I needed to move a huge, heavy glass-top desk from my apartment in SOMA to my office a few blocks away-- on foot. JP was great from the start. He arrived with a plan and got the job done in under 20 minutes! Every piece was handled with care, and the cost was much lower than quotes I got from big moving companies. I'd definitely book again.

This is my second time using this moving company. The movers are very nice and reliable. The company is also very responsive and accommodating with times. My second move (with same amount of belongings) took 2 hours longer than my first move with same amount of movers (3). They only have one of the movers assembling furniture which adds a lot of time to the clock. It seems as though they could do things a lot more efficiently to decrease time and $$ spent.

I had a very good experience. It was a small move. Most of the companies have minimum. MEAA movers did not charge a minimum. The prices were modest. Edgar and his crew were considerate, communicated in timely manner and did a really good job. Also i had made a mistake with the check. Edgar drove back so that i could correct it

I would rate Albion as superior. They were on time and extremely efficient (hence overall lower cost). I have moved several several times and I only wish other moving companies could take a page from their book.

Recently used Smart Move SF to move from a house to a condo. The condo required the move to be completed by a specific time, which most other moving companies said they wouldn't be able to do. Smart Move SF accomplished the mission - they moved us in time and they did an outstanding job. We previously used several other moving companies and we're happy we tried a new company this time because Rocket Moving was the best by far. Their 'all-inclusive' pricing was truly all-inclusive. There were no surprises, no haggling, no hidden fees. They were professional, showed up on time and packaged everything quite well (ie nothing was damaged). Highly recommended!

I hired Harp and his friend to move a couch and dresser for me. They were very efficient and Harp was easy to reach, but they put a big scratch in the side of the dresser while moving it. Still, I would probably hire Harp again for a small moving job and just ask him to be a bit more careful.

Matthew helped fix a door that was sticking in my bedroom. He was very meticulous about his work and showed incredible craftsmanship. His attention to customer service is unparalleled. His rates are very reasonable. He was prompt and super-friendly throughout the project. He has much experience working on very high-end home projects, much beyond mine. But what I appreciated is he was able to apply his learnings and high bar of craftsmanship to a very small project that I needed done...at a very reasonable rate. I'll be working with Matthew much more in the future!

Fixed my fence faster than expected and looks good. Very responsive to messages and payment was also easy through Zelle. One small issue was that they did not do enough cleaning and shards of wood were left on the grass, which isn't safe for kids.

Great experience working with Madison. In the apartment I'm sharing, my space is just 1 room and 1 bathroom, and some garage storage space. I've had stuff piling up for 2+ years in my room and it felt like it was bursting at the seams. I felt overwhelmed with the clutter and it would bring stress to me rather than joy and calm and peace and sense of play. But I wouldn't know how to start getting rid of things and organizing and cleaning up the clutter. Over 3 hours, we got rid of soo much useless paper I didn't even realize I had, and lots of other stuff that I always genuinely meant to get to or use, but realistically would never happen. For most of it I was feeling guilty whenever I would see it, and put it off because it wasn't a priority. With patience, understanding, and some coaching, she helped me release these things so I can focus on what is truly my priorities in my life right now, and identified some patterns I have that lead to the clutter I had. She helped organize in a way that brings some system to my room and my stuff. While I still have some work to do to make my room the way I want it to look, in the 2+ years, I wasn't able to do by myself most of the things we did together in just the few hours she was here. She helped me realize that I shouldn't beat myself up around the level of disorganization and instead get professional help so I can have the result and keep moving forward with my businesses and personal life while having a place I feel comfortable coming to and living and working in. Releasing and letting go of the excess crap I didn't need was an emotional experience because I realize I need to release and let go of things, experiences, and memories from my past that don't serve me in my life going forward :)

The team at Wally's was very responsive (jumped on my job with less than 6hrs notice) and tactical about moving my apartment. They took the time to wrap, and protect, all of my belongings before moving them and came well prepared with extra boxes/blankets. Amazing experience. Would use again and am referring friends! Note, they do have a minimum charge.

I cannot say enough good things about my excellent moving experience with Robert. I recently had to do a big move and trash removal. As you can imagine I was under quite a bit if stress researching moving companies and how to handle the situation. My friends recommend using Muver and brought up Robert's name. With Robert's help all stress went away immediately. His professionalism and attention to detail made everything simple and stress free. I would highly recommend Robert for any type of moving, trash removal, etc. Jobs.

Alex and company are amazing! We were being strung along by our big-name moving company, and needed to be in Missouri to start a new job. After yet another delay, and yet another "guarantee", we were desperate and found AmerApex Moving. Alex contacted us on a Monday and by Thursday, they were there! They were absolute lifesavers, and did everything they could to take care of our belongings and make us feel at ease. And then they were in Missouri by Saturday to unload everything in our new house! On top of that, they are incredibly friendly and made a stressful situation feel much lighter. We can't thank Alex enough, and wish every moving company out there could be half as professional and effective as his!

Very nice people, nice company, reliable. Go for it. I went with a dedicated truck option and I don’t regret it. Never used a moving company in the states, only when I move here from France. I highly recommend. Both, they were so charming and helpful, as they transformed a “scary moving” in a smooth operation… Perfect move !

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
