I had hired Desiree to produce long form guides that covered all aspects of various government benefit programs. Desiree did an outstanding job with every project I sent her. We had hired quite a few writers to do this type of work for us and Desiree was always at the top in terms of quality. I would gladly hire Desiree again to produce future content for us.

I would highly recommend Jessica with your writing project. I found her to be organized, knowledgeable and very skillful at the job. Working with her was a delight. I wrote my memories of 125 pages including photos. Jessica was very instrumental in the organization, editing and physical publishing of the book.

Sean Michael Robinson is a multitalented wonderful professional & amazing artist! We are filmmakers who needed a portrait sketch that plays a key element in our indie feature film. Sean made himself available to us immediately and worked around our schedules. We didn't have an actual photo, so he literally had to recreate something from scratch and he had the patience to work with us! He worked closely with the director of the film and wouldn't leave until it was exactly how he wanted it to look. Sean Michael is wonderful to work with and we would recommend him to all!!! Joseph Descans helped me with the editing of several documents. His knowledge and editing skills were outstanding, and his patience with the process was the best part. It can be tremendously frustrating when you have "writer's block" and the words just don't come out right, but a patient tutor is such a great asset to have in your back pocket!

Teresa, almost single-handed, brought our struggling organization to a very proud and thriving organization. She was our fund-raiser and her communication and planning was beyond belief. The way she tackled our need for sponsorships shows she had our best interest and her heart into our organization. I attended many meetings with sponsors and city and county officials and was blessed to see her in action whether it was for sponsorships or grants. When we had our main event every September she didn't sit back and watch us work. She pitched in a went beyond what most people would have done. Whether it was hauling fruit or running to the store for ice, she helped make our event a complete success for each of the 4 years I had the pleasure of working with Teresa. She wrote grants, filed reports for the Board, scheduled meetings, and it seemed she worked for 20 hours a day and all this time, never complained and always treated people like they were her best friend. There are no negatives with Teresa that I ever encountered and hiring her will be the best move you could ever make.

About 3 years ago I stumbled on a flyer advertising a cartooning class taught by Sean Michael Robinson. As I had been an amateur cartoonist since the 8th grade I was intrigued…a friend at the art supply store I go to encouraged me to sign up, stating Sean “has quite a following”. I must say that after the very first class I was more than pleasantly surprised! Sean is one of the best art instructors I’ve ever had. He is engaging, kind, and dynamic. His classes are challenging yet fun! Sean pushes you out of your boundaries to explore your creativity – in a way that is at once exciting and non-threatening. I learned sooo much from Sean about drawing, inking, perspective, color – he covers it all. My personal experience after a few of his classes was that I was very motivated to continue – because Sean’s instruction and encouragement had given me the confidence I needed. This weekend I will be exhibiting my comics, watercolors and linocuts at a local festival and as I told Sean ~ I couldn’t have done it without the little push I got from him! ~Stephanie Morgan

My resumes are written with the five key elements that hiring managers respond positively to: clear, concise, meaningful, quantifiable and targeted. And, I make sure they are visually beautiful to look at so what you end up with is a highly polished written piece that wholly flatters you and your abilities.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
