Marzia R. says, "I really wanted someone to help guide me to my fitness goals. I had the motivation, but no idea what I needed to do. I found Justin on Thumbtack and thought I'd do a trial. After an assessment, Justin created a plan for me that I could do with my limitations as a busy working mom. The plans are challenging, but very doable. He knows my limits and pushes them - just enough so I make progress! I have become stronger, leaner and my low back pain is just about gone! I feel better than I have in years. There is also the side effect of feeling very accomplished and excited at how much more progress I will make with Justin's guidance. Not only does he know what he is doing, but he's a nice, chill dude so the workouts with him are always a nice start to a good day. Also very easy to schedule with. Usually a couple of texts and we have figured out a time and date for our next session. I absolutely recommend Justin to anyone!"See more

Jonathan B. says, "I met Ana and scheduled a trial personal training session with her shortly after she moved from Brazil to the US, and she has been training me at my home gym ever since - over five years now! From the very first workout, her professionalism, knowledge, and dedication went above and beyond. Inviting someone into your home requires a great deal of trust, and I can genuinely say I’ve never had any issues with her; she has always proven herself to be honest, respectful, punctual, and dependable. Her workouts are always well planned, effective, and tailored to my goals, needs and limitations. What I appreciate most is that her training methods are science-based and grounded in a formal education - not on wacky trends or random information from the internet (no doubt because Brazil’s educational requirements to get a PT license are far more substantial than those in the U.S.) Thanks to Ana, I feel stronger, healthier, and more confident (& I’m lookin’ muuuch better, too! LOL). I also truly appreciate her flexibility when my schedule changes, as well as her ability to push me but also have fun with a sense of humor, and the friendship we’ve built over the years. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for an experienced, trustworthy, and highly qualified personal trainer."See more

Tim S. says, "I just finished my fourth session with Jonny...although I call him Jon now. Jon was ready to get to work from the moment I reached out. He promptly set up an intro call to go over my background and my fitness goals. We meshed quickly on style. I'm a 44 year-old moderately in shape man who wants to partially return to my 20s gym days. Instead of benching heavy weight, I want to build lean muscle through more body resistance training. Jon said this is the way he works out personally. Apparently, now that I know him, all Jon wants to do is various forms of planks so this was a good fit. Jon comes to my home gym twice a week. He's easy to work with. Conversation about exercise is great. He corrects my form regularly. He's quick with the compliments. Moreover, personal conversation is easy. Jon is just a good dude. You can feel it. He mixes up the routine with a few core staples like the aforementioned planks and "the world's greatest stretch". I leave the workout sore but not too sore. Lots of focus on core. Post workout Jon stretches me out. He has already set some flexibility and balance goals for me. I'll definitely continue using Jon as long as he does this."See more

Jerrold I. says, "I came to Lori Monroe for personal training at 83, seriously weakened by a neuro virus and aspergillus mold-induced Parkinson’s, chronically in pain. Nine months later, following a functional medicine non-drug protocol prescribed by our naturopath and working with Lori, I have few symptoms left, am virtually pain free, and my strength, flexibility and mobility are better than most my age. She methodically evaluated my condition, went to work on core strength first, then on building muscle, bringing back flexibility, increasing mobility (I have a natural stride again after deteriorating into shuffling), and stabilizing my balance. Lori’s a pleasure to work with. She’s knowledgable, warm and patient. She loves what she does and it shows. She challenges me but is also fastidious about avoiding injury, checking in about my overall energy level and any stiff or sore places from session to session, adjusting the exercises accordingly. When I told Lori I wanted to write a review for her she said, “OK thank you, but keep it real. Say anything that isn’t optimal for you, too.” Okay, Lori—but this is so no big deal: I have a lifelong word processing problem. Sometimes Lori revises the language of her instruction as we’re beginning a movement which results in a little brain scramble for me and takes a few seconds of mental effort to recalibrate. We straighten these glitches out on the spot. She’s never defensive, always gracious and considerate. In other words, if there’s any way Lori can adjust or improve her work to make it go better for you, she wants to. I never imagined I could rebuild to the extent I have. I intend to go right on rebuilding, working with Lori. Lori has special expertise in personal training for the disabled, but also trains people of all ages and physical conditions."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.
