Eli did a great job with a project that was not easy, installing sliders on three large drawers built into the wall. Will definitely call him again the next time I need a handyman.

First of all I was surprised at how quickly Jared responded to my inquiry. This is my first experience with Thumbtack. My husband and I recently moved and purchased office bookcases, file cabinets, and pantry shelving from Ikea. There were a LOT of boxes. Jared was able to come the next day and begin assembly. It was a big job but he completed it in two days. The end result was absolutely what we wanted, maybe better. Jared was prompt, very responsive and professional. Since that initial job, he's returned for more furniture assembly: shelves and a kitchen island cart. We have more for him to do and in the future I won't be calling anyone else. He's local which is something important to me. We couldn't be more satisfied with the work done in our home. Great job Jared and thanks to Thumbtack.

Job well done. Knows what he is doing. We'd work with appliance installers before who claim to know what they're doing but ends up with a sloppy job and very discourteous. Ronald proved that there are still a few good workers out there who could do a good job and be pleasant. We'll definitely use his services again.

I got my furniture assembled from Mr. Vahe. There was a desk with a bookcase attached, a bed, kitchen cabinet, and an office chair. Assembling all these pieces too quite some time (about 5 hours), but the work was perfect. All the furniture was assembled well and they are sturdy. Although, there was a lot of cardboard pieces and thermocol pieces left behind, there was no screw left loose. Thanks! Would definitely hire him again if needed.

This past May, I contacted Thumbtack in search of a carpenter to downsize a farmhouse table that I bought from Habitat For Humanity for a wonderful $75.00, which was constructed of solid fir wood. Tim Martinez responded to my request, then I explained to him what I needed done to the table. I wanted the table modified in size with a rustic finish. Tim was so excited to do the job and explained to me what the job entailed. He was very knowledgeable in his craft and was excited to do the work, so I hired him. He gave reasonable quote for doing the work and for pick-up and delivery. Upon arrival to my home, he was very cheerful and excited, with portfolio in hand. I saw pictures of his woodwork projects, which were of doors, farmhouse tables, bars, etc. He informed me that it would take appx. 30days to complete the work, which I was fine with. When the table arrived, I was so pleased and it was exactly what I wanted. The table was beautiful! It was downsized to my specifications and the lime wax finish was nice! Then he gave me thorough instructions on how to care for the table. As a person that does many DIY furniture projects, I often call Tim for suggestions to complete the jobs. He's really cool and I will most definitely hire him for future projects.

George was responsive, diligent, paid attention to what I was looking for on the job, and worked with me on price. He put up crown molding, sealed, and painted it. He followed up afterward by filling in any separated joints/seams. He also made some custom kitchen cabinets for me that I was very satisfied with. We discussed the job and he made some good suggestions. He is easy to work with. I don't hesitate to recommend him.

Gary from Hillside Furniture Co recently helped us realize our "dream kitchen" with his expertise and flawless custom cabinetry. The quality of their cabinets, the level of skill and craftsmanship, and their customer care are all top level. We had several custom pieces made to resemble antique furniture that had to look old, but is practical and functional. Hillside Furniture expertly built these pieces to our specifications. Every cabinet fit precisely; everything went smoothly, and Gary is utterly professional, polite and a breeze to work with. We highly recommend Gary and Hillside Furniture to anyone considering high-quality custom cabinetry for their home.

Prior to hiring Kiko to install our Ikea Kitchen, I interviewed him on the phone to see how much he knew about the process. I shared my plans by email and Kiko presented a detailed quote taking into account every detail. I had already spoken to about three other installers, and although he was not the cheapest, hiring Kiko was worth every penny. He is a perfectionist and truely cares about the final product. Among all those I had interviewed, he came out as the one who knew about IKEA Kitchens inside out. Our kitchen was pretty large and had a complex design which required creativity and thinking out of the box. Kiko took his time to work around the details and produced a beautiful kitchen. Kiko and his team assembled and installed all the parts and cabinets within the timeframe specified in the contract and in a 4-day stretch with no interruption. One job at a time. I highly recommend Kiko for your nrzt IKEA kitchen project.

Alfred from Kitchen Cabinets and More was very responsive. He was the first person to get a hold of me and his quote was far less than the other two people who quoted us. His crew was very professional and worked quickly so as not to disrupt the office during work hours. I highly recommend this contractor!

The very best. I was so happy with the service and customer service associate it with 1 OAK Remodeling. We finally had finished our new custom cabinets in the kitchen. The staff answered all of our questions and returned all the phone calls. We had a lot of questions before starting the work. This is the only company that gave me the scope of work. They did a great job explaining what the project needed, what materials, and what the average completion date was. I referred them to my friends and neighbor. Thanks 1 Of A Kind Remodeling

Dan did an outstanding job installing a very difficult arabesque tile. Not only did he have to fix a previous contractors electrical and drywall mess, but he had to remove a wall mounted range hood and reinstall it. Dan carefully laid out all the tiles on the counter before he installed them to make sure that the pattern was perfect. Because the walls were not straight and the kitchen cabinets were not level, this posed an additional challenge. I am completely thrilled with Dans work, professionalism , and fair pricing. I highly recommend him, and will definitely hire him again for this property and others that I own. ( photos coming)

All I want to say is "WOW" Dominic is highly professional, and very talented. For once there is a contractor that does what was promised, on time, and for the agreed refreshing. I had the tired oak kitchen and now I have the modern look of a model home. I was very surprised at how inexpensive it was as compared to replacing the cabinets. I would recommend villa Di Stefano to anyone.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
