John is one of the best dog trainers that I've met. I have a three year old recently adopted American Eskimo with issues such as leash pulling, nipping people who doesn't give him attention, and general insecurity issues. I have seen other dog trainers trying to get help, but without result. John took the time to get to know my dog and evaluate him based on what he saw and previous conversations with me. He helped me understand my dog and what I need to do to help him. Apparently, I have a dog that thinks he's an alpha and he taught me how to address this. I need more classes to address my dogs leash pulling and more, and I am glad that John didn't try to address all issues in one session because I don't think that would have been very helpful in the long run. Training a dog is not done in an hour, it takes more time than that. I highly recommend John.

I started looking at dog trainers a couple months ago but wasn’t able to get one until just recently, but Valerie was one I had talked to in the beginning and she followed up with me and when we were ready she was ready to get started. We did a private in home training with her this week which went well and she actually recommended doing a group obedience class since our dog doesn’t like people but loves dogs and learns well from them. Which actually saves us a lot of money so it was nice that she even recommended that and was looking for his best interest in learning, and not her best interest of making more money. We will be starting the group training next week and I’m excited to continue working with her and see if she’s able to help our baby in the long run.

Our trainer Denise has been such a great help with our crazy puppy. We hired her when the pup was 5 months old . We were in desperate need of training . Our pup was pottying in the house even though we had designated a spot for her to go. It was exhausting cleaning up after her all day. With Denise's help and expertise , our pup has learned were to go potty and we have learned as well the importance of consistency . It is evident that Denise is gifted as a dog trainer and our experience with her has been very professional . It is obvious she loves animals and there is a gentle way to train. Thanks Denise With love from Summer and the Courtney family:)

I bought a dog (german shepherd puppy) from Kris a couple years ago for sport work. He set me up with training and my dog is THE best trained dog I have ever owned. She has a balanced and stable temperament on top of fantastic obedience and protection. I am so incredibly happy with her and Kris is extremely knowledgeable in dog behavior and dog training of all aspects. I recommend Taylor made Working Dogs for any source of dog training or buying.

We love Maureen! She is patient and answers any questions I have during the week! She makes a personalized training schedule based on your families needs. I love that she shows my kids how to work with our puppy as well! We are learning how to raise a well behaved puppy with Maureen's help! We are already getting compliments on how well our puppy listens to us! The difference between our untrained dog and our new puppy is night and day.

We have had an a wonderful experience with Wendy Brookhyser and her team. Our dog was almost 4 years old when we brought him to the facility. We were having issues with aggression towards other dogs and an extremely hard time walking him with a leash. We had dog trainers come to our home and try and help us, but nothing seemed to work or stick for very long. Our good friend told us about Wendy and we decided to give her a try. This was our last attempt to try and help our sweet Aussie before adopting him to another family. Our Chuck did such a fantastic job with Wendy and her staff. When we picked him up, our whole family was pleased with how well he listened to us and walked with us. Our children use to not be able to walk him without a parent because he would dash after other dogs or people on bikes. Now even my 10 year old can walk him. I was reluctant to send my dog away. I had heard stories where the dog came back with a wounded or broken spirit. Chuck came back to us with the same fun loving spirit he had when we dropped him off. If I could do all over again, I wouldn't hesitate this time! The best part about this facility is that they not only train the dog, they train the family. We were instructed to watch a training video at least 8 times before we picked him up. We were told this DVD would help us prepare for our dog's arrival back into our home. The videos helped us learn the commands our dog would be learning at the facility. It has been a life saver! We still watch it once a week to brush up on our skills. They also provide Friday Train Day where they come to your home and pick up your dog for the day. We have taken advantage of this to help give our dog more consistency while we are still improving our skills with him. Chuck is so excited every Friday when he sees Wendy or a staff member. I would and do recommend Wendy to all of my friends that are struggling with obedience. They also provide boarding services. We are so happy with Wendy and her team and will continue to help us if and when we should need it.

Melissa has been great, our dog has come a long way since we began training. Our dog had a door bolting issue, since we have had 2 sessions with Melissa, I am able to tell her to sit at the door mat, then tell her to stay without a leash while I walk all the way down my front door entrance to the sidewalk while she waits patiently for me to come back. And we still have our final session tomorrow. In addition, she has given us many more tips. I would definitely recommend Bark to Basics. Christine Powell

We hired Dixie for our 4 year old shepherd for her anxiety issues. We had a very bad experience with another "dog trainer" so we were apprehensive about any dog trainers. Dixie was referred to us & we are so glad we called! She is wonderful! Patient, calm & a wealth of information! In 2 weeks with her help & advice we are seeing improvements with our dog! I highly recommend Dixie.

Audrey scheduled us right away for a consultation to help with our food aggressive dog. Within one week using her training and tips any family member can pull our dogs food away with out getting biten or even a growl. Our German Shepard will now wait patiently in a calm "sit" position till we put his food back for him. Looking forward to more training!

LOVE this company! I've never had a dog walker before, so I wasn't really sure what to expect. I was pleased to find out that Thor loves Megan, his new dog walker. Seeing as my work hours aren't getting any shorter, I'm happy I can trust Dogma to give me some peace of mind that Thor will be happy when I get home.

The crew at Off Leash k9 Training Palm Springs surpasses my expectations. I really didn’t know if there was any hope for me or my puppy, but the training my dog received, and the education I was given was second to none. I can literally take my dog anywhere now and she doesn’t even need a leash. It’s literally a different dog experience when you can let them roam off Leash with the confidence that they’ll come when called, and Off Leash of Palm Springs can deliver that life changing experience in just 14 days! Thank you so much to Morgan and her staff.

Bo went in pulling on the leash and crazy excited when he saw another dog. One hour later he walked out calmly and was completely unphased by other dogs he saw. I've got to keep it up, but Paul got me and Bo back on track!

Brian trained my dog Bella. I hired him for 3 training sessions and the amount he taught her in just three sessions was awesome. Probably more important than training her, he trained me how to work with her and re-enforce what he taught her. Bella really seemed to like Brian (possibly partly because he always has treats with him!) and she really positively responded to his instruction. He does seem to have an immediate connection to dogs. The training was very interactive and he made sure to address any problems I was having with Bella and offered very practical solutions. I would definitely recommend him if you are looking for someone to train your dog.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
