Where shall I start? I started my Loc journey last year at exactly this time (November). I had already been to 2 other locticians, and Sky is the third and final. The high caliber of work that was done was the whipped cream on top of the Chai Tea Latte-so to speak-for me that is. I called on Veteran's day, and even though Sky was busy running errands with family, she took my call, listened to my dilemma surrounding my negative past experiences, and booked an appointment with me right away. About a week later, a few days before our appointment I asked if she would have an in-person consultation with me. She agreed, and saw me the same day. She sprang into action, carefully examining my tresses as soon as I walked in the door, asking me pertinent questions that my last two stylists didn't even bother asking. Then she demonstrated one loc, using the interlocking tool (an amazing one I had never seen before), and before I could blink it was done. No pain, but tight, clean and neat. AND, she WRAPPED the loc so it looked uniform, primped and beautiful (something that neither of the previous locticians did). I run a business, and I need to keep a professional appearance. This put her at the top of my list instantly. The actual day of my appointment was even more fantastic. I arrived at Sky's Hair Oasis and there was Sky waiting for me with a smile on her face. We began right away with the shampoo, which smelled wonderful. Next, she put a treatment in my hair, (which also didn't happen at the other salon) and proceeded to let me sit with it for a few minutes. Next another wonderful shampoo then off to the chair. While Sky worked on my locs, she allowed me to see her work, in the process and explained what she was doing in real time. She also recommended simple, natural products to use on my hair to keep it looking fabulous, healthy and fly, as well as when to wash it next. She was fast, didn't take a bunch of breaks and had me on my way early to my next engagement. I actually felt like a client, a family member and a friend. I now have confidence in my crown, and I know when I walk out my door, I am put together. My students even commented on how my hair looked, saying it was "very pretty" (they are elementary school students)! I am very pleased with my experience, and look forward earnestly to my next appointment. THANK YOU SKY!! It is people like you who take the time to execute integrity, professionalism and tact, while educating those of us that are new on this journey of locs.

Vanessa was so professional. 1) she travels to you, 2) she was on time (even in beach traffic), 3) she was gentile on my hair and 4) the results were amazing, I've been to the "high end" salons and my hair has never looked better than it did when Vanessa was finished. I was not in the Solon for five hours and leaving with a headache.

Mayra was an awesome makeup and hair artist! I loved how she came to my hotel and even brought her own lighting! I felt like a movie star and very pampered! I got so many compliments on my hair and makeup-I went as a guest to a wedding and people thought I was in it. Aside from that, she was responsive to emails I sent her before the appointment with ideas of what I wanted for my hair and makeup. I totally reccomend that you book her!

Marisa is a hidden gem!!! She listens, educates and honest about expectations which are hard qualities to find. She did an incredible job bringing my brassy streaky hair to an ash that compliments my skin tone. I highly recommend her and can’t wait to see her magic with my next haircut!!

Wow! What an amazing experience! For the first time in a long time I have found a stylist who can give me exactly what I am looking for. It’s been awhile since I’ve loved my hair when I have left a salon and I am happy to say that is now over! Thank you, Jasmine for the beautiful color and haircut and the wonderful conversation! Can’t wait for our next visit!

I was tired of my color and cut and was having one of those days. Girls, you know EXACTLY what I mean! My colorist had moved out of the area (tragedy, right?) and I called Salon One on the off chance they might be able to fit me in that afternoon. Boy was that my lucky day! I was fortunate enough to be scheduled with Allison. She listened to what I wanted, made me feel very comfortable, and then gave me a few suggestions for some changes that would work with my skin tone, hair texture, and facial shape. A few hours later, I was a whole, new woman (and looked so much younger). That was about a year ago. I get so many compliments on my hair; the cut, the color, how soft it is.....THANK YOU ALLISON! I will never go to another stylist again if I can help it! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my hairstylist (and my hair now)!

I had my hair cut and had balayage highlights done by Dee, and I LOVE my results. I was looking for a subtle change but wanted something natural, and Dee simply nailed it. Another thing that impressed me and showed Dee’s knowledge was how she chose to dry my wavy/curly hair before cutting it to ensure she didn’t cut off more than I wanted. I appreciate her talent and the time she took to make sure I was comfortable and received the look I was going for.

I received a haircut and color from Kris today at Salon 359 in Newport Beach. What a relaxing experience. I have a lot of grey in my hair these days, and have always been apprehensive of getting it colored. Kris assured me it would look natural when he was finished and that it would not be a drastic change. Kris delivered with flying colors! (I know, I know... Weak salon humor) It really came out great, and doesn't look fake or that I'm trying too hard. Kris had me laughing the whole time I was there and we talked a lot about music too. Great experience.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a hair extension?

A hair extension is a beauty product designed to give you the appearance of longer and/or fuller hair. Hair extensions are made of synthetic material or real human hair and are attached to your natural hair by a variety of techniques such as a weave (sewing), hot fusion, tape-in, cold fusion, bonding, metal clips, micro ring or micro loops, and more. The type of technique you select as well as the quality and volume of the hair you choose all affect cost. Hair extensions can last anywhere from three weeks to six months, depending on the application technique. For example, tape-in extensions may last approximately four weeks, while extensions applied using a hot fusion technique may stay in for up to six months. The hot fusion technique takes longer, costs more, and requires more training on the part of the hair stylist, but the result is more natural-looking extensions that can be washed and heat-styled with confidence.

      What is a mobile hairdresser?

A mobile hairdresser is a cosmetologist trained to cut, color and style hair who can provide hairdressing services at remote locations. Often, mobile hairdressers are hired for events such as weddings, bachelorette parties, prom night, birthdays and other occasions. The hairstylist can come to your location to do your hair, or provide hairstyling for your group.

For events, mobile hairstylists more often provide updos and formal styles than highlights or hair color. Mobile hairdressers bring all the necessary hairstyling tools and products such as lotions and sprays to create your look. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110. Pricing for different services can vary greatly depending on stylist reputation, training and regional rates. For example, haircuts could range between $35 and $150, while hair coloring services could range in price from $65 to $200. Some mobile hairstylists may include the cost of travel in their fees, while other may have it as an added charge, such as 50 cents to $1 for each mile beyond their standard service range.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

      • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
      • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
      • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
      • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
      • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How much should you tip a hairstylist?

A hairstylist can provide you with a cut, color or highlights, or style your hair for an event. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110, but prices can vary greatly depending on the service you receive, where you live, and the salon’s or hairdresser’s reputation. A good rule of thumb is to tip your hairstylist 20 percent of your total bill. In smaller towns, 15 percent may be the norm, but in larger cities 20 percent is generally the baseline. If you frequent a salon where the shampooer, colorist, and hair cutter are all different people, you can divide that 20 percent among those service providers in proportion to the skill level and time required to do their job. Many hairstylists rent a chair from the salon and must pay a monthly rent to the salon owner.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
