Alfonso and his guys were incredible! Boy do they hustle and get the job done professionally and are super clean and careful. Alfonso was so methodical about cutting down the tree and his crew scrambled beneath him to move and carry the branches out. He cut down a tree with ease that was dead and dangerously close to our neighbors house and my daughter's room. Then they tackled the giant tree in the front yard and it was down quick. I hate hiring people because I have bad luck and get screwed over and this time I was pleasantly surprised. I'd hire him again and will definitely be handing out his cards to friends and neighbors. Thanks for kicking ass Alfonso!

Chris helped us out on a huge yard cleanup weeding project at our rental property and we were so pleased we had him do a tree trimming yard cleanup at our house. He also helped us haul out an old bathtub and took other items to dump. He was always on time, helpful, reasonably priced, responsible, excellent service. Definitely will call him again as needed.

After 3 other quotes, I picked Chadd to do the job. He was fair, honest and reliable. He repaired the fence and also cut a tree that was causing damage. I was very pleased with the job he did.

Excellant! Thank you for an excellent job! Communication was outstanding. Laan's Tree Care did exactly what was requested. I had one tree cut down with stump grinding, and 3 trees laced; each done very well. Area was left cleaned. Thank you!!

I can't say enough good things about Jose and the landscape work he did for us! He and his team were professional, courteous and got the job done on time and within our budget. He laid pavers for us in our front and back yard, removed tree stumps, graded the yard and moved sprinklers. He also ran wire for low voltage lights. I highly recommend Jose for any landscape or home improvement job!

I requested several bids from different contractors to trim my trees in the Poway area. I have 8 full grown trees, plus 7 eucayptus trees along one side of my house, and 5 palm trees on my property (two of which are easily over 40 ft. tall). I hired Bernie because he is licensed and bonded, is knowledeable and experienced, and he offered me the most reasonable bid, overall, to do the work. Bernie brought in his crew and they worked for over 6 hours on a hot 93 degree Saturday to trim and clean-up all of my trees. Not only was their work outstanding, they did a great job of cleaning up my property before they finished. I would definitely recommend Bernie and his crew for tree trimming and other landscaping work!!

Greg did a great job with our project. He responded right away to my Thumbtack request and he came out that day to do an estimate. He and his crew were here today and cut down a tree and dug out that stump and 4 other stumps we had from prior trees/shrubs. He also trimmed and laced our front tree, trimmed our hedges and trimmed and stripped several of our palm trees. He cleaned up and hauled away everything and left it cleaner that he found it! Great job GM landscaping - thank you for making our life a lot easier!

I can't say enough about how great my trees and yard look after these guys came out yesterday. They did tree trimming (including a palm) , pulled lots of weeds, and removed an old stump. Ricardo promptly returned my call upon my leaving a message, they were out here the next day to give me an estimate and did the job a couple of days later. They showed up when they said they were going to both for the estimate and the work. Their rates are resonable and they cleaned up so well before they left that you'd never know they were here! Will definitely be calling them out for future needs.

Daniel was very nice to work with, he has an incredible tree climber/cutter. He's an artist with a chainsaw, it was a pleasure just watching him work. I would highly recommend DANIEL and his crew for any tree trimming needs that you may have. Fantastic work, and a very competitive price.

Juan was AMAZING to say the least! Our backyard was in a very poor state, looked like a jungle! Juan's team took out all the weeds, cut down the two trees we had and cemented our whole back yard, it looks like a new house! He said it would take three days do complete the job and he really took less than two and a half. His prices are very affordable and his team is very professional. Definitely would hire him again.

Gilberto is very through. I had him come out for a broken sprinkler system and thought there was just one issue, found I had a few issues. He capped off the pipe that was shooting water and found another pipe broken that gophers had chewed on. He suggested some easy alternatives to get my garden palm trees watered and also ideas on how to save us some money on our water bill. I mean, who doesn't love saving money. We were so impressed, we are getting a quote on a larger project we need done. Thanks Gilberto.

Finally someone who listened to us and was knowledgable about our situation. He was in the middle in terms of pricing, but, on the high end in terms of quality and reliability. We trusted him, and it also helped that after removing some diseased trees, he would plant the new ones for us. When we asked other tree trimmers about planting, they said no, just wanted to cut trees. JJ's is full service. We will definitely be using him in the future!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
