This is in recommendation of the architectural design of my private residence undertaken by Arch Austin Etiaka late last year, October 2015. Austin is a fine responsible gentleman, intelligent, thorough and professional with his job. I had sat down with him and gave him a rough sketch of the building I wanted constructed and I was extremely impressed with his finished product. A real classic. This building which is my personal retirement home is currently under construction and I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this architect to anyone who may require his services. We have been great friends ever since my initial contact with him.And I intend to work with him again and again in my future projects. I had the best experience working with him. My old architect left the project in the middle due to family issues and Nathan saved my project and gave me peace of mind. I contacted him on Friday and he showed up at our store right away and spent I half hr explaining about the project. He quoted a very reasonable price much much less than my precious architect and also when I requested him to complete the project by Monday morning he delivered it as promised as opposed to my old architect who took hours and hours of meetings , multiple trips to city and health department, always finding reasons to find problems rather than find answers. Nathan made the whole process so simple, professional and pleasurable. Our plan is approved. I am extremely happy working with Nathan and would hire him again for my projects and recommend him to others.

I am an interior designer andI contacted Nina to help me incorporate my furniture layouts into the architect's CAD drawings. She was immediately responsive and accommodating. I met with her at her studio and spent a few lovely hours collaborating on the drawings. She had some wonderful suggestions, and was so fast and proficient. Ovalle Architects remodeled my recently purchased townhouse in Long Beach. As I was in a hurry to move in Mr. Ovalle worked weekends to get the project accomplished in record time. Despite this his fees were very reasonable. I highly recommend his architectural services.

Reza is outstanding in every way!! He took over a project from another Architect for us who couldn't provide the City of Santa Monica what they needed to issue a permit for many months, so we were stuck. Reza was quick efficient and worked through the issues diligently, so that we received the permit within a few weeks after we hired him. Reza is very professional, and we will ask him to work with us on all future projects in California. We will recommend Reza to all our friends and business associates. Reza provides very good and very fair value, he is very honest and efficient. We are thrilled to have found him on Thumbtack!!

Roland and Yukie did a phenomenal job - we were on a tight schedule and needed to take an empty roughly 2000 square foot space and transform it into a furniture showroom for our company and hired Scales Lab Architects to manage the project completely - they did a great job in analyzing our brand and presenting us with a layout that they felt would be best for the showroom, while also acting as construction managers and hiring contractors from their professional network to carry out the vision impeccably. Their professionalism, diligence and positive attitude made Scales Lab Architects a pleasure to work with from start to finish and we couldn't ask for a better final product with our showroom.

Simple and Straight yet powerful and committed till the end. He is a god in disguise to me and made things happen smoothly and successful. Very dedicated and Very Perfect - he is an optimistic architect, in a very short period he finished my plan n delivered it one night before as a surprise which was totally rewarding the city approved me at the first shot without any corrections and passed me a smile which made me feel am in the moon because this permit is very important for my family to stay with me in California. Thanks Mohsin am very glad i got your contact. He is highly experienced with vast knowledge of codes in architectural and structural engineering for residential projects. Provided high quality work, explained thoroughly all our concerns regarding bed and bath room re modelling project and then provided best solution in terms of use and cost. Building official approved plans without any questions or red line ( not a single line). Will strongly recommend to anyone. In fact;we offered him our next " courtyard conversion to room" project, as soon as this remodeling work is done.

Kate was the architect on our complete kitchen remodel. From beginning to end she exceeded our expectations. She is excellent at really thinking through every aspect of a project to make it both functional and beautiful. She has a keen eye for color and was also sensitive to areas of personal preference. I was also quite impressed by how totally professional she is--always responding to my emails right away, and meeting deadlines. She's also totally delightful and was a real pleasure to work with. I recommend her without reserve, and I truly believe she is a major talent!

Working with Jon has really comforted us in our endeavors to open a small fitness studio In DTLA. After speaking with several architects, Jon, by far, was the most knowledgeable and the most reasonably priced. I would highly recommend his work to anyone in need of architectural blue prints. He worked very closely and very well with another contractor we were dealing with as well to create plans to submit to our landlord.

Working with Ashley from Outline Studios was just a wonderful experience from start to finish. She assisted in planning, and executing a renovation of our 3br/2ba apartment. Due to budgetary constraints we had to execute the project in phases, a process she expertly guided us through. She even provided detailed drawings of rooms and custom cabinetry, helping us to save by not using an architect. The absolute best part of our experience was the thoughtful details she provided, knowing our daughters were very into art & ballet, she designed and installed an art nook and barre in our girls BR. They love their room! We will be eagerly recommending Outline to everyone we know.

I did 1500 sq.ft. project of Oriental Medicine clinic with Roi. It was my first time doing construction and he helped every step. Even though it was a small project, but he took his time to explain all the details about the process and he was willing to learn about new field of Oriental Medicine, so that he could deliver perfect design solution for my needs. If you value your architect’s personality and work attitude in addition to his professionalism, he is the perfect guy. I will definitely come back to him for future project. And I would strongly recommend Roi for any type of project.

Stan responded to my Thumbtack solicitation for a brewery-distillery in the Los Angeles area. Stan was communicative, prompt, professional, and provided a very reasonable rate. He also went above and beyond his call of duty, as several of our real estate deals fell through, and Stan did not charge for extra time / trips to accommodate this misfortune. He also took time to meet with me and work on the project when most others would be "off the clock." Stan is a great find. He has continuously been a source of strength and support on my project, which was completed in a swift and excellent manner. I highly recommend him!

Frank is a great and dedicated Architect. His attention to detail is amazing, and he always strives his best for his customer. I had a headache with a project that require me to deal with the city planner. it's for patio and laundry room project... that I got fined because it was not permitted by the previous owner. Frank was not only doing the drawing for me but also accompanied me to the city for 3 times. First is getting requirements, second is submitting plan, third meeting is the final plan. There are many rules on getting project approved in Los Angeles. Obviously, having Frank meeting with the people there,.. really helps a lot. He's able to make fast revisions and get the project approved fast too. After plan is approved, he's even taking time to speak with my contractor to make sure that plan is implemented property. Overall, I'm very happy with his service and I m confident to recommend him to anyone on thumbtack who look for an architect.

Gaspar is an awesome architect! After meeting with several architects, we chose Gaspar because of his price, his calm easy-going demeanor, and his knowledge. He designed a 3500 sq ft custom home for me. He was always responsive and easy to work with. He listens to suggestions and guides you with available options. His prices are competitive and he does his best not to incur additional costs. I would definitely work with Gaspar again.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
