Fantastic experience with ACE Plumbing! Abraham responded to my work request within minutes and offered a very reasonable quote for repairing my dishwasher drain. Even better, he was able to come over within the hour and diagnosed and fixed the problem very quickly. At the same time he was thorough, double checking everything. He was also very professional, courteous, just a really nice guy! And explained everything to me very clearly. Highly recommend Abraham with ACE plumbing!!

I had a drain that was clogged, Jesse was in the area. He came over, determined that the problem was worse than anticipated. He went above and beyond in keeping the cost to me down. He made it a priority to have my drain line cleared and explained very simply how a previous plumber had created my drainage problem and what it would it take to get it to work without problems in the future. I have already saved his number and gladly refer him. I am leary of service plumbers because of the nightmares that I have heard, Jesse was a dream to have do the work, was very honest and I highly recommend him. Pete - Mission Viejo

Professional, punctual, polite, honest, friendly, flexible, and knowledgeable. We had a great experience with Daniel and would definitely hire him again. We highly recommend him to others. He installed two ceiling fans for us in areas where there were no previous fixtures. He installed all of the wiring, patched and finished the drywall, assembled the fans, and mounted them.

Had Cameron with XP Plumbing come out to give us an estimate for replacing a pressure regulator. Called to confirm appointment and showed up on time. Was very professional (dressed nice, courteous, and explained everything in detail). Said he could do the job immediately and have it done within a couple of hours. Unfortunately things didn't go as planned during the process. Not his fault and was due to a leak we discovered on the City side of our main valve which caused a leak/break on our residential side of the main valve which had to be replaced before any additional work on the pressure regulator could be completed). It was a stressful 24 hours but we were very impressed by Cameron's determination to resolve the issue and repair the leak/break our side. I think he would have stayed on-site until 3am if we had let him). Showed up very early the following morning and stuck it through to make sure the job was completed and completed well. Throughout the process he was dedicated and continued to assure us the job would be completed. Which it was. And the pressure regulator that he was initially hired to replace was replaced and looks great (see before and after pics). He even moved the shutoff valve to the right side (since we are right handed and it's easier to turn off). In addition to his dedication to the project, he provided us copies of all the parts receipts and took pictures of all the before and after work (which I've never had a contractor do before). I was impressed with his professionalism and all the work was done at an incredibly reasonable cost. Will definitely look at hiring Cameron again should additional work need to be done in the future.

Sergio Flores was fantastic. He came to give me an estimate the same day I called. His bid was very fair and he started the repair to my bamboo flooring the very next day. His crew worked into the night to finish the job in one day. I also asked him to bid on my fence repair and the exterior painting on my home. He is working on my fence today. I like that he bids the labor and material separately. He is easy to communicate with (I don't speak Spanish). I would definitely use him for all of my future projects. I have already referred him to my neighbor for her fence repair. When you find a contractor that can handle various projects, is prompt and honest, I hold on to them. I am willing to share him once he finishes my projects. Mary Malone 760-450-6215

Chris at Stride Plumbing and Drains was great to work with. He was responsive to my to request and managed to get the work done the same day i contacted him. Even better Chris was able to work with me even tho the repair was at my rental which was in a different city from where i live. He was able to convey what needed to be done through phone and text, he was also willing to coordinate directly with my renter to schedule a time to come by and at the end he was able to invoice me. Quick to respond and quick to get work done. 5/5

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

  • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
  • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
  • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
  • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
  • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.
