Mario did far more than install a few outlets, he went above and beyond to help me with multiple electrical issues and at an incredibly fair price. Highly recommend Mario! I am an interior designer and work with sub contractors all the time and he is an exceptional one!

James was fast, efficient, and solved every issue I had -- including coming up with ways to solve problems as they arose. He was very responsive -- i'm just now getting responses from people asking me to send them what i need and yet he finished the work 7 hours ago. He was careful, took the time to do the project right and didn't let obstacles slow him down. I would definitely use him again, and his contractor experience is a great help to whatever he was doing...he gets the job done!

I hired Freddy for interior painting. I stressed that it was an urgent job so he took it seriously and came to view the project within a few hours. He then made arrangements to start the next morning. I had quotes from other contractors who said they couldn't do it in any less than 2 days. Freddy finished the entire project in just one day with a superbly beautiful finish. I'm so happy I found him and so pleased with the result. I would definitely recommend Freddy if you want fast and high quality service. Great guy

If Thumbtack allows users to more stars, I would grade Maha for 10/10! Before our project started, we interviewed almost 20 contractors and Maha is the only one provided the professional in-depth site analysis with very detailed bidding with all items broken down into material and labor as well as the amazing schedule analysis (and we did have the project finished prior to the original projection date). Thru out he entire project process, Houman (owner of Maha) was showing all his professionalism into all the detail and he was on-site everyday working with his crew, providing prompt update and honest suggestion in all area. He also provided very helpful weekly progress summary that help me to show to my management for the update. The entire crew was all professional, friendly, and showing their care to the premise owner every moment. Communication is 10/10 as well. At the end of the project, I noticed some additional item that I omitted earlier, and Houman was able to help me on those as well altho he didn't have to, all respect for that. I definitely will come back to Maha again if I have another project coming, also recommend them to anyone looking for professional and sincere designer/contractor.

LGO got right back to me the same morning I inquired about their services. We picked a date, time and I got a rate for hanging floating book shelves in my bedroom and living room. River, the contractor showed up on time, had the proper tools and equipment and was in and out in less than 45 minutes. Great guy, knew what he was doing and cleaned up after himself too! Will definitely hire them again when I need to.

PROFESSIONALISM IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT when speaking of this person. Respectful, Courteous, AMBICIOUS, FAITHFUL to the customer. My husband was coming home on leave from the military and the remodeling of our bathroom was my gift to him. I couldn't wait to get started. I phoned Jim on Sunday, and he started the next morning. His time from start to finish was right on. The work that was done was to tear out everything and replace with new. I was excited to see the end result. He did electrical, lighting, plumbing, painting, tiled the shower walls, and floor. Installed (for the disabled) bars inside the shower as well by the toilet. New shower head too. He is a genius. LOOK NO FURTHER. The job was to the utmost expectancy of myself. When finished it was as if I was walking onto a showroom floor. You could tell by the way Jim works that he enjoys what he does. And once I saw it...alls I can say is, "YOU CAN'T GET ANY BETTER"!

I hired Vahe to do several different jobs and he did each one exceptionally well, and quickly. He was prompt, kind, easy to work with and actually restored a vintage mid-century table leg in addition to assembling furniture and wall mounting a TV. I will hire him again and I would give both his pricing and his work, five stars, and I can whole heartedly recommend him to anyone looking for thorough and careful work done in their home. His skills are varied and I know I will hire him for additional work to come.

ABSOLUTELY the BEST !!!!!!! Painted 15 years ago, age had not been kind to the weathered wood and peeling tex-cote paint on the exterior of my house. I obtained six bids for contractors to paint it again. I was impressed with Richard right from the start. He was very knowledgeable, so I hired him to pain one of my houses in Winnetka, CA. There are so many good things to say about Richard and his team. Where do I start? He seeks perfection. We are talking straight lines, clean lines, and the best material possible. His price includes Dunn-Edward or Sherwin William paint. You have 1,000+ color options to choose from. Because my house is frequently beaten by the 100+ degrees San Fernando Valley sun, I opted to upgrade to Life Paint's Cool life product for a lifetime warranty. The paint keeps my house cooler. It is thick, like yogurt - we are talking amazing quality. Their preparation to the house was perfection. They dug ditches around the entire perimeter, repaired a million cracks, sandblasted the exterior, sanded the windows, and replaced broken window panes (I don't need to replace them anymore!), and even cleaned up my neighbor's yard after the sandblasting job. Richard is not just a painter, he knows how to fix anything that is wrong with the exterior construction of your house, especially if it could negatively impact the painting results. He replaced multiple rotten wood beams on my back patio, the wood flashing on my side exterior door, removed the 1950's wood beams on my front porch, repaired window sill gaps, and replaced the entire wood siding on the side of my garage. He showed me where the previous painters even used Bondo to repair the rotten wood, rather than replace it. His price included the replacement of up to 20 feet of bad wood. He charged extra for the overage, at a very fair price. Truthfully, I was just happy that he knew how to repair everything and I didn't have to hire someone else. He is an absolute professional and extremely customer friendly. His team works quietly, music is kept to a minimum, they pick up their own trash, and discard your trash from the job at the end of the day. Their work area remains clean. He is present every day, supervising the workers. If something needs to be done, he jumps right in and appears to know how to do every part of the job. Speaking of customer friendly, I changed my mind about the paint colors so many times. He even repainted areas of my house just to make me happy. He was never frustrated with me, which I appreciate. As they say, a picture says a thousand words. Take a peek at the before and after pictures. The color is amazing - I'll take credit for that! However, I couldn't do it without Richard. He is an amazing consultant. He helped me to select the color, giving consideration to shaded areas and direct sun. So, I loved Richard's work so much that I have hired him to paint the inside of my house! Listen, if you are looking for a quality paint job, you need to hire Richard. He is the best. He is also trustworthy, knowledgeable, patient, professional, and fair priced. I highly recommend him!!! RICHARD, THANK YOU FOR AN AMAZING NEW HOUSE!

Geoff Davis is truly a godsend! I was searching for a handyman to help with repairs around my mother's home. . Other handyman services were truly price gouging her. In the past, we had horrible experiences with handymen doing terrible work costing us more to repair what they "fixed". We found Geoff Davis while searching for someone to repair my mother's patio cover which was damaged by the wind. Geoff was able to come up with a beautiful and creative way to repair the patio cover that was also affordable. After the repair of the patio cover, we had him paint her home, repair the rain gutters, repair the stucco walls and wrought iron fence, fix the shed door then he came to our place to repair the ceiling after a pipe leaked and replaced our hot water heater! His work is brilliant. He takes great pride in doing a job well done and treats you as if you were his family! With decades of experience as a private contractor, i truly believe there isn't anything he can't do! He is truly an answer to my prayers as knowing he is there to help my mother and to help us gives me huge peace of mind!

We hired Mario for several jobs in our house which were: wall/ceiling separation, roof leaks and covered patio repair. He did an amazing and thorough job and would recommend him to anyone that needs work done in their home. He's also a great and personable guy who charges fairly for his services, which is probably why he's busy with jobs all time! Great work and thanks again Mario!

Zee was actually painting the home across the street, and we asked him for an estimate. He gave us a fair price and a time estimate to complete the job. His work was meticulous and beautiful. We have crown molding throughout our home, he painted the ceilings, wall moldings and all walls. When the color we selected didn't turn out the way we wanted, he came back and repainted a couple of rooms. Works hard to please the customer and guarantees his work. He did a fantastic job. I would highly recommend him.

M.&R. did a great job painting the living room, dining room and hallway in one of the units in my triplex. They patched multiple holes in the walls left by tenants prior to painting and left the walls looking smooth and sharp. I’m very satisfied with the service and would hire them again for future projects.

Patrick installed our new microwave oven. He had to cut some of our wall tile to complete the install. Home Depot was originally going to complete the install, but said they could not cut the tile. So glad Patrick was able to get the project completed in about 2 hours. He was knowledgable and professional. We would definitely hire him again. Thanks Patrick!

Edgar and his crew were pretty amazing and thorough. High quality work with great communication along the way. Our new deck is beautiful. Would definitely hire this contractor again and highly recommend this company. Quality company with an innovative approach. Was sold on the day he came out to do the estimate. By the end of the day I received not only a competitive bid, but a rendering of the proposed construction.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
