If you are reading this it's likely you are experiencing the same anxiety, fear and disgust at the suspicion that you have BED BUGS. Over three weeks ago I was where you are: Covered in bites, and taking all my clothes and bed linen out and washing and drying them on hot had not fixed the problem. After reading all the reviews on here I chose to call William. He answered immediately and arranged to come out that day. He was knowledgable, kind, sympathetic in the face of what is a really stressful situation. I felt confident I was in safe hands, especially given William will come and do a second spray three weeks later, without any Extra cost. It took him about an hour to spray and two hours after that I was able to go back into my apartment. That night I thought I got bitten again but I realise now that my skin was delayed in reacting to the bites of the night before. William responded to my concerned texts calmly, promptly. THE BEST THING - the Bed Bugs were gone after the first spray! No more bites, no more bug sightings, no more horrible anxiety and feeling like a total leper. There is nothing more amazing than the realisation that I was free of those horrible little critters. Thank you William, I can't recommend you enough. There's a reason this guy has amazing reviews!! **NB: if you see one of these awful little critters, I would advise catching it on a piece of clear tape and attaching it to a card - that way William can clearly identify that you do in fact have bed bugs and can treat them ASAP.

Venom Pest Control took care of my problem without a hitch. I had traveled to Europe and came home with more than I had taken. Yes, you guessed, Bed Bugs. About a week after I got home, I noticed these marks on my arms, and as the days passed, I kept getting more. I went to the dermatologist and he told me they look like bites from bed bugs. I called Vermon Pest Control and they were here in a few days. VPC sprayed for bed bed bugs, and now my apt is bug free. What a relief!

They came out immediately after I found bed bugs in my roommate's bed. I was horrified & embarrassed, paranoid that my entire condo was infested. While I have a tendency to overreact, the cool person that they sent out was exactly what I needed. He had a great sense of humor, gave me a direct & exact quote, was honest & extremely quick & efficient. I would highly recommend.

After having multiple kids stay at our house, my kids started getting bit up and after finding out that it was bed bugs (unfortunately) I lost days of sleep. Greg came to my house yesterday to spray for (unfortunately) bed bugs and my husband and I just loved him. From the 1st call of him knowing pretty much everything about these nightmares to his affordable prices to his initial visit which he showed up EARLY. He gave us so much advice and was so knowledgeable and down to earth. I can tell he knew what he was doing and genuinely cared about his business. I’ll give it a few weeks and update my status as far as how fast the spray works. But customer service and punctuality he gets an A+ in my book. Thanks Greg 😉

I was horrified to learn I had bed bugs. George was the first person I spoke to after wasting hundreds of dollars on extermination that did not work. George gave me a quote on the phone for heat fumigation treatment. He then came to my house a couple of days later and treated my house. His team was awesome. Theyndid a great job and I haven't had any bites since. Would highly recommend him to anyone.

Howard with Five Star Pest control was incredibly efficient and genuinely kind. After a bed bug issue in my apartment became all too clear, I found Howard on Thumbtack and he extensively walked me through the process of preparation for fumigation. Howard stopped by at my home for the initial visit and I saw significant improvement in decline of bugs. He phoned me several time to check in on me and inquire about the status of my dilemma. After two weeks, he came by again for a follow-up and it's now been over 20 days with NO bed bugs! Thanks to Howard and Five Star Pest Control not only for a successful fumigation but for exceptional service!! I can't stress enough how grateful I am for the service during this stressful experience. Just call him, and you'll be able to tell in the friendly tone of his voice and conversation that you're dealing with quality. Thanks again!

Robert and his trainee (I'm so bad with names!!) were very professional, knowledgeable, nice, and discreet (bed bugs are embarrassing!!). We chose them because they are able to use the bed bug dogs, and if the bugs are found are able to exterminate using heat instead of chemicals, which was very important to us. One of the ways that we know they are nice and honest is the fact that no bugs were found! :) We did find an actual bed bug months ago and had someone else come out and also say there was no evidence of an infestation. But, we couldn't shake the fear that more may have hatched from the one that was found. And for some reason we really liked the ability to use the bed bug sniffing dog. We can now sleep easy! Thanks!!

It’s sometimes difficult to find a reliable service business out there, in today’s world. However, there’s one company that has gone a long way in restoring our faith in the idea that there are indeed actually some businesses out there that actually provide what they advertise. We called Best Pest Control Company after talking with several pest companies on the phone, all of which we found on this, and/or other referral sites. Right from the beginning of our telephone conversation, these guys just seemed to sound more professional, and knowledgeable about their industry. They were willing to answer questions that others just balked at. All of this, combined with the fact that they had so many more positive reviews on various sites than did most of the other companies we spoke with prompted my husband and I to give them a try. We had them come out to attempt aiding us in our longstanding battle against ants and silverfish. They were on time for their appointment with us, and answered all of our questions that we fired at them They won the battle on their first attempt. We didn’t see a sign of either of these problems for months. Eventually the ants came back, but that was understandable after so long. We’ve had Best Pest back to our home several times to battle various infestations since that first meeting. They’ve yet to disappoint us. Highly recommended.

Bed bugs are Satan's children. You don't want to deal with them. I worked with Chad, and he helped my wife and I get through it. He was polite, understanding, helpful and de-stressing from start to finish. He arranged Vikane fumigation of our belongings, and inspected our cars and bedroom for a fair price. He did more for us than he had to so that we'd have some peace of mind. That last word is important. Forget the mattress, bed bugs get into your mind. Someone friendly like Chad helps you reclaim your sanity.

John Guerra from Innovative Pest Solutions came to my home on a Sunday - I'd called concerned about possibly having bedbugs. Judging from my description of my bites on the phone, we were suspicious. But he came and did a very thorough inspection, lifting and flipping beds and parts, looking in cracks, etc. Luckily for me, there was no evidence of bedbugs. We did find spiders and carpet beetles, which explained the marks on my skin. It was a pleasant inspection and I feel better educated as a result (as well as relieved.) John suggested some easy DIY things I could do to deal with my minor problem, and some steps of things I could hire them for should I want to escalate. But he was very low-pressure. I trust both his knowledge and his integrity. I highly recommend this company.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you get bed bugs and how do you get rid of them?

The increase in bed bug infestations in the U.S. is a result of increased travel, lack of knowledge about preventing infestations, increased resistance of bed bugs to pesticides, and ineffective pest control practices, explains the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It’s easy to mistake bed bugs for carpet beetles or similar-looking bugs, so infestations are often not noticed when they first occur. Prevention tips include keeping areas free of clutter, regularly washing sheets and mattress covers in hot water (and don’t forget to wash the laundry bag, too), and vacuuming regularly and safely disposing of the sealed vacuum bag. Not everyone has reactions to bed bug bites, which also may be mistaken for the bites of other pests such as mosquitoes, so timely bed bug extermination depends on identification of bed bug activity. If you notice physical signs of an infestation, contact a bed bug extermination professional as soon as possible to learn about chemical and non-chemical (such as heat) treatment options. An integrated pest management plan may incorporate one or more methods.

How much does it cost to kill bed bugs?

The cost of bed bug extermination depends primarily on how widespread the pest infestation is and how many rooms need to be treated. Other factors that can affect bed bug extermination costs are the amount of clutter in the location, additional furniture that needs to be treated, and construction of the home. Pest management professionals often have rates for room treatments, which can vary based on these factors. As an example, a pest management company treating a 10-by-15-foot room with light infestation might charge clients about $250, while the same size room with a heavy infestation and large amounts of clutter might cost the clients $300-$400. Clutter and heavier bed bug populations mean more product and longer labor time for the workers. Rates will vary from company to company, and from region to region, but the national average bed bug extermination cost is $320-$400. Bed bug heat treatments are an alternative way to exterminate these pests. Heat treatments are typically charged per square foot and tend to cost more than chemical or non-chemical spray solutions. Although effective, they are not usually recommended for occupied spaces, as the extreme temperatures can damage televisions, window dressings and other home furnishings.

How do you check for bed bugs?

If you are concerned you have a bed bug infestation, look for physical signs of their presence. Bed bugs love to hide in small, dark spaces and typically come out to feed (generally on human blood) after dark — although they will come out in daylight if hungry enough. The Environmental Protection Agency states that indications of an infestation can include seeing shed exoskeletons of bed bugs, rusty spots on your bedding (which are either bug droppings or bloodstains), live bed bugs, bed bug egg casings, a sweet and musty odor (if the infestation is severe), and evidence of bites on your skin.

To spot bed bugs, look in and along mattress seams and bedding, in curtain and furniture folds, inside cracks or crevices in the walls, behind picture frames and mirrors, under loose wallpaper seams, on recently used luggage or backpacks, inside electronics, and inside clothing or cluttered areas such as closets. If you see signs of bed bugs, be careful not to disturb them too much as you don’t want them scattering to other parts of your house.

How long does a bed bug treatment last?

Bed bug extermination can last forever as long as the treatment killed all the bed bugs (and their eggs) and if new bed bugs are not transported into the location. Factors that can affect the outcome are how severe the infestation is and whether all bed bug sources were properly identified and treated. When working with a pest control professional, the EPA recommends you check and call references; ask if they offer both chemical and non-chemical treatment options, if they recommend both encasements and interceptors, and if they offer two or more service visits and follow-up. Bed bugs are tiny (adults are roughly the size of an apple seed) and can hide anywhere a credit card can slide into. They squeeze into cracks in walls, behind electrical outlet sockets, in bedding, and in other dark places. Learn how to prepare your home for a bed bug treatment for the best outcomes. Michigan State University shares some examples of possible reasons that a bed bug extermination is not 100 percent effective:

  • Not all sources (aka hiding places) of the bed bugs were identified during initial inspection.
  • Not all sources of bed bugs were treated.
  • The insecticides used were not effective or, in the case of heat treatment, there was insufficient contact time.
  • Infested items such as bedding or other materials were reintroduced into a cleaned area.

What is the most effective way to get rid of bed bugs?

The EPA recommends integrated pest management as the most effective way to get rid of bed bugs. Integrated pest management (IPM) can be carried out by a pest management professional safely and swiftly. The professional will assess the level of infestation in your home or building. The pro will determine the sources of the bed bugs: whether they are hiding in one location, are occupying multiple locations in one room, or have set up camp in multiple locations throughout the house. Based on the severity of the infestation, IPM can include thoroughly cleaning the area using containment protocols (safely packing infested bedding and other items into plastic to be disinfected), the appropriate pesticide treatment, and the necessary follow-up to eliminate any new hatching eggs. The EPA recommends chemical treatments (when safely applied) because “although bed bugs may sometimes be controlled by non-chemical means alone, this approach is often very difficult, potentially less effective, and usually more resource intensive.” Use caution if you attempt to use pesticides yourself. Carefully follow directions and know that some bed bugs have developed resistance to pesticides. Pesticides that are licensed only for use by professionals are known to be stronger and should be applied with the proper tools and techniques.
