Roy was quick to respond to my questions and is very accommodating. He was even willing to lower his usual rate since my move was local. Based on my experience so far, I expect the move to go smoothly.

They were on time, very professional, and made the move extremely easy for me. The cost of the move was very reasonable (they had a higher hourly rate than other bids but they didn’t have any hidden charges). I’d use them again!!

Great Moving company. We had to move from our 4 bedroom house about 4 ioles away. We know it would be a hard move because of the large amount of stuff we have with our 2 boys. Mikhail took the time to come over before the move to meet face to face and get me a estimate of time. I knew we were going to need a lot of help, so we decided on 4 movers. The moving day was stressful, we still had a few boxes that needed to be packed. Mikhail's team helped to carefully pack the remaining items. They also have a ton of moving blankets and boxes, and made sure all the furniture was wrapped before moving. Mikhail also let us keep everything in the truck overnight, so we could finish getting the new house ready with some last minute cleaning. This really helped us a ton. The Globe crew was steady, they did no move so fast that they hit walls or dinged furniture, the moved at a steady pace were they were careful but quick. I highly recommend Globe Moving. They make the move less stressful, they listen, and a very professional.

I've used Cube movers for my past move and was very impressed by the service they provide. My movers were Eugene and Anthony. They have moved my 1 bedroom apartment within their minimum 3 hours. They gave me the rate $85/h for both movers and they came with a big moving van ( it did not fill even half of it ). I've pad the total of $255 for the whole move. Guys were very polite and very careful with my stuff. Movers asked me where I want the bed and my couch to be place and set it up the way I asked them for. I will never move myself again. Highly recommend Cube Moving!

I used Thumbtack to connect with SD Royal Movers. They gave me a flat quote for the 6 furniture items, no extra fees for mileage/fuel. While other companies were requiring a 2-3hr minimum. They were easy to work with from the beginning. On moving day I had Edber and Hector. They were efficient and careful with my items. They were friendly communicators and I appreciated when they would confirm where I liked the furniture placed. I will definitely use their services again.

I had a great experience with Moving Relocation Specialists. Rod was very responsive prior to the job. They also were quite flexible and understanding as I had to change the moving time last minute. They arrived on time, and were prepared with tools to dissemble my furniture (mine were already packed). They remained positive/fun and helpful as the move encountered a few obstacles. I did not feel that I got the deal of the century but I didn’t feel gypped either. The pricing was fair and they worked very hard. Hiring these guys made things much, much easier on me. I would absolutely recommend Moving Relocation Specialists.

My originally planned movers did not show up and Hector with Vazquez moving was able to put together a crew to move me into my home at the last minute. The crew was meticulous in protecting my belongings and were very careful not to damage my home moving out and moving in. Mosley is a great crew lead and you'll be lucky to have them manage your move. I would recommend them ... they are good people and did a great job!

I was very nervious about hiring movers because I have heard horror stories of them taking a long time to rack up more money from you. I was on a very tight budget and needed to move right away. We moved out of an apartment that was on the top floor that only had stairs. We moved 10 minutes away into a apartment that had an elevator and once again on the top floor. Move Central told me they would send three guys and a truck. My biggest consirn was the hourly rate of 125.00. Once the guys arrived they were very nice and ready to get to work. I was completely amazed at how fast and professional they were. They even had wardrobe boxes ready for us. These guys worked their butts off and they wrapped all my stuff so well that i even let them take my big screen TV in the truck. I was going to take that in my car but they really cared about how they handled my stuff. This was the best decision that i made hiring this company!! The three guys that moved us are Lanley, Edber and Austin. They move everything within 4 hours. Since i was so short on money i was only able to tip them 20 each and i felt so bad about that because they deserved 100 each. Thank you so much for making my first time using a moving company such a amazing experience.

Out of all the movers that I contacted for our long distance move, Mr. Houston was the best! He couldn't have been more pleasant and easy to work with. When you are dealing with something as stressful as a move it's nice to have someone who is so even keel and communicative about the whole process. He stayed in touch with me the entire move and was very accommodating to all my requests and questions. He gave me a flat rate quote that included everything so there were no hidden fees. His company moved our 4 bedroom house and vehicle from Oceanside, California to Phoenix, Arizona. They showed up on time with materials and completed the job in a little over 24 hours (loading truck, driving to Arizona, unloading into storage). I would highly reccomend their services. It was a pleasure to work with them!

All Star Moving did wonderful work for us! We presented them with a last minute high profile fitness equipment install for 6 guys at 7pm on a Saturday night. They were willing and able to accommodate our strange request, provided reasonable rates and pulled off the job without a hitch (which NEVER happens on these jobs.) Daniel was professional and helpful every time I spoke with him and I would definitely use them again and recommend them to everyone who needs a moving company for any reason. Thank you Daniel & all!

We had a wonderful experience with Oakley Relocation a couple of months ago. The move was for my elderly parents and the overall experience was better than I could have hoped for. Alfonso and his team were not only very respectful but also extremely supportive given that this was my parents' first move in 27 years. The entire process was very professional and Oakley took care of all the logistics, from procuring a permit to providing first-rate packing and crating. All the items arrived at their location in perfect condition and I would definitely recommend this company for all relocation needs. My mom still talks periodically about how great Alfonso and his crew were, which is a great testament to the company.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
