I have used Scott Gressitt of San Diego Furniture Repair on several occasions and will continue to do so. His work product is superb. In this day and age finding a Craftsman that is honest, trustworthy, prompt, consistently providing superior workmanship st good value is s rarity. I will continue to use and recommend him to family, friends and other interior designers

I hired Arash Ghiasi to help me both with interior design ideas, and with the management and organization of the whole project. I am sure I will follow up with another review while the project is over, but there is a lot I can say even at this initial stage of the project. If you are looking for someone enthusiastic, inspired and inspiring, energetic and very knowledgeable, Arash is the interior designer you are looking for. He has already helped us a lot with space organization and colour selection, and the overall image of our space. As an artist (a painter) myself, I know quite a deal about color, and I can tell you -- Arash knows what he is doing when he chooses or suggests colors, and he has this rare ability to "synchronize" his thinking with your own feelings and ideas, which is is absolutely essential for an interior designer. The whole process was smooth, quick, and inspiring. As for the space organization, he offered us a solution for an area we've been struggling with for years. And it had a hallmark of all excellent design solutions: it felt completely right and (kind of) obvious when he suggested it. How could we not find it ourselves??? But the truth is, we didn't -- even though a lot of thinking went into it. All in all, we are very impressed with his work, his ideas, and his energy. I would recommend him to any friend who is looking for an interior designer.

We have a very unique luxury design project in the marine and yachting industry. It proved very difficult to find a qualified interior/exterior designer, who is not only experienced in commercial hospitality projects (upscale bars/nightclubs/restaurants), but is also willing to learn and expand into a new space, filled with unique naval constraints, and a myriad of rules and regulations! Fadi Soudi not only delivered on the project milestones, but went above and beyond to make several revisions to the design, based on project goals, budgets, and construction limitations, as they unfolded. The 3D renderings speak for themselves, in terms of quality, accuracy, and attention to detail. Mr. Soudi is innovative, open to new ideas, a pleasure to work with, and most importantly, delivers as promised. I would highly recommend him, and will certainly be working with him on our upcoming projects.

This is my first time working with an interior decorator. I hired Brooke to help me design my living room. We just bought a new house and are trying to mix the older furniture with the new. Brooke, came in, assessed the situation, took pictures and measurements then came back the following week with a whole presentation including 2 different looks. She seemed to really understand my taste and put it all together nicely. She also offered to bring some samples to the house so we can see what it will look like in the room before I purchase them. I'm excited to see the room when it is complete. Brooke has been awesome to work with so far and I plan to continue to use her services! I highly recommend Brooke. She's extremely reasonable when it comes to cost and definitely goes above and beyond.

My husband and I have never worked with a man interior designer before. We had wanted to for some time but were hesitant to do so. After reading the many great reviews about Michelle we both felt like if anyone can help us out our home together (with mine and my husbands taste being vastly different) it would be her. From the moment we met her, she was so easy to work with. She was always in contact about ideas, potential furniture or art pieces and amazingly stayed within our budget. She was so responsive and it seemed like she was working day and night to find us exactly what we wanted. She also surprised us with many beautiful items that we would have never been able to pick out or come up with on our own. She has a real gift and a wonderfully creative eye. Our friends absolutely love how our house looks and we truly do too! We cannot recommend her enough! Thanks again Michelle!

In a short time, Connie was able to give me feedback on what pieces did/did not work with design and flow of my main living spaces. It definitely set me in the right direction so that I don't make more costly mistakes!

Have you ever felt so overwhelmed by your environment? I have! I was a new sleep deprived mom dealing with a baby with so many health problems! I was honestly not even aware of how bad my house got, I could barely just keep the dishes done. But once the dust settled I literally felt trapped in my own house, I honestly felt like I was in an episode of hoarders, I just didn’t know where to start! Then I found out I was pregnant AGAIN, and I felt my world getting so out of control, so when my family asked what I wanted for my birthday I said HELP!!! I didn’t know where to start my search, I only found Interier designers for multi million dollar homes, that probably would of just laughed in my face and then locked me up in hoarders jail. I remember crying to Dustin feeling so overwhelmed asking him to help me after he just worked a 70 hour week! Thank goodness he had someone that was an interior designer!!! Tanya from Auxilio Design came to my house and honestly never made me feel like a failure. The process was so easy and so fun! She came to my house, I sent her pictures of my style, we worked out a budget, and then she did everything! It was like Christmas morning every time she texted me asking about a paint color or pillow. Then not only did she clean, organize, decorate, she works close with a contractor if you need repairs! Tanya was literally answers to my prays! We were able to work in phases, because we are working on one income! Our home is now the home me and Dustin always wanted! When I look back at those BEFORE pictures I cringe and want to cry. It’s ok to need help, as women and mothers, we can’t do it all, and I felt like a failure, BUT that’s not my skill and thank goodness there are people with an extreme skill like Tanya! Your home doesn’t need to be as dire as mine, but if you just want help with different color schemes or want your home to look like a magazine. Tanya can help with what ever you need. Thanks again for making me love coming home.

I’ve worked in many creative positions both as a stylist and as a designer. Some of my past work experience includes working as a model coordinator, merchandise coordinator and photo stylist for catalog advertising shoots, and as a photo stylist on fashion shoots, home décor shoots and window dressing shoots. I designed my own line of vintage-inspired nursery décor and clothing called Maison Jaune, worked on design teams for Ethan Allen and Bassett Home Furnishings, and spent a year working in Dubai as a visual merchandiser for several high-end Italian boutiques.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
