"I needed a therapist who could squeeze us in on the following day, a Saturday, when my boyfriend was in town. At first, when John informed me that he was completely booked on Saturday, I dejectedly said thank you and was going to hang up the phone. Then, I was very surprised and grateful that John was still willing to take the time to hear my concerns and provide feedback. He even offered to speak with my boyfriend so he could hear both sides of the story. My boyfriend, who was very reluctant to see a therapist, called me after his talk with John and was more willing to attend the session as well!
Because my bf agreed to only attending one session, I did not want to risk seeing an ineffective therapist, so I begged John to see us an hour before his normal business hours and offered to pay extra for the inconvenience. John agreed to meet us super early in the morning at no extra cost!
We arrived 15 minutes before our scheduled time and immediately began our session. John had my boyfriend and me facing each other and helped facilitate the dialogue between us. He provided pointers on what words to avoid, how to listen actively, show appreciation, and how to make each other feel understood and safe during conflict.
The session was emotional (in a good way!) and in the end, we were both overwhelmed with hope and positive energy! John was very engaged and passionate about helping us. He even gave us a book called Getting the Love You Want that he thought would be helpful for us. Such a small gesture, but I was incredibly touched at the thoughtfulness and genuine care John showed from beginning to end. I cannot thank him enough!
My boyfriend and I are excited for our next argument so we can practice what John taught us. We can't wait to see John again next month!"
