I've had one lesson with Cindy so far and loved it! She walked me through proper techniques and we did a variety of self-defense training so I was constantly challenged and learning. So great! Martin taught a self-defense class at our office with his colleague, Angelo. The class was informative, fun, and gave us all a basic understanding of some moves we could use if we ever had to defend ourselves. I am a Muay Thai instructor. I also have a black belt in karate, and I took many courses with SWAT units and bodyguard agencies. I am also a marathon runner and a triathlete. I want to see you accomplish more than you can on your own. It is difficult to find the time and motivation, so I will push you to accomplish your goals.
Having lived in Japan for 8 years does not make me a better instructor, in and of itself. Nor does having been a tournament champion. 35+ years doing Karate and several years doing other martial arts helps my level of understanding. Having a deeper technical knowledge than almost anyone else outside of Japan helps as well. But what really sets me apart is the passion that I have, not only for Karate-do as a way of life, but for teaching it in a way that helps students progress as quickly as they are capable of.
I attended Cynthia Jolicoeur’s “Intro to Personal Defense Readiness” course in the Boston area over Labor Day week-end last year (9/4/16). I had no specific expectations other than to learn some new ideas and techniques. (I am a 5th degree black belt in the Ed Parker American Kenpo style, so brought that experience and mindset into the training.) I was quite pleased to receive such a thorough presentation on how the Blauer PDR system differs from martial arts training, along with a wealth of other information that is not typically provided in self-defense training, in particular the psychological and emotional components that accompany the physical aspect. Cynthia was extremely knowledgeable and well-versed in this material and answered most participant questions without referring to notes. The physical component was ably demonstrated by Cynthia and her “bad guy,” Dave Rood. All the participants had multiple opportunities to practice on them and on each other. The outdoor scenarios were excellent and provided realistic “hands on” experience of what to do (or not do) in the event of an unexpected attack. Cynthia’s own black belt karate experience is invaluable for helping participants who come from a martial arts background remember how the PDR system is different. Not that the martial arts experience is wrong, but that there are cases when it’s ineffective and doesn’t really prepare the martial artist mentally to respond appropriately to a sudden, violent attack. I highly recommend Cynthia’s course.

United Studio of Self Defense, Foster City has an ongoing mission: to help the women in our community safeguard themselves against crime and assault, so they may enjoy a long, fulfilled and healthy lives. Our campaign is to help women to be well-informed, prepared with awareness, safety tips and basic defense maneuvers. Self-defense is for young girls, teens and women of all ages. We teach women in the workplace how to defend against using basic in-close kicks and strikes, using everyday keys, tools, writing instruments, self-defense weapons, e.g., kubotans (small metal or wooden stick). We teach to fend off realistic attacks such as two-hand grabs, single-wrist grabs, chokes, bear hugs, hair pulls and knife or club attacks. We work on strength and core training, which includes pad and bag work where women can really display their power and cardio endurance and fight back if they have to. Our program teaches the girls how to empower themselves mentally and physically, to know their surrounding and to prevent becoming a victim of kidnapping, assault, rape or murder. One out of 5 women are attacked in the US, which includes statistics even from our universities. Girls have a higher ratio of kidnappings compared to boys, just as women fall victim compared to men. In the US alone, not including worldwide statistics, 11,766 women were killed through domestic violence and 24 experienced intimate partner violence per minute. Our campaign is to reduce these stats. It's important to safeguard the women of our community, to fight for a safe place to live and work. The women in our program can customize the class schedule and include female family members or friends, a social club or work team. The sessions range from 1 hour to 2 hours and some will sign up for an ongoing program. We are available every day of the week, weekdays, Mondays through Fridays, from 12:00 to 9:00 p.m. and on Saturdays, from 9:00 to 2:00 p.m. and Sundays, from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. Many of the women who complete our training have a great time and learn a lot about themselves and their surroundings, feeling the empowerment from within, feeling fearless to impact their own lives.
