Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

What is the difference between a housekeeper and a house cleaner?

Although some house cleaning and housekeeping duties might overlap, a house cleaner is charged with the top-to-bottom cleaning of a home. House cleaner duties typically include basic and deep house cleaning, such as washing and sanitizing countertops, floors, tubs, toilets, kitchens and more.

Housekeepers or maids are hired to lightly clean and maintain certain aspects of the home. This might include dusting, washing dishes, changing sheets, doing some meal preparation and restocking the client’s groceries and personal care products.

It’s also worth noting that a housekeeper or maid is usually one individual employed to a home (sometimes hired as a live-in), while a house cleaner is oftentimes accompanied by a team of cleaners.

What are the different types of house cleaning services I can get?

There are several services offered by professional house cleaning companies, each suited for a different purpose. These services include:

  • Standard cleaning, which is a basic cleaning typically done on a weekly or monthly basis;
  • Deep cleaning, which is a detailed cleaning with more intensive work than a standard clean;
  • Move-in and move-out cleaning, which is a detailed service preparing a home for residents moving in or out;
  • Green house cleaning, which is a service that uses eco-friendly cleaning supplies and products.

Aside from the type of cleaning services available, homeowners may also choose daily, weekly, monthly or one-time services.

How much should you tip maids or cleaning services?

Tipping between 15 and 20 percent is considered an appropriate tip for maids and house cleaners — just as it would with a barber, food delivery driver or taxi operator. During the holidays, you might want to consider tipping a bit more.

It’s important to note that some housekeeping and maid services might include a tip within the service fee, which should be explained to you in the service contract. Talk to house cleaners in your area to find out what's included in their fees.

I can't say enough about these professional house cleaners. They truly understand the meaning of a deep clean and went above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied with their work. I would definitely hire them again!

This was the worst house cleaner i've ever experienced. She did not empty any trash cans. She did not clean the bathroom floor. My attention was occupied with my 2 year old grandson. She only cleaned where we were and dimmed the lights in the other room. I was extremely disappointed.

Responsive and reasonably priced, but the service sucks. The first time we had the house cleaned the dining room floor was still dirty. They apologized and refunded some of the cost (thank you) and we thought we'd give them another chance. The second time they cleaned it was even worse. No floors had been cleaned and there was crap everywhere. Won't be returning.

My house was sparkling after 1986 worked her magic. She is very detailed oriented and wants to ensure she cleans to the clients expectations. I’ve never been this happy with a housekeeper and highly recommend her!! Thank you 1986 for your amazing work.

They completed the cleaning of my home and I have to say I was not very happy with the job. They did an amazing job with the bathrooms and bedrooms. However, the same cannot be said for the living room and kitchen. I am not sure what happened and unfortunately I did not notice it until they left, but they did not dust in the living room at all and the floors in the kitchen and living room did not appear clean. I actually had to dust and vacuum after they left. I was so surprised, because they started off so strong. I reached out to the company to see what could be done to compensate for this lack of job completion. However, their response was to have those cleaners come out again to clean the missing room or to give us a discount on our next cleaning. I certainly didn’t want those cleaners in my home again nor did I have time. I had family coming into town, which is why I hired someone to clean my house in the 1st place. I definitely will not be using City Maids in the future.

It was our first time hiring someone to clean our house and it could not have been easier. Charlene was very responsive and answered all my questions. Setting up the appointment was very easy. And Erica did a fantastic job on our bathroom and kitchen. Our stove in particular has never looked so good!! Very happy.
