I have hired Derek Draper several times on feature film, TV and new media projects, both in narrative and non-fiction. On the feature film, Wedding Palace, he was the picture editor, and ended up doing so much creatively on the project, in terms of improving the story and positively influencing business matters that he became an executive producer on the film. The picture ran for 14 weeks in US theaters and is available streaming on Amazon, Hulu and iTunes in N America and received theatrical distribution throughout Asia.
As a colorist I hired him on a documentary project KPOP Brings Peace to the Middle East, where he unified the look of footage that was shot with 5D, go pros and Sony HD cam. I also brought him on to color a sample for my reel that for a webisode series I directed Yogurtland Franchising. I did not like the finishing that was done when we produced the webisode, so I went to Derek to re-colorize and he really brought out the feeling of the environment much better than the webisode series itself.
For a TV project I produced for KCET (the largest public media organization in the US), Derek served as the co-writer for a doc-news show. Stellar work.
I cannot say enough good things about how versatile and talented Derek is. His only fault is that he does not promote his talents enough, he is very humble about his perfectionism and creativity. I highly recommend him for any post-production job, and also for writing. Editing is a writing process, so it makes a lot of sense that Derek is also a brilliant writer. He is just a pro all the way around and I will be bringing him onto a new project I am doing now! Always a 5 star experience with him.
