The makeup artist was professional and on time. She knew what she was doing. My suggestion would be to have a look in mind ahead of time so you can guide her before she starts.

Talented and sweet, Jesse is fantastic! His makeup is as good as it gets. I LOVED working with him and would not recommend anyone else. His approach to makeup is exactly what it should be: enhancing the natural beauty and features for every client. He has a gentle touch and allowed me to sparkle in my own particular way. I had done trials with at least 5 other makeup artists and always walked away feeling like a clown. Jesse was exactly the opposite. When I looked in the mirror it was the most beautiful I have ever felt. It was the perfect combination of natural yet glamorous. Exactly what I was looking for! I felt like me –just with allot of extra confidence and glow! He did my makeup and also my 5 bridesmaids and mother's wedding makeup in June in Sacramento, CA. He was extremely flexible and never took any suggestions personally. He reassured me he would do whatever it takes to "make it perfect" day-of. That is what he did and more! My bridesmaids truly LOVED their makeup and were so excited to get "all pretty" with Jesse. He was extremely flexible - from our 1st trial to the day of, he listened to all of my concerns and preferences perfectly. He stayed with me to do touchups, which was so important, especially if you shed a little tear at the ceremony (wich I did)! Hes also extremely responsive and speedy on email, which is always comforting for a bride. I'm wholeheartedly impressed with Jesse and his makeup capabilities. I looked exactly how I imagined I would look when dreaming about my wedding day as a girl. He helped in making it a day I want to live over again and again.

Oksana is the best! My friend recommended her after she did her bridal party i had her do mine (8 people) she is very diffrent from other makeup artists that i ever tried! Whats unique about her services is she asked us step by step how we like our makeup she didnt just go ahead and do what she wanted she did what we wanted! She asked how we like our brows natural or defined, blush suttle or more, contour,if we want to be glowly or matt, what lip color, she swatched colors on her hand before putting on us so we can see color how it looks, every step she did she asked and explained what she is using and what kind of products. She is super sweet, fun and made my day more exciting! She arrived on time and we LOVED our makeup we got so much compliments and it lasts ALL DAY in thr heat of the month July!! 💋Thank you sweetie for being the best and making us look beautiful 💕

Courtney is phenomenal instructor, a talented makep artist, as well as an amazing human being! I took her makeup artist certification course in February and was amazed by how much I learned in such a short amount of time. The course is very hands on and Courtney's teaching style makes everything very easy to understand. Courtney is very encouraging and truley believes in all of her students. She gave me a great sense of confidence which helped me complete the course and move on to be a successful makeup artist!

If I had to choose one person to get beauty advice from whether it is skincare or makeup, it would be Diana. Diana is an incredibly talented makeup artist. She did several different makeup looks for me and I absolutely enjoyed every single experience I had with her. The makeup looks she did for me were smokey eye, bold lip, and fantasy makeup. Although these are three completely different looks and not something I normally wear, I loved all of them and was truly impressed by Diana's skill and knowledge. The quality of her work is amazing and she always places the wants of her customer first. I also did my first waxing with Diana. I never thought I would be brave enough to try waxing. But Diana not only did a great job, but it turned out to be practically a painless experience for me. She also followed up with how I was feeling for the next couple of days after the procedure. Diana truly cares about her customers and makes it so easy to connect with which is what I think makes her such a great beauty specialist. I would definitely recommend Diana to anyone who is looking for a makeup artist. She's truly amazing at what she does!

Thank you so much Lindsey for making me into a such beautiful bride!!! Many people said I looked so pretty today, that I should look this pretty everyday! Ha, they don't know how much work it would be for me to do, probably after 20 years of trying. You made it look so effortless! Thank you for putting up with my family and friends putting in their two cents. Your intuition was the very best, except for the 1% of my father's insistence! You did a wonderful job! Thank you soooo much!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

    • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
    • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
    • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
    • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
    • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

    • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
    • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
    • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
    • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
    • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
    • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
    • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
