Carl lead a 4 week SAT Prep Course for a group of 8-10 low-income youth with our non-profit organization in Santa Monica. Carl was a phenomenal instructor. Carl successfully explained the structure of the SAT, and the strategies necessary to score well. His warmth, humor and high energy kept our youth engaged, and reduced their anxiety about the test. Carl is also highly receptive to feedback, and can teach the course in groups as well. We hope to work with Carl in the future again.

Dan was a life-saver! My son was up against finals in Physics and Math, we found Dan and he was working with my son within 24 hours and explaining concepts that had never been effectively taught.. My son walked into his exams with more confidence and understanding and for that we are very grateful.

We’ve had a great experience with Club Z. I had two international students that were tutored thru them. One 14 year old that needed much help since English isn’t her primary language and an 18 year old preparing for SAT. I would definitely recommend them.

We have used Kris for two of our children and she really helped them both incredibly with getting their math scores way up. We used another tutor initially to help our younger son with the Math 2 subject test and he did well but not perfect, after 2 hours with Kris he got a perfect score on the retake. She just had a way to show him how to take the test. Renee tutored our son for the English and Reading and Essay sections of the ACT and also for the SAT Reading and Essay. He ended up doing much better than we even expected with a perfect score in English on the ACT and a much higher score on the Reading section - she raised his score in reading by 3-4 points. We have recommended Kris to several friends and everyone loves her. Renee worked really well with our son. We highly recommend both Kris and Renee.

I started working with Stable Genius Prep in January to prepare for the General GRE. We assessed right away that the Quantitative material was my weak spot, and where I'd need the most help. I'm the type of person who really has to be able to understand something before I can master it, and I don't naturally think mathematically. In other words I can't just memorize formulae and when to apply them. Andrew was excellent with this. Even when I got answers right, he would make sure to go over with me what the principles were behind the problem. He has clearly had much experience tutoring pupils. Perhaps what had the most impact on me, and on my desire to work hard, was the patience he exhibited; it may have not even registered with him, but I noticed it. In the beginning I worked at an excruciatingly slow pace through everything from Arithmetic to Statistics and Probability. It took two hours just to get through ten problems. By the end of our prep, I was able to work through the same number of questions in about 15-20 minutes, and at a high level of difficulty. While my essay writing is normally solid, it was difficult to exhibit that within the 30 minute time limit. Andrew reviewed my practice essays with me and really helped me to develop strategies to write strong essays that follow the test instructions within the time allotted. Ultimately my Math score went from the 48th percentile up to the 83rd percentile! I couldn't be happier with my experience, and with the results we were able to get. I say "we" because by the end I felt like we were a team, with Andrew as my coach. He is a master of the material, and he understands how to teach it effectively. I definitely recommend Stable Genius Prep to anyone looking not only to get over a certain threshold, but to really maximize their potential and do as well as they possibly can!

Evan has been an amazing tutor for Emily. He taught her tricks and gave her advise for taking both the SAT and ACT exams. He zeroed in on her strenghts and weaknesses and worked with her to perform to her highest potential. He was sensitive to her insecurity going into the exams and showed her how much she really knew and how well prepared she was to perform as she wanted to perform. Emily has has several tutors in her academic career and Evan is the best!!!

    About

For over a decade, I have been helping students achieve SAT scores that allow them to apply to their colleges of choice with confidence through quality one-on-one tutoring. One-on-one SAT tutoring produces the best results, and is far more effective than group classes. Whether the student has taken the test once, or is taking it for the first time, a few one-on-one sessions before the exam can make a big difference. An excellent tutor has far more than just mastery of the test material. They are warm, friendly, patient, and can teach the material in the student's own language so that they learn. Years of tutoring full-time have allowed me to cultivate these good qualities. Many of my test prep clients keep me as a subject tutor long after the test. Thank you for reading my post and I wish you success! Roozbeh

    About

Taking the SAT doesn't have to be an intimidating experience! I've been working as an SAT teacher/tutor for over a year now, and my experiences have taught me many simple and effective strategies for familiarizing students with each section of the test. I can travel to meet clients in the LA area, or tutor online via Skype. I do all sorts of writing and editing: creative fiction, long and short-form non-fiction, articles, and blog posts. I have a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Michigan, where I also studied Philosophy and Art History, and have years of experience developing, writing and proofing essays for style, grammar, and syntax issues.I'm familiar with Chicago, AMA and APA citation styles. I'm available for translation and transcription as well-- I grew up speaking English, Spanish and Italian at home, and studied Latin, so I have a good ear for languages and a good eye for grammar. Other skills: Photoshop Illustrator Word/ Excel

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

    • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
    • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
    • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
    • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
