I had a lady come by for the initial estimate. Her name was Jaeleah. She was an estimate manager. She was very nice and asked a lot of questions and took down a lot of notes and even left me with a business card. From there within the hour I received an email regarding the estimate and availability. I then, had a scheduling manager contact me to confirm details and day along with time. On the day of the actual clean up, I had a lead landscaper by the name of Catarino ( Cat for short) come with a young man named Kevin, Cat did not speak perfect English but he could communicate and tried very hard, Kevin spoke perfect English and helped me to confirm what I thought Cat was saying. The guys started the job which consisted of removing grass and weeds on a 3500 sq foot lot. I figured it would take the guys 2 days to do that kind of job. When I got home after work around 6pm the guys were actually finishing up. I mean, I was shocked. I walked the lot with them and we went over ideas and I mean I was so amazed by how hard and fast they got this job done. As soon as my husband gets back in town we are going to confirm what our next plant of action will be. Cat recommended I install new more drought resistant sod along with some gorgeous flowers he showed me that compliment the color of my home really well. He even showed me pictures of other sod and landscape designs he has done in the past and the work was exquisite. For the quality of work these guys provide and the professionalism these guys could easily be charging double if not triple the prices they charge. I am thankful I found you guys. Thanks for all the hard work you all did for us! We are excited for whats to come.

I have used Scott Gressitt of San Diego Furniture Repair on several occasions and will continue to do so. His work product is superb. In this day and age finding a Craftsman that is honest, trustworthy, prompt, consistently providing superior workmanship st good value is s rarity. I will continue to use and recommend him to family, friends and other interior designers

After having two TERRIBLE Experiences with the first 3 people I hired off of thumbtack, I was literally desperate to find someone I could trust to not rip me off and could get the job done. Then Steven came to my rescue! I'm so thankful that I found him and I simply cannot say enough good things about him! He's a man of many trades. The original job was repairing all of my interior doors and my interior baseboards/casings- so he took all the doors home with him on the same day as our consultation to be sanded down, repaired and re sprayed. He removed and replaced about 40 feet of baseboard in the condo (which turned out great!). Not only did he do a fantastic job with those initial jobs, but he ended up being able to do many other jobs for me while he was here too! He replaced my showerhead and tub spout, added a handheld shower fixture, repaired a broken Tv stand, retextured multiple areas of damaged wall, switched out some of my outlet receptacles with new USB receptacles, fixed two other outlets that weren't working at all for the last couple years, replaced my smoke detectors, and helped me repaint my bedroom, living room, and kitchen. He was FAST, efficient, friendly, and his overall work was done very well. This guy knows exactly what he's doing and will not leave until he knows the job is done- and done right! Even if that means he ends up losing money in the end- he isn't one of those contractors who quotes you a price and it ends up being double. He stands by his initial quote and that is something that very few contractors do! My only mistake was not hiring him to do the entire job. I thought that hiring two different contractors would help in getting what I needed done completed in a shorter amount of time. Well, I was wrong. The other guy did a half-assed job on his part, which resulted in me needing to hire Steven to come back and repair the other guys work in the end. Thanks again, Steven! You're awesome!!!

Contemporary Design Builders did home remodeling for me a year ago. It was a 15-year old house and the space was not so well designed. I bought it for flipping. The remodeling crew in Contemporary Design Builders removed the walls and created more space in the living room. Then they installed a new kitchen, the new wooden floor, and repainted the wall. It was a huge amount of work. Luckily the project manager made sure everything was under control and I didn't get unexpected trouble. I sold the house with a higher price than the amount I paid and the remodeling fees. I really wanna thank Contemporary Design Builders for helping me remodel the house. I made the right choice.

My husband and I have never worked with a man interior designer before. We had wanted to for some time but were hesitant to do so. After reading the many great reviews about Michelle we both felt like if anyone can help us out our home together (with mine and my husbands taste being vastly different) it would be her. From the moment we met her, she was so easy to work with. She was always in contact about ideas, potential furniture or art pieces and amazingly stayed within our budget. She was so responsive and it seemed like she was working day and night to find us exactly what we wanted. She also surprised us with many beautiful items that we would have never been able to pick out or come up with on our own. She has a real gift and a wonderfully creative eye. Our friends absolutely love how our house looks and we truly do too! We cannot recommend her enough! Thanks again Michelle!

Carolyn is passionate about her business and has the skills to back it up. I'm a finance person, so non-creative, and she waltzed into my home and re-designed what I thought could not be cozy into a warm, inviting home. Each room has a theme and all space is being utilized. Not to mention, we did it over 36 hours in one weekend. I highly recommend working with Bunny on a Budget for your home décor, interior design, and organization needs. - Lauren

Working with Zenith Construction was hassle-free. We had them pour new concrete in our backyard patio area and we couldn't be more pleased with the results. Zenith also painted the entire interior of our home as well installed some new can lights in our kitchen. Their work is very clean and they remained within our budget.

In August we moved to a new home in Poway. We love it so much but found ourselves in a furnishing dilemma. None of our old furniture fit into the new house and we just didn't know how to configure the rooms or what style we were going for. We felt like we needed help! We looked up interior designers on Thumbtack and kept going back to Kim Smart of Smart Interiors. Within 20 minutes of Kim walking through our front door we felt like a plan was evolving. Kim Smart has a great eye for color and design. She nailed our style with just a quick walk around our house. She is helping us add to what we have to get a more complete and consistent look. As we look for furniture and decorating items, Kim is great with sending pictures and links of ideas she finds that are perfect for our home. Not only has Kim helped us define our style but she is keeping us focused on our look and color palette. We were stuck...but with Kim’s help and guidance our house looks better than we could have imagined! We also love that she is so flexible. We can use her as much or as little as we need while we are decorating our home. Just have her come give you a consultation and her expertise and passion for design will inspire you! Jagger & Kristi

Bathroom update results were exactly what we had agreed upon. We were very satisfied with the remodel. Since our first experience with Nicholas Reyes Construction was so positive we also had him replace our kitchen floor. His suggestions for different baseboards and floor placement added to the great look of the new flooring. Would not hesitate to hire him to do another job for us.

Cassie is currently helping me with furniture selection and arrangement for a new house. Cassie came out on short notice and measured and photographed all my rooms and came up with several design ideas within that same day. She really listens to her clients and strives to meet their vision while respecting the budget. She is a pleasure to work with and I will update with photos when the project is done but she has already exceeded my expectations.

I have worked with Brian Milburn on several projects… His unique ability is at heart the capacity to listen and transform what he hears into the vision of what my home became. There's always the concern for homeowner who is working with a designer that they may not be heard… Or, their ideas are not going to be translated into somethings special. Brian's capacity to merge design into my ideas and creative vision that transcends trend has Brought about incredible joy to our family.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
