I needed someone to move some TVs and art around to redecorate and refresh our office conference room, reception area and some of our executives' offices. Kerry was punctual and he did a great job. I chose him over several other highly rated providers because of his interior design and organization background and I am so glad I did. He enhanced the plans I started with and the project areas look better than I imagined. Kerry is a patient perfectionist!

I have used Scott Gressitt of San Diego Furniture Repair on several occasions and will continue to do so. His work product is superb. In this day and age finding a Craftsman that is honest, trustworthy, prompt, consistently providing superior workmanship st good value is s rarity. I will continue to use and recommend him to family, friends and other interior designers

Arash has proven to be a reliable, professional and skilled interior designer, not only in terms of layout, but also in the creation of custom furniture and paint. I hired Arash to design my "Bachelor Pad" - his recommendations on color, couch design and layout maximized the feel of space....tastefully. I appreciate his candor: he is not afraid to tell me his opinion, show me examples and spend the time to explain his position in detail. His energy, excitement and passion also got me excited about the project. As constructive, feedback to Arash, I would say that sometimes the energy was too high, but that is just a nitpick. I hope to do more business with him. Highly Recommended and more than happy to provide additional detail - Arash, just put that person in touch with me. Thanks.

Fadi was the best Interior designer and I did get estimates from other ones. He was able to give me 3D render with a finish product even before the improvements got started. I strongly recommend him to any future projects, my office design is very unique and it came out beautiful. He is very dependable and a very talented designer

This is my first time working with an interior decorator. I hired Brooke to help me design my living room. We just bought a new house and are trying to mix the older furniture with the new. Brooke, came in, assessed the situation, took pictures and measurements then came back the following week with a whole presentation including 2 different looks. She seemed to really understand my taste and put it all together nicely. She also offered to bring some samples to the house so we can see what it will look like in the room before I purchase them. I'm excited to see the room when it is complete. Brooke has been awesome to work with so far and I plan to continue to use her services! I highly recommend Brooke. She's extremely reasonable when it comes to cost and definitely goes above and beyond.

My husband and I have never worked with a man interior designer before. We had wanted to for some time but were hesitant to do so. After reading the many great reviews about Michelle we both felt like if anyone can help us out our home together (with mine and my husbands taste being vastly different) it would be her. From the moment we met her, she was so easy to work with. She was always in contact about ideas, potential furniture or art pieces and amazingly stayed within our budget. She was so responsive and it seemed like she was working day and night to find us exactly what we wanted. She also surprised us with many beautiful items that we would have never been able to pick out or come up with on our own. She has a real gift and a wonderfully creative eye. Our friends absolutely love how our house looks and we truly do too! We cannot recommend her enough! Thanks again Michelle!

Sid is a great contractor and a hard worker. I was very impressed with his eye for perfection and making sure his work was the best it could be. He was able to communicate all issues, plans, and ideas with me to ensure I was on the same page as him and was happy with where it was going. He takes pride in his work and it definitely shows. I would definitely reuse and recommend Artisan Design and Build in the future!

After 5 designers and one architect, we were 4 months behind schedule and over budget with our project. We never thought that a team such as this would just be able to, as they said themselves, just take care of everything. We went ahead and hired, them. In just three weeks they had all back on track, not only delivering specs but even figuring out construction details that were then approved by the architect to help us. Even some custom fabrication may end up being done by them. They had a ton of meetings with both us at our office and the contractor on-site. I don't think they are ever not working, sometimes would ask a question late at night and had a reply early the next day. Their style and experience is totally worth the investment.

Cassie is currently helping me with furniture selection and arrangement for a new house. Cassie came out on short notice and measured and photographed all my rooms and came up with several design ideas within that same day. She really listens to her clients and strives to meet their vision while respecting the budget. She is a pleasure to work with and I will update with photos when the project is done but she has already exceeded my expectations.

Birch Interiors LLC provided a service above and beyond my expectations! Andrea asked all the right questions, was able to meet our needs while staying within budget and the result was a “WOW!” The final product was amazing, Andrea absolutely delivered. I can say without hesitation that Birch Interiors LLC are nothing short of phenomenal and a key ingredient to my successful real estate business. I had an excellent opportunity to put the importance of their services to a test with a vacant and un-staged property, the reviews have been incredible and it has definitely increased traffic through our property. If you are looking for professional designers to make your home look beautiful, give Andrea a call.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
