Raquel is absolutely amazing! I have two 1-year old female pitbull/labrador mixes that desperately needed training. They knew basic commands such as sit, lie down and shake. However, they never had proper training before. There was constant unruly behavior - jumping on guests and leash pulling among others. Less than an hour into our session, my dogs were listening and staying put - something I could never get them to do. I've had other trainers come by who would sit and go through the animal behavior stuff and as soon as their time was up, they were gone without going through any exercise training. Raquel put in the time and was willing to stay until they got through exercises. I can't thank her enough. My dogs are much more calm now and I was able to bring them to a friend's house without worrying if they'd get into it with the other dogs or people. She's well worth the money!

Karen really understands the mindset and psychology of dogs, which was so helpful for us to understand why our dog was acting the way he was. We really appreciated her explanations of our dog's behavior, like biting, barking and pulling on the leash, so that we could start learning how to better communicate with our dog. We definitely gained insight and tips on how to train our dog from Karen and would recommend her for anyone who needs help understanding their dog's actions. In addition, Karen is extremely dedicated to her work. You can tell through her engaging stories, but also by the fact that she is willing to go above and beyond to help your family.

I had a private training session with Dee Cee, and it was worth every penny! She has a real passion for training dogs and she is very respectful, clear, thorough and effective. My dog Gubi has behavior problems and Dee Cee came up with methods that immediately worked! She also gave me great tools and tips to use in the future. I was so impressed with Gubi's progress in just a day and I feel like I know my dog much better now. Thank you Dee Cee!!

Very knowledgeable on pet behavior. My dog can finally go to dog parks and everywhere else with me. Thank you. I also recommend my cousin to him. His dog was one of the worst behaved dogs that I've seen (80 pound American Pit bull). This dog is like a brand new dog now. Thank you again.

Forever Friends Golden Retriever Rescue has been privileged to have Kim (The Trained Canine) as our Behavior Specialist and Trainer for the past 7 years. She not only trains our dogs but works with the foster parents and new owners. Kim has worked with dogs with simple issues that only need general obedience training and she has worked with dogs with extremely serious problems such as aggression. Our volunteers and adopters call Kim, "The Miracle Worker". Dog after dog that would have been considered "unadoptable" have been able to find their forever homes thanks to Kim's training. As President of the rescue, I sincerely thank Kim and highly recommend her services to anyone that needs a dog trainer.

The Dawson Family loves Love Ur K9! Kevin and his team have done wonders with our dog. Since we've had Love Ur K9 help us train our beagle, our beagle can stay in down position for an hour, walk by our side with her head up on leash, and can control her howling. The best part about Love Ur K9 is that this team heavily involves the owners; they'll teach you about the training they are doing with your dog, so that when your dog comes home, you can continue to improve upon your dog's behavior!

I met DANIELE LARGO outside my bank about a year and a half ago. She had such a beautiful, uplifting energy about her. I thought she was so beautiful and happy, and I just wanted to get to know her. She has such an inviting demeanor; we just started talking. Somehow we ended up talking about dogs. She is a remarkable person and dog whisperer extraordinaire. We have three cute little white rescue dogs and have been putting up with a lot of mischief from them. We'd call one and he/she would turn and walk the other way; plus, two different dogs each thought they were the alpha! We had toileting problems, too much unwanted barking, they were impossible to walk, you get the picture. We love them so much - Jack, J.J. and Kate. We're planning to move sometime soon, and for so long I'd been thinking about what to do about our doggie situation. I knew I needed to do something - SOON. Sweet Daniele had been keeping in touch with me during the gap since meeting, but momentarily I had forgotten about Danielle's special talent. Surprise, she called me the next day! Since we started working with Daniele things have really changed around here. We see the changes as each day goes by. Joe and I have worked with the dogs in all the ways she has taught us and it has really paid off. Yes, people need to get engaged in the learning process along with their pets. We have learned so much about understanding dog behavior, an essential part of having a great relationship with your precious baby. Danielle is so in-tune with our dogs and the ways we all relate together, that she understands what's going on with all of us. They each have different issues and they all love Daniele. They are anxious to please her, and now they focus with us much better also. Each one has really stepped up and they are falling into line as a cohesive family unit. We already have less barking, less toileting problems, less jealousy, and more obedience. Our home is happier and calmer thanks to this special lady. We highly recommend her for anyone having problems with their animals, or, if they just want to have a better trained dog, or other issues. Daniele has also helped our doggies, and Joe and I to better health with the Protandim she carries. What a difference! She has so many great ideas that have helped us accomplish our goals, for our doggies and ourselves. We couldn't be happier that we engaged Daniele to help us. Call Daniele, she's worth more than you can imagine...you won't be sorry! With Gratitude, Carole and Joe Wike

Illuminado trains our puppy with positive reinforcement, and gives us the skills to maintain our puppy's good behavior in our home and in social settings. Our puppy now sits, lies down, stays, comes, and more upon command. This excellent, enjoyable, and effective training has made us--and our puppy--very happy. Thank you Illuminado!!!

So grateful to Leo and his advice/knowledge! He has been tremendously helpful with my dog and helping to work through behavioral problems of my new dog Bebe, who for over a year was in the shelter and before that, she had a lifetime of abuse. He has helped set her (and me) up for success in a life without abuse and only love, but setting structure and discipline to help her feel secure. He truly cares about his clients and their pets, which has been evident in all of our discussions. Leo really does go above and beyond! Can’t wait to work with him more in the future!

We brought our 2 year old Chiweenie rescue, Louie, to Allen because he was exhibiting aggressive behavior to me (Tom) and refusing to go outside with me or into his kennel. Allen patiently trained Louie to teach him the principles of Sit Means Sit and spent extra time working with Louie until he was ready to return to our house. Allen also spent a lot of time explaining Sit Means Sit to us and demonstrating it with his dogs to make us comfortable with the system. He then provided us with a detailed training program and showed us how to implement the training program with Louie. It's only been a few days since Louie has been back, but he is responding to us correctly, going outside and into his kennel for me on command and has not shown any aggressive behavior. We're very happy with the service Allen provided. Tom and Michele Visosky

About

There is no one in this area who comes close to having my level of education or experience. I have a graduate degree that focused on zoology and animal learning, plus numerous training certifications that I maintain by continued practice of current training methods and continuing education. I have worked in a variety of environments including: veterinary clinics, federal government, Colorado and California state governments, behavior department at the University of California, and animal shelters where I worked with thousands of dogs. Since 2005 I have mentored countless dog trainers and offer lectures for dog trainers to earn their continuing education credits. In summary, I teach other teachers. My methods use effective reinforcement techniques, (not archaic punishment techniques from 20-100 years ago) and are in-line with leaders of the field from behavior departments in universities, veterinary behaviorists, applied animal behaviorist, and top-notch humane societies around the nation.

I am an individual looking for a job beside the work that I do. I love animals. I have 3 cats, and it is impossible to keep a dog in my neighborhood. If I could, I would keep a dog or even a bird, so please let me know if there is anything available. Thank you, Fran

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
