I have to say hiring Nima for some electrical repair and installation was one of the best ideas possible. He did an absolutely phenomenal job from beginning to end. I had personally interviewed seven other electricians to install floodlights motion detectors and a beam for home. Nima responded immediately, professionally, detailed in his process and procedure, and came in well below any of the other estimate. His work was flawless. I couldn't be happier and I promise if you hire him you will not be disappointed. He is a decent good man who does fantastic work for a low cost.

It was a good experience with a professional, the work looks good and the repairs have warranty as I found out with J.R. having to come back out to take care of a small issue. I'm looking forward to having him take care of other projects.

David came out to our home right away and promptly did the repair needed. He quoted us a price and that's what we paid. He also did a complimentary inspection of our plumbing and explained everything very thoroughly. We will be calling him back.

Just as described, AJ said for $89 he would inspect and even take care of any small repair if needed. He showed up on time. His inspection showed that we had bad wiring coming into the house. AJ called our electrical company and they came out to do the repairs. He charged the $89 which was what I expected. All in all no surprises and everything was perfect.

I am very grateful for the work Derrick did at our home. Derrick was professional, courteous, and very informative. He discussed what the process would be and what to expect. He repaired a door jamb and put back wood paneling back to the wall. He also repaired our sliding closet doors. Very well done! Thank you, Derrick, for your attention to details. I would recommend him.

Mission Electrical Contractor was the first one to call me and inquire about the electrical problems that I was having at my home. Jeff was also the first to make a quote and schedule a service call. These two facts got him the job. He drove about 45 miles to get to my location. When he got here, he inquired about the details of each task I needed him to trouble-shoot and fix. I immediately pegged him as someone who knew his job and he was very efficient at it. Customer service seemed very important to him. If I need someone to perform an electrical service in the future, he will be the contractor that I will call. I was very satisfied with his work. His fee was very reasonable. Very personable.

My experience with S & S Electric was superb! Sean was able to install my recessed lighting on short notice and installed 20 recessed lights in just 1 day! They covered all of my floors and furniture with plastic and left my home unblemished. Worked very efficiently and brought all the right material upon arrival!

WOW, WOW, WOW!!!!! ALL I CAN SAY AS A FELLOW THUMBTACK PRO MYSELF, I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO WOWED BY ANOTHER CONTRACTOR!!! Joe and his assistant were at my home on time. And what I thought was a 1 day job, turned out to be a few days. The quote I got was historical as was the final invoice. The house was a flip that we were remodeling and had many hidden problems that ONLY JOE was inclined to figure out. After one day, the problem was fixed. After two days, we were up to code. And after 3 days he added some extra's for comfort. I ended up giving him more work during the week since he was on point with everything, like light fixtures and ceiling fans which were like a piece of cake for him. He also installed an alarm system for me which seemed like he was able to do in his sleep!!! Long story short, and trust me, this is SHORT! JOE,

Following recent rains I had 2 roof areas that were leaking. Tom Torres promptly answered my request for estimates and provided one for a repair, and one for a complete roof replacement. Both were reasonable. I went with the roof repair which he scheduled within a week. He and his helper arrived on time, were finished within 4 hours, and cleaned up any debris. I did one of those "Oh, while you are here.." requests for the placement of a small area of flashing on the patio. He did this without the additional charge I expected. Tom is a pleasure to work with: very professional, knowledgeable, provides good quality work at a reasonable price, and is a people person. I will certainly recommend his company to others.

I had him come to remove a ceiling fan and install a new ceiling fan and wall switch. Because did such a nice job, I had him remove and install two bath faucets one of which needed more repair than I thought. He also repaired my tub faucet which I knew needed lots of work. If I need anymore repairs, I will definitely call him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
