Buyer Beware: A Cautionary Tale About This Moving Company

I would give this company a rating of zero if I could. Please read my experience thoroughly before deciding to hire this moving service.

Initially, their pricing was competitive with other moving quotes I received. I decided to go with J&L to support black business owners in San Diego. However, my problems began when the movers arrived with a rented 26-foot truck. I expressed my concerns that the truck would be insufficient for the volume of my belongings, but Jermaine, a part-owner of the company, assured me that everything would fit. Unfortunately, this was not the case.

After a full day of loading, they were unable to finish because the truck was too small. Eventually, they rented a larger truck and reloaded my items, but by then, significant damage had already occurred. My belongings were scratched, dented, and some pieces of
furniture were broken. Several items were missing, and I noticed water damage to my chairs, among other issues.

I immediately informed Jermaine that while I could overlook minor damages, the missing bed components and the broken nightstand required either repair or replacement. I requested their insurance information so I could file a claim, but Jermaine refused to provide it. When I asked him about insurance before the move, he had assured me that they were properly insured. Instead, he offered to deliver the missing items when he had a job in my area, with no clear timeline. When I pressed for specifics, he was unable to provide any, leaving the
delivery potentially weeks--or even months--away.

In an attempt to settle the matter, Jermaine offered me $300 for the missing items and $100 for the water-damaged dining room chairs. However, these amounts were far below the actual cost to repair or replace the items. Naturally, I declined these offers.

I provided him with photographic evidence of the damaged nightstand and bed, yet Jermaine immediately accused me of falsifying the claims. The interaction quickly became frustrating, as he hung up on me several times and suggested that I have my lawyer contact him instead.

To make matters worse, I learned that this is a family-owned business with little to no experience handling large moves. The lack of professionalism and accountability was evident throughout the entire process. It became clear that not only did they lack the necessary expertise for a move of this scale, but they also failed to take responsibility for their mistakes.

Do yourself a favor and avoid this company. If you're planning a move, hire a professional service with experience handling larger moves. I deeply regret my decision to trust this company and hope that others will learn from my experience

L&J Beyond Transportation's reply
I’m writing to address the recent claims made by Rose R. Hong regarding our services. It has come to our attention that she is providing false information about damages, lost items, and alleged mistreatment during her move, which is both misleading and untrue. First, regarding the kitchen chairs: We informed Ms. Hong about the water damage before we left, and she acknowledged the issue. She chose to handle the cleaning herself, declining our offer to cover the costs. This was clearly communicated, and we took full responsibility of our mistake. Secondly, Ms. Hong has falsely claimed that a bed foot stand was missing. However, we have photographic evidence showing the bed and surrounding areas before we even touched the furniture, proving that the bed was put back (by the contractors) the same way it was shown in the photo from the old home. Thirdly, The only valid claim Rose made was regarding her two plant pots, which were unfortunately left behind in San Diego during her delivery to New Mexico. As a result, I have already offered to pay her $300 for the pots, even though she has not provided any receipts or documentation to confirm their value. (We took full responsibility for this matter.) Additionally, Rose’s home was still under construction when we arrived. At her request, we placed the items in the garage. However, I later discovered from the contractors through text that the contractors had moved the items into the home days after we completed the delivery. Rose has also made false claims about a broken nightstand, which was not broken when we left it. There was no indication of any damage at the time of our departure. This accusation is another fabrication designed to harm our reputation. Moreover, Ms. Hong has made accusations about our team hanging up on her. In fact, I have documented proof that she was the one who hung up the phone, and I made several attempts to reach her afterward to resolve any concerns. Finally, regarding the missing blue couch cushion, Mrs. Hong initially claimed it was missing, despite being clearly informed of its location. When I told her I have photographic proof that the cushion was left in the designated spot, she suddenly “found” it. It’s disheartening to see these false claims being made against our family-owned business, especially after we’ve always strived to provide the best service possible. These lies appear to be an attempt to manipulate the situation and secure financial gain. We stand by the integrity of our work, and the evidence we have collected clearly supports our side of the story. We value our reputation and have always been committed to treating our customers with fairness and respect.
