I have had a few writing projects that I have been putting off for too long. When I first Spoke with Lisa Beth, I explained each one. She helped me organize and prioritize my assignments. She stayed on top of the process, constantly moving each forward, until they were completed. Lisa Beth works long hours making herself available for her clients. She is great at communication, and took time to get to know me and understand my needs. She made the writing process, that seemed daunting to me, easy to achieve.

Carl was hired to teach Hebrew to my daughter who is in Kindergarten as well as to teach my husband and I Hebrew. Carl is a very dedicated professional that has a true gift at teaching. He makes the lessons fun and teaches in a way that keeps the learner engaged the entire lesson and always excited about learning more. This would not normally be an easy task while teaching a 5 year old, however Carl makes it look easy. Our daughter looks forward to Carls's weekly visits, as do we. Carl even went out of his way to find a special Hebrew educational book for my husband (who already speaks pretty decent Hebrew- but wanted to learn more). I would highly recommend Carl for any tutoring, writing, or editing services you may need.

I learned more than writing. Also, I enjoy spending time with Lois because I learn so many things that I never came across before. She makes things understandable and easy to digest. I can see the things we talk about in everyday life and value the things I learn. I get to apply what I learn with Lois since it is very simple to use.

I have been pondering in my ❤ for over twenty years to take a chance with my writing of songs and pomes. When I finally decide to take a chance on my maniusripts, I found the right person for me. I finally decide to take a chance and spend some money. Not so much for speeding the money, it was my pride. If you want something done, then do it. Thankyou Melanie, we need you. Jesus Christ will never let us down.

Guitta is a great writer! She has helped me with a lot of business correspondence, with the grammar and the flow. I have read one of her books and recently retained her to ghostwrite a book for me about my life. She is very, very talented and willing to help.

Skip took on a job that was pretty big and what made matters worse, a person that had just neglected the fundamentals of writing. It's not that I don't know them, I was just too lazy to apply them the way they should be. He reminded me of it. I asked him to be brutally honest and he was. The wonderful thing about him, he later pointed out the good things I was doing right and eventually made my confidence skyrocket. The job your asking me to describe is not only Skip helping me with the book I am working on, but him guiding me and restoring my confidence to get me back in the fight after being knocked down by life, people and dare I say editors and publishers. He made me realize putting forth my best effort in a world that is so competitive is just too important to forget. You ask what went well with Skip? Everything, but what stood out the most was his honesty and clarity of various situations and problems. The quality of his work and guidance is excellent and I couldn't ask for any better advisor. Nothing could improve my experience with him, that's how impressed I am with him. Thanks Skip and I look forward to continuing to work with you. Sincerely, Jeffrey L. Ivory

Good for writing tutoring, I’m an engineer and couldn’t help my son (14) too well with the academic writing so Chris has been really helpful there. He explained it in terms of ‘structure,’ which let me not only understand what was going on, it let me understand it in a way that I could teach. There are a handful of other stories I could tell about how CML brings his material (ha, ‘materials science’!) to life — never again will I think a metaphor is meaningless! — but it makes more sense to just get a lesson with him.

Writing is hard. Period. Always. Never not. But it so much easier with Cynthia on your side. She knows how words work and, more importantly, why scripts don't. If you're having a hard time writing something or anything or nothing, do what I do. Call Cynthia.

Brad prepared a quality resume & cover letter for me. We met at his office and spent close to an hour learning about my sales background and what I wanted to achieve in a job. I even referred a friend who hired him based on my suggestion. Upon my initial resume I never asked for a re-write till now. I wasn't receiving any responses on the positions I applied for. Brad went out of his way to work with me on some re-write adjustments and now I feel 100% more confident. I strongly recommend his services.

Working with Marissa (and Megan too, of course) was an excellent experience. Both of them are very intelligent and helpful in going through the college application process. They're also both relatable and friendly, unlike a number of tutors I've had in the past. I know they offer a variety of services, but I worked with Marissa and Megan primarily on college application essays. They know what colleges are looking for, so they helped me tailor my essays to fit the values and convictions of each institution I applied to. They also gave me a lot of tips for the writing process that I still use today. Just to make things clear... In no way did they write my essays for me. They really help by giving suggestions when it comes to the direction and message of the essays. Each essay I wrote began as my own product and ended as my own product--just more eloquent and finely tuned. Overall, my experience with Marissa and Megan was everything I (and especially my parents) hoped it would be. I definitely think that my one-on-one time spent working with them on my college essays really made a difference in the schools I was accepted to. I'd highly recommend them for anyone looking for help with college apps, tutoring, and much more.

I have worked with Kandice for almost 12 years off and on and each time I look forward to the experience because I learn so much from her. Kandice is an excellent writer and editor, imaginative, creative, on point, is able to grasp even the most complicated narrative and massage it to be perfect. Her extremely wicked sense of humor is so refreshing. She can take the mundane and turn it into a brilliant work of character development and plot line mastery. As a public speaker, prepare to laugh and come away with much more knowledge than you went in there with. An actress, acting teacher, a powerful sense of character development that can bring out the best and worst in people. Dependable, creative, contributory, a leader, funny, team player, and a dear friend of the printed word.

Rand was exceptionally helpful with my son's college application procedure and ultimate school selection. His expertise and guidance made my son's college search experience much less daunting than it could have been. Rand's approach is all encompassing. He is well versed in the entire process, utilizing lots of college app resources, his terrific writing skills and his funny, warm personality. During his junior year, my son (Scott) and Rand worked closely together to develop an entire strategy which included test prep, application paperwork, and a compelling personal story that would be relevant to each of his college choices. Rand's style also helped to increase Scott's confidence, allowing him to understand that he would be fine at any of the schools he chose. This helped make my life easier as well - that first senior semester is extra stressful for everyone (Scott ultimately was accepted at his first choice, but he really believed any of his choices would have been great too). I would highly recommend Rand, and believe his help could benefit other college bound juniors and seniors.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
