return to a clean, fresh home. On top of that her price was very fair. Can't recommend Rachel enough.

Dori and William were amazing! They showed up and both were sweet as can be, and they got started immediately. They brought all their own supplies, and they left my house looking absolutely pristine and beautiful! Not only were they a pleasure to have (and my dog loved them too!), but they both were so extremely thorough and detail-oriented, it put me at total ease, knowing they weren’t overlooking anything. I can be pretty OCD about things, and I already keep my house really tidy and I do the basics, cleaning it myself everyday, but they did things that I always seem to forget about, or never have time for... Like my ceiling fan, and my base boards, my glass shower door, and the exterior of all my cabinets and appliances, as well as cleaned/wiped down all of my furniture (not just the tops/surfaces), and a million other things. And on top of them doing everything I could’ve hoped for- AND MORE!- they also left really thoughtful and sweet touches, like doing special folds with my towels in the bathroom (on the counter as well as on my towel bar) and folded my toilet paper really pretty, and organized things in a different cool way than I ever would have thought to do... things like that, which made me feel like I was at a hotel in my own home, which is a pretty amazing feeling, I have to say! Lastly, they were so incredibly fast too!! They were in and out in about an hour and a half, and they approached everything with such great care as they were cleaning, it made me feel assured that my home and my belongings were in excellent hands. I ABSOLUTELY cannot wait to hire them again!! And if you can grab them when they’re available, DO IT!! You will notttt be disappointed!! I am still floored at how nice my place looks, and as I said, I already keep my place clean, but they really are just miracle-workers! THANK YOU AGAIN GUYS!! 🙏🏻😁🙌🏻

I hate giving bad reviews. But the work was very disappointing. I contacted Carolina with the 10 issues that I had regarding the services rendered and she said that she wanted to make it up to me by giving me a discount on my next cleaning and sending out a different crew. I told her that I wouldn't give a bad review if she would take care of it. I contacted her to make a next appointment and asked about the discount; she said since it has been more than a month she has to come to my house to see what needs to be done before she will tell me how much of a discount I will get. That didn't sit well with me since the job that was done was very very poor and I expected her to be more amenable. 10 major items that didn't get done. Things like not cleaning the microwave, using my vacuum instead of theirs AND not emptying the full canister, incomplete dusting, leaving the living room rug flipped up and dirt on the floor, and more. If she would have been more responsive and more anxious to make up for the problems I wouldn't have given a bad review.
